To wonder why this Sainsbury's ad received more backlash than the other?

Both are Christmas ads with families celebrating Christmas. Only, when the first one was released, it received numerous complaints. Though, when the second one was released, it didn't receive any.

For the life of me, I can't tell what the differences are between the two. Why did people complain about the first one, but not the other? Many even went as far as boycotting the supermarket, though no one said the same about the ad with the second family.

Please help me work out why?

Ad 2:

TIA. I just can't seem to work it out!

@JudyShakes

But if they're not in Sainsbury's they'll be in another supermarket abusing BAME people. But you don't mind as long as it's not you
How does rejoicing that there's one place where you can avoid racists equate to not minding about their presence elsewhere? It's completely illogical.

I do wish schools would routinely teach critical thinking and basic logic.

Sainsbury's knew exactly what they were doing when they released that ad. It's depressing that it provoked the responses it did but Sainsbury's are just trying to manipulate us. Don't let them.
The whole point of adverts is to manipulate us. All of them, not just the Sainsbo ones or those with ethnic minorities in.

Those adverts are creepy. The recorded voices and VHS quality reminds me of those documentaries about 9/11 where they play the voicemails of people saying goodbye. I honestly thought the twist would be that the guy was dead.

I really don't think that's true. Companies are trying to be inclusive, that's a good thing. As an Asian person, I don't feel manipulated.

Candyfloss99 · 17/11/2020 17:06

They are both awful.

Sheogorath · 17/11/2020 17:07

@LisaLee333

I rest my case. Straight away, several posters are crying RACIST at the people who dare have a view that doesn't fit the far left narrative. A really predictable and lazy insult, spewed by the most narrow-minded of bigots.

Cheers for proving me right. Wine

The only person I see yelling and spewing insults here is you.

So do I. I was lucky to it learn it from my dad and by reading.

sandragreen · 17/11/2020 17:11

Well if all the supermarkets followed them in pissing off racists they'd all have to click and deliver from Amazon and we'd all be safe from interacting with them

That would be lovely Xmas Grin

greyhills · 17/11/2020 17:15

@asnugglysnerd

Because Britain is inherently racist.

I read some of the Twitter threads about the first one - it disgusts me that people think like that.

Britain has a lot more to do in terms of tackling racism.

Some people in Britain are racist. Please don't generalise about the nation as a whole.

This. There are some utter scumbags of all types on Twitter, including vile racists.

They do not represent the rest of us.

meow1989 · 17/11/2020 17:21

Oh blimey I'd seen the first advert but not the complaints. My white privilege is showing here but it didn't occur to me for one second that people would hold those vile views, let alone share them. Horrific.

TeachesOfPeaches · 17/11/2020 17:24

Just watched both and thought they were quite sweet. I think the phone call is a nod to how we have been living and communicating in lockdown.

The black family have English accents so are obviously representing a British family. Not sure what the big deal is but I do live in London.

If a black person wins a gold Olympic medal for Great Britain do people get upset about that? Do people feel sad that Lewis Hamilton isn't white?

D4rwin · 17/11/2020 17:25

They're a company. They want to make sales. They must be pleased that a few racist arseholes have improved the profile of their schlmazy, fairly low key ad.

AdventureCode · 17/11/2020 17:31

So although i know racists are out there as they let me know every now and then. I now know its not just that they hate black people or anyone BAME, but that they are literally sick to death of seeing, thats right, just seeing, my brown face and other people with brown faces like me.

What is wrong with people 😑

SuperbGorgonzola · 17/11/2020 17:31

This controversy had passed me by and I am saddened by it. Awful.

If you really think that (and you don't work for Sainsburys), then you are incredibly naive.

You must be being manipulated though, because what other possible reason would there be for having none white faces on telly? It's ridiculous to think people might care about equality of they work for a big corporation, or that the people involved might not be white. Nope. Utterly ridiculous. Every time there's more than 15% nom white people on telly it's just to piss off the racists and generate newspaper columns. Obviously.
FilthyforFirth · 17/11/2020 17:37

I had a little cry when I read all the horrific comments this morning. So fucking depressing that racism is so rampant in this country. It is a lovely advert, I'm off to watch the 2nd one now.

Iamagree · 17/11/2020 17:39

@DioneTheDiabolist

Racists gonna be racist at Christmas.🤷‍♀️ All they want is to celebrate the birth of a Palestinian radical and a generous ancient Turkish bloke without having to look at pesky minorities on telly.🤣🎅
Love this! (might steal it Grin)

What's worse is that apparently the people literally sick of seeing brown faces AREN'T racist, they're perfectly reasonable
chomalungma · 17/11/2020 17:42

Do you think there is still institutional racism in Britain?

That's what I think the comment was about.

Just as in the comment 'There is still sexism in the UK' does not mean that men should reply with 'Some men are sexist. But not all men.'

Ferrero12345 · 17/11/2020 17:42

The comments on Twitter are absolutely repulsive and it sickens me that there are people with these views. I see Hobbycraft have had a similar response to their advert that popped up on Facebook. Some people are scum unfortunately.

FippertyGibbett · 17/11/2020 17:45

I don’t like either of them !

I'm so sorry @AdventureCode Flowers It's not the same at all, but when my grandad moved to this country he struggled to even rent a room because of the 'no pets, no blacks, no irish' signs in all the windows. It's actually worse that everyone pretends that shit is in the past and we're all 'inclusive' now but then it rears it's insidious head daily anyway.
