People browsing clothes at M&S

Went into the food hall at M&S today, to enter you have to walk through the main shop to get to the back where the food hall is.

On my way through I was surprised to see people browsing the clothing rails and many people had their hands full of clothes/socks/scarfs etc which I presume they thought they could buy. I didn't notice if anyone was on the till but staff didn't seem to be challenging them at all, I did notice more than a handful of people in the main shop so it wasn't just one or two people being cheeky. Anyone else noticed this?

I’m going to do the equivalent of drowning kittens tomorrow .. I’m going to visit a garden centre to peruse the Christmas decorations .. I do also need two new pots for some roses I need to replant though .

Fluffybutter · 20/11/2020 21:38

What is it with all the snippy weirdness on this site right now? Are people bored?
Again, are you serious?!
You literally just winged about people going out to buy non essentials and you went out to pick up non essentials!
Stop digging and just admit you’re no better than the people you’re bitching about .

Badgerbadger22 · 20/11/2020 21:39

😂 unbelievable

And yet so believable

Worried234 · 20/11/2020 21:40

@Benjispruce2

Why are m@s allowing it???
Allowing what?

No I didn't "winged" at all, I said I was surprised that people didn't know they couldn't go right inside a non essential shop, like they hadn't seen the news. The guy who couldn't go shopping in Smyths was genuinely shocked. I certainly don't think they should be indoors considering I was there

I don't think I'm better than anyone 😂😂😂 this thread is so funny, are you this melodramatic IRL? Or bad at comprehending words?

Bookworming · 20/11/2020 21:46

If they're allowed to buy them, then why not?

I'm sure if m&s wanted to they would've sectioned them off, wouldn't have been difficult.

You could call the COVID police and get them to check it out OP?

Just put an appeal out on MN for the COVID police number, most of them seem to frequent MN!

millymae · 20/11/2020 21:48

I live close to a huge M & S - they’ve shut off the upstairs but brought lots of the items usually sold up there downstairs, so you can buy most things.
Apart from the fact that I think it’s unfair to other businesses that M&S is allowed to do this because it sells essential food items I think it’s wrong that they have taken the decision to close the toilets. It seems to me that whilst they are happy enough to allow customers to browse the whole of the shop floor and spend money they are unwilling to put themselves out and keep the toilets open - it’s not even as though to get to them you have to go through areas that are closed off.
Some will no doubt argue that toilets are a major COVID risk and that’s why they’re closed but I can’t believe that they are any more of a COVID risk than the food shelves and clothing rails - toilets have remained open in all the major supermarkets but for some reason M&S have taken the view than non of their customers will ever be caught short.

Well during first Lockdown I bought tops and shorts in Sainsbos because I didn't have any that fitted ( due to feeding my face constantly)and it was 28 degrees outside.

OverThinkingUnderDoing · 20/11/2020 21:54

A couple of clothes and toy shops in my town have suddenly dedicated a few shelves to bread, veg and newspapers which have allowed them to stay open.

Fluffybutter · 20/11/2020 21:58

Melodramatic? No .
Pissed off at hypocrites? Yes definitely .
The only laughable thing here is you and your faux “shock”

SunshineCake · 20/11/2020 22:04

I was really surprised to see that Hobbycraft is open. While I'd love to go I don't see how it is essential and I won't be going until we are allowed to.

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/11/2020 22:05

I expect the ready made icing etc counts as food, and the craft stuff as essential for education/homeschooling/work

AndIquote · 20/11/2020 22:06

Yes, I noticed when I went into my 3 tier M&S to go to the food hall on the ground floor that the upper 2 stories were closed. However, they had brought a lot of the stock downstairs and had displayed non-food Christmas goods in the one way queues on the way to the tills. But you would wouldn't you if you were a store?
Whether the customer wants to buy insipid primary colour clothes with their meringues is another story.

SunshineCake · 20/11/2020 22:10

Why do you think you can't go to the food tills to pay?

switswooo · 20/11/2020 22:11

Well staff wouldn't let people into the clothes section if they weren't allowed ti buy them would they? Confused

The same reason The Range is open, to keep people occupied with crafts.

You're allowed to go now.

Oh do bore off, and maybe grow a thicker skin you sound exceptionally over sensitive
Fluffybutter · 20/11/2020 22:18

Ok love , whatever you reckon Grin

MillyA · 20/11/2020 22:21

Eh Confused

Why wouldn't they be allowed to buy clothes? Clothing has never been blocked off in supermarkets, unless you're in Wales.

I went to Sainsbury's today to buy my children warm clothes.

Christ. God forbid people need to keep warm during the cold weather.

midnightstar66 · 20/11/2020 22:23

Why can't you buy clothes if they are offered for sale? I bought clothes in supermarkets in the peak of the last lockdown too. Yes you can pay for clothing at food court tills!

TheMistressQuickly · 20/11/2020 22:23

Lucky for you. When we were in the October Lockdown in Wales we could not look at non food/items in marks and the super markets. It was shit. Argos was closed too. You e got it comparatively easy.

SunshineCake · 20/11/2020 22:24

@PurpleDaisies

Honestly, people on here can't wait to stick the knife in.

You can buy those in supermarkets.

Not so much now. I haven't been able to bu pay a kitchen knife in Asda for months. They stopped when there were a lot of stabbings.
Sweettea1 · 20/11/2020 22:25

Does child not have any clothes other than uniform 🤔

barbedwired · 20/11/2020 22:34

Yes I'm fucked off because I'm an independent clothing retailer with a shop opposite a supermarket selling clothes.

Dannn · 20/11/2020 22:40

This is nothing like lockdown and the fact that there are 500+ deaths every day with no signs of this decreasing confirms it.
