People browsing clothes at M&S

Went into the food hall at M&S today, to enter you have to walk through the main shop to get to the back where the food hall is.

On my way through I was surprised to see people browsing the clothing rails and many people had their hands full of clothes/socks/scarfs etc which I presume they thought they could buy. I didn't notice if anyone was on the till but staff didn't seem to be challenging them at all, I did notice more than a handful of people in the main shop so it wasn't just one or two people being cheeky. Anyone else noticed this?

I live in wales... during our lockdown they closed all of the clothes sections in supermarkets but kept only food isles open... at one point in asda they closed the isle that sold toasters, microwaves, all utensils, cooking and baking items which i thought was OTT personally and in tesco they stopped selling sanitary towels as a manager thought they were non essential (they realised this was a mistake and apologised) but yeah i felt that clothes are pretty essential considering babies need clothes, bibs etc as they grow so fast and what if you need new shoes because your one pair gets holes in? (Far-fetched but it happens!) Most people do but not everyone has access to purchasing online...

Utterly crazy. This is EXACTLY what will spread more of the virus and keep us in lockdown for longer. You can wait 4 weeks for clothes for crying out loud!

hobbyiscodefordogging · 20/11/2020 23:30

Aww remember the days before we had sanctimonious twats moaning about people not sticking to their own made-up extra rules

movingonup20 · 20/11/2020 23:36

The rules are where the clothing etc is on the same floor as the food they can be sold, it was clarified recently after all supermarkets can sell clothes.

Isabel Oliver, the director of the national infection service, Public Health England said in a statement available on the PHE website on 19 November that :

" Suggestions that supermarkets are causing Covid 19 to spread are inaccurate. Common exposure data does not prove where people are contracting Covid-19. It simply shows where people who have tested positive have been in the days leading up to their test."

So there is no evidence to say this is what will spread more of the virus.

Peoples failure to engage with the science on Covid is baffling.

I'm beginning to forget those days, they seem so long ago!

Blame the Government. They haven't once said people cannot shop for non-essentials in stores that are still open Smile
Legoandloldolls · 21/11/2020 01:54

I dont go to the shops right now ( do Tesco click and collect) but have been to Asda twice and picked up some toys and a dress while buying food. So it would be unfair if M&S couldn't with a similar set up.they also did this in the first lockdown towards the end.

In the first lockdown I had to source some clothes off a local clothing bank for my son as he had a growth spurt. So my new dress from Asda wasnt really essential but i didnt have a extra journey for it. I only go into Asda after 8pm when it's dead. But for people with kids who are growing, some clothing is essential. Not so much for just a month but who knows if we will see shops open on the 2nd? I cant get worked about it if it's all on the same floor and they are open for food sales anyway. I do think its unfair on the shops forced to close but what can you do?

I cant imagine people flocking to buy tonnes of unnecessary clothes right now.

Runningdownthathill · 21/11/2020 01:58

I really don’t understand what you mean. I was in M and S today. There were lots of people buying clothes, including me. Why on earth do you think people can’t buy the things they are selling?

And what area of expertise qualifies you to say what exactly is causing the spread 😂
SufferingFromLongLockdown · 21/11/2020 07:59

@Dannn

This is nothing like lockdown and the fact that there are 500+ deaths every day with no signs of this decreasing confirms it.
I don't think the govt call it a lockdown. It's a word we've got used to, so an easy shortcut to describe the situation but wouldn't have heard until this year. Its more restrictions but not a lockdown. Who really wants to be under house arrest?

That aside, these deaths will mostly be from people who caught it before this set of restrictions came in, taking into account incubation period etc. It takes time for changes to take effect..
They could even be from people rushing around in the last week to have one last blowout, catching up with people before restrictions became harsher, cases were coming down in many areas anyway so more restrictions and could have been counter productive if this is the effect they've caused.

Have you looked at details from kings college covid app? Signs are that cases are plateauing and coming down in many regions (and were even before these greater restrictions were brought in) , so we'll eventually see this reflected in deaths coming down. It takes time.
madhatternoteaparty · 21/11/2020 08:11

I can't believe people are still concerned about what other people buy from the shops 🙄 it's open, the products are available, let them get on with it. If someone is going to M&S for food and they pick up a t shirt on the way through so what? Clothes are essential anyway.

merlotormalbec · 21/11/2020 08:18

I brought slippers from Mns yesterday you're allowed to buy stuff

merlotormalbec · 21/11/2020 08:20

Just reading on and yes I paid for them at the food till. I did ask the man working
Before I queued and he looked quite perplexed and said of course you can so 🤷🏽‍♀️

Nosy bastards with not much going on in their lives.

Reminds me of all the threads during lockdown 1. The 2 cucumber one stands out. Outrage that someone dared to pop to tesco for just 2 cucumbers 🤣

funinthesun19 · 21/11/2020 08:25

I bought ds some socks from Asda yesterday. Shock

Naughty me! I should do my bit to save us all and just make him wear no socks.

Yes - picking up a jumper and a pair of leggings when going for your groceries will definitely cause mass spread of a virus and keep us locked up in our homes. Please just stick to the pies and ready meals going forward! There is no virus risk of only purchasing consumables!

userxx · 21/11/2020 08:29

@funinthesun19 So you're prepared to kill 10 old people so your son can have warm clean feet....... selfish cow.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 21/11/2020 08:29

I love these posts. "I was out buying something non essential and I can't believe the audacity of other people to be doing the same!!"

nosswith · 21/11/2020 08:36

The England rules seem more about who can open, which did not surprise me after one (presumably male) Tesco manager in a store in Wales considered sanitary protection to be non-essential.

Di11y · 21/11/2020 08:44

You know the government is calling it a period of national restrictions. I think calling it lockdown is disingenuous.

funinthesun19 · 21/11/2020 08:57

@funinthesun19 So you're prepared to kill 10 old people so your son can have warm clean feet....... selfish cow.

Looks like it! I mean I had trolley full of food but the virus only spreads if you buy clothes, so the socks were a huge risk.

funinthesun19 · 21/11/2020 08:58

And even if I went in just for some socks, ds needed them so....
