People browsing clothes at M&S

sunshinehappy20 · 20/11/2020 18:21

Went into the food hall at M&S today, to enter you have to walk through the main shop to get to the back where the food hall is.

On my way through I was surprised to see people browsing the clothing rails and many people had their hands full of clothes/socks/scarfs etc which I presume they thought they could buy. I didn't notice if anyone was on the till but staff didn't seem to be challenging them at all, I did notice more than a handful of people in the main shop so it wasn't just one or two people being cheeky. Anyone else noticed this?

I went into M & S today - bought christmas gifts, gloves, scarf, pair of boots, mens pyjamas, t-shirts - you are allowed to buy these items - I also bought quite a bit of food as well.

PurpleDaisies · 20/11/2020 20:44

Probably a bit off point but am I the only one worried how busy the shops are going to be after this lockdown

That was what happened in Wales.

BrettAndersonscheekbones · 20/11/2020 20:45

Yep, Canterbury M&S where you have to cut through clothes on the ground floor to get to the food, you can buy that stuff but other floors are out of bounds

Primark especially will be horrendous and people will want to get in there straight away when they reopen in case they are shut again a week later.

@FudgeBrownie2019

I can't find it in myself to give a fuck what other people are buying in the shops. Desperately been trying to find my inner rage over non-essential versus essential but I've been drinking since March so it's unlikely to happen.

Seriously, who has time for any of this petty bullshit? Just buy the stuff you want to buy and leave others to it.

@FudgeBrownie2019

^ THIS! You are my hero. Everyone else with curtain twitcher tendencies who give a shit about what other people are buying if they are LITERALLY allowed to buy it please do fuck off to fuck town.

SpillingTheTea · 20/11/2020 20:54

When I go to Asda I look at the clothes. You're allowed it isn't taped off. It wasn't as if the security guard threw me out of the store for looking at some clothes. 🤣

AnnaSW1 · 20/11/2020 20:57

You are allowed to buy those items, that's why!

You were in the last lockdown too.

@DontTouchTheMoustache if everyone bought online, the deliveries and food shopping slots would be taken by those who don't necessarily need them.

I haven't got an issue with physically going into a shop for whatever I need. If the garden centres can sell baubles and Xmas decorations, I can go buy new panties for my children.

DappledThings · 20/11/2020 21:00

but you can get in through the back and isnt that closer to the car parks?
I was going to say that. Although I consider that entrance the Primark side entrance rather than the back entrance!

Really , worst than normal this time of year ? I do most of mine online but I wouldn't mind going to do some shopping in the actual shops before Christmas.
Crunchymum · 20/11/2020 21:07

@megletthesecond

I've had to buy clothes from m&s for an non uniform day. Thanks school.
Do your kids have no clothes other than uniform? Shock
Crunchymum · 20/11/2020 21:09

To be fair the 2 M&s local to me have closed their clothing floors (they are open for collection, but ask to see the email before they let you up / down)

Both stores have reconfigured though so there are areas of clothing (socks, tights knickers, school uniform) on the food floor.

I am beginning to wonder if people have got the message that we are in a proper lockdown. Today I picked up presents from Argos, and more than one person went to walk in and were surprised o hear it's clock and collect only. But not as bizarre as the man who tried to move the barriers at Smyths to go shopping confused and then had a huge tantrum when the poor shop assistant broke the news that toy shops weren't essential and the reason that there were barriers and just a table at the entrance was because it's click and collect only.

Proper lockdown? And your going toy shopping and present shopping-
Those 2 statements don’t really match![/quote]
Hmm

You may not have noticed but it's Christmas soon. We are still in lockdown, I did what I'm legally allowed to do. Sorry I haven't done the typical MN over reaction and locked me and the DC in the house, crying every time the postman comes and disinfecting thin air.

What is it with all the snippy weirdness on this site right now? Are people bored?

Lurcherloves · 20/11/2020 21:16

Don’t see the problem? It’s so ridiculous people policing what others do. We live in a supposedly free society, the shop is open. If you feel anxious don’t go there. OP is the type who would’ve shopped Jews to the nazis

Feministicon · 20/11/2020 21:19

Don’t forget to spray your knockers for the postie @GlummyMcGlummerson 🤪

Benjispruce2 · 20/11/2020 21:19

Why are m@s allowing it???

Wow, that escalated quickly 😂

Hahahahaha.

And use kitchen tongs to retrieve the post, which must immediately be dropped into bleach.

Feministicon · 20/11/2020 21:28

I’d be pretty disgusted if you bought tongs unless it was pre covid tbh

KungFuWeetabix · 20/11/2020 21:29

@LilyWater

Supermarkets which already sell clothing stock are allowed to continue to sell clothes because they predominantly sell essential items alongside i.e. food.

Shops selling predominantly non-essential items are closed - New Look, Primark etc.

Our local Original Factory Shop is open, I can't work out what it seeks that is essential. A few food items and packets of paracetamol, but predominantly clothes, homeware and toys. I was surprised. So I went in and tried on shoes...
GlummyMcGlummerson · 20/11/2020 21:29

How the actual fuck are people reading "I was surprised to see people browsing clothes when we've been told clothes shops aren't essential" as "I want to police everyone, take away their liberties and I hope everyone who browsed dies in a fire". Are you lot this weird and obtuse IRL?

Because it doesn't sound for a second like OP was actually surprised. It sounds all kinds of faux naive and like what she really meant was to show just how superior she is with her oh-so-perfect rule following.
FudgeBrownie2019 · 20/11/2020 21:33

Hardly sticking the knife in. It’s more pointing out the irony of taking time from your day to post how shocking it is that other people are buying x, y and z whilst you were in the exact same shop!

It’s more amusement that this is what gets people riled up.

Aridane · 20/11/2020 21:34

@sophandbridge

You were in their shopping too OP, the M&S food hall isn't essential to go to when you can shop in a supermarket or get your food delivered.
Eh?
