AIBU to wonder when the riots begin?

Much more spending announced on 'defence' than eco policies, children growing up in poverty, dodgy contracts awarded to buddies and today pay freezes for public sector workers and a proven bully being supported in her role. All this on top of one of the worst covid death rates in the world. How much longer do we sit by idly?

PaperTowels · 20/11/2020 16:07

Yeah, if the power went down across the UK because of a cyber attack, suddenly people would be interested in Defence!

BBCONEANDTWO · 20/11/2020 16:09

@Friendsoftheearth

I think the Conservatives will get back in too. Labour is in total disarray and the deep rooted problems in the party need to be flushed out once and for all.

Secondly no chance of anyone rioting, why would they! It is not like it is going to make any difference, the only thing it will achieve is giving the protesters covid.

This is true - it's awful what's happened to the Labour Party - so bloody sad for the workers - I really wish they would get their act together. I'm not keen on Keir Starmers either too much of a public school boy - I would love someone like Andy Burnam.
Sobeyondthehills · 20/11/2020 16:11

If you want change then email your MP and ask for a meeting

I have a lovely relationship with my MPs secretary because he refuses to have a meeting with anyone with concerns.

I wonder what would happen if the teachers go on strike, whether that would lead to mass unrest, not riots, just a massive push for change. Added to that nurses and care workers join in, because while politicians are happy to clap them, they are not worthy of a payrise, then this country would be really fucked. Plus all the people who couldn't work (mainly women) because of childcare issues, leading to mass unemployement and a bigger equality gap

IrkedEssex · 20/11/2020 16:11

"OP is probably one of those who barricade herself in her home and demand “something be done’ if someone so much as tramples on her front garden."

@Lucidas - you'd be ok with someone trampling your front garden, then?

hopingforonlychild · 20/11/2020 16:12

@BBCONEANDTWO Keir Starmer never went to public school. When he was at reigate grammar, it was a state aided grammar. His parents were a nurse and a toolmaker.

emilyfrost · 20/11/2020 16:16
@emilyfrost Do you know the history of that word? If you did, I doubt you would be using it on mumsnet. Do you think being angry about over corruption, 50,000 deaths and children relying on foodbanks is overdramatic?

You are clearly very privileged. Good for you I guess. Meanwhile in reality....
I know what you’re referring to with the history of the word hysteria, yes. You’re still being hysterical; it’s an accurate description.

Corruption has always existed, coronavirus is unprecedented, and families being unable to feed their children isn’t down to the government. That’s often just a good excuse.

Crakeandoryx · 20/11/2020 16:17

I think it's become clear during the pandemic that the armed forces aren't big enough to support the country. What's the point of having an army that is too small to help it's own country.

If there are any riots it will come from keyworkers (back office government staff particularly) who have yet again had pay frozen. This set of workers have not had a payrise in 10+ years now as they are forgotten about yet have to work in short staffed, poorly equipped environments where stress levels are very high.

Friendsoftheearth · 20/11/2020 16:17

BBC It has become very clear in the last few days that Keir Starmer is probably not going to be able to bring both sides together. As much as he thought he could, now the unions have made their position crystal clear I think he has an almightly problem on his hands. Jewish Labour will not stand for Jeremy to be back in, Unions will not stand by and allow him to lose the whip. It was unopened can of worms that has been kicked down the road for years, and now someone has ripped off the lid. What follows should be very interesting.

My heart says that true Labour voters will want to rightly reclaim the party and roots, and ask the liberal wing of the party to join the liberal Dems or something, I wonder for much longer they are willing or prepared to put up with the Blair inspired greasy politics?

dkdkfhfkdsl · 20/11/2020 16:21

I'm with you OP. I can't bear the thought that people think it's not the fault of the government that we're in this mess.

The Track and Trace app is an absolute disgrace. All that money wasted when we could have used a perfectly good one that other countries were using. But no, we had to give the contracts to our pals and look what's happened.

I'm furious about the way this has been handled and would be happy to demonstrate (peacefully) against all of this.

ListeningQuietly · 20/11/2020 16:21

For those saying this Government do not shovel money and dodgy contracts to their mates ....

The National Audit Office says they do

greyhills · 20/11/2020 16:22

How much longer do we sit by idly?

In a thread entitled "AIBU to wonder when the riots begin?"

Do you know, for half a moment there OP, I half imagined that you were suggesting that 'we' should start rioting.

Then I thought: inciting civil unrest on MN? Surely not...

CorianderLord · 20/11/2020 16:23

I'm not really a person who riots OP. I'll object in legal ways because I'm not an arsehole.

Protest, democracy, urging MPs.

ancientgran · 20/11/2020 16:23

It isn't riot weather, if it happens it won't be till April or May. British people don't riot in cold wet weather.

MarshaBradyo · 20/11/2020 16:23

He does get this a lot. When his background is no where near as elite as Johnson, which didn’t inhibit him and he got a landslide. He’s state, and well educated. A shame it can work against him still.

I don’t know if he can win the next election though outside this consideration.

DGRossetti · 20/11/2020 16:24

I can't bear the thought that people think it's not the fault of the government that we're in this mess.

A government elected by the people in the face of clear advice they were nowhere near competent though. Not quite sure WTH people saw in Boris and the boys in November 2019 that made them say:

You know what ? They seem like the exact definition of responsible, caring and capable that the UK needs right now

kifomadertonasomc · 20/11/2020 16:25

I think the simpler question would be "when will people stop voting for a party that actively makes their lives worse" and the answer is a tough one. Tabloid media is very powerful in the UK.

calamityjam · 20/11/2020 16:30

I agree with whoever said that we voted these over privileged wankers in parliament time after time. If you voted Tory you should be really happy. They are living up to their reputation. Congratulations dick heads you get what you vote for

Suzeyshoes · 20/11/2020 16:32

Why would people riot when they voted for this? How many ppl have I heard say ‘he’s doing the best in a bad situation’?
I honestly think most people don’t give a damn about rising poverty, political corruption and an incompetent government. Our nation has become incredibly selfish and as long as they’re ok they don’t give a toss. And I don’t think ppl make the link between government policy and things like job loss, crime or starving children. They just repeat the right wing mantras of the media and hide under the duvet.

As long as they get the impression their leader is eloquent, hates Europe, will chuck out the immigrants, and will make them a quick buck. They’ll blame the Labour Party at the end of the day. Or remainers. Or the London elite. They’ll never blame the Etonians.

BMW6 · 20/11/2020 16:33

Rioting is violence - are you not ashamed to be promoting or wishing for violence OP?

If not, you really ought to be.

PaperTowels · 20/11/2020 16:33

The pandemic would have been handled so much better by Corbyn!

HumanFemale1 · 20/11/2020 16:33

@Friendsoftheearth

perfect you can stamp your feet if you want, but the rest of us will just pour a glass of wine this evening, and watch a good boxset.

Trying to encourage rioting is quite faintly ridiculous, why not try QAnon?

They might be up for it, the rest of us not so much.

It's easy to do that until you end up not having money for rent let alone wine

I ask again. What on earth did anyone who voted Tory expect, and based on what ?
DGRossetti · 20/11/2020 16:35

@BMW6

A lot of countries celebrate riots and revolutions that left thousands dead.

4th and 14th July spring to mind.

MercyBooth · 20/11/2020 16:38

YY @DGRossetti A reminder
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3764459-Boris-Johnson-refuses-to-look-at-photo-of-child-on-hospital-floor

Thread is full of excuses for that behaviour. And people still voted for them. They got the individualism they voted for. And now they cry foul and whine now the reckoning is to be paid.

PaperTowels · 20/11/2020 16:38

4th and 14th July spring to mind

And 1st Oct (China) and 12 June (Russia).
