To say wine is overrated?

I don't often drink alone, only usually socially but last night my daughter was at her dads and when I hear other people talking about having a few glasses of wine watching the tele, it always sounds quite nice.

So last night I put on the crown and had a few glasses myself, but I just found it a bit boring, a bit "now what"? and I feel like I was drinking it quicker because I was so bored.

I seemed to just end up with a headache and feeling a bit grumpy.

How do people manage to enjoy it?

AIBU to think it's overrated?

I need wine to be with food to find it enjoyable in that way. If I drank it in front of the TV I'd also be bored and probably end up polishing off the bottle for the buzz...

AngelasLastEgg · 16/11/2020 14:38

Well I need more detail about the wine. Red? White? What kind was it? Where was it from?

I love love love wine, it’s my favourite drink, but I’m not having at the moment because I’m ttc and low-carbing. I’m drinking vodka and slimline and find that very very boring, is nothing compared to a lovely wine.

PiperPiper20 · 16/11/2020 14:39

Was it decent wine? What was it?

AriesTheRam · 16/11/2020 14:40

You're not doing it right. You need.
1.good wine.
2.snacks
3.a bottle is a whole portion.

Iamnotminterested · 16/11/2020 14:40

Stick at it, it'll get easier Grin

Okbye · 16/11/2020 14:40

Totally agree! I've never understood the pull of 'having a couple of glasses' in the evening, some of the ladies I work with can go through a bottle or 2 (each!) on work nights which I just don't understand.

I find it just makes me bloated and headachey. Plus it's so full of calories and sugar, I'd rather just have an actual dessert! 😄

ferociouskin · 16/11/2020 14:42

It was barefoot, Pinot Grigio, nothing fancy here 😂

Are you saying wine or drinking at home in general?

Wine is ok, best with food, sometimes has an "emporer's new clothes' aspect when people are describing "the good stuff"

But I don't really recommend drinking at home, it is a bad habit.

GrapevineFires · 16/11/2020 14:44

I love a glass of wine. I don’t really eat sweet things, so that’s what I prefer as a ‘treat’.

However I do agree that it’s easy to drink too much when you are bored, so I try to only drink alone when I’m doing something else as an accompaniment- like a jigsaw puzzle, a book, eBaying, etc.

Disappointedkoala · 16/11/2020 14:45

YABVVVVVVU. Wine is the best drink.

AngelasLastEgg · 16/11/2020 14:46

Well I love a Pinot Grigio, that was our wedding white, (red was a truly lovely Porto) but I don’t like the Barefoot wines at all! Sainsbury’s does a lovely Pinot in the taste the difference range, it’s only £7ish.

But winter is for red wine!

caperplips · 16/11/2020 14:46

Oh I'd forfeit a sugary, overly sweet dessert any day of the week for a nice glass of wine!
Desserts don't interest me much at all and I really never drink tea or coffee and eat sweet treats in the evening watching tv or reading.

I love a glass or two of nice red, or very occasionally a very cold glass of Alberino etc, more so in the summer. Throw in a small bowl of olives and I am very happy.

I need to lose weight at the moment so have not had a drink in about 2 months and I miss it but am really looking forward to enjoying a couple of guilt free glasses with dh over Christmas.

Oreservoir · 16/11/2020 14:46

The French drink wine with meals.
Aperitifs are more the norm for drinks without food. So pastis, gin, whisky etc.
Buy some creme de cassis and try a kir. It's much nicer.
I have never been able to neck wine down on its own. I'm not averse to a glass of champagne though.

FippertyGibbett · 16/11/2020 14:48

Get yourself a nice cold bottle of Prosecco and some fancy crisps 😉🥂🍾

DarlingCoffee · 16/11/2020 14:50

Hmmm not a fan of PG maybe you can tell us what other styles of wine you like and we can recommend some? Agree with others though, a red is nice for the autumn/winter and try to leave it to warm gently before drinking. There are so many kinds of wine out there, don’t give up so soon, it’s a beautiful drink

irregularegular · 16/11/2020 14:53

Well I guess you either like it or you don't. I enjoy a glass of wine in the evening if I sit down to relax in front of the tv. Not every night. I usually have a herbal tea as drinking every night doesn't seem like a great plan. But I do enjoy wine, and usually only one glass, at least on a weeknight.

I would be very rare that I'd drink anything else to drink or that I'd have anything to eat. Never been an evening snacker - don't really see the appeal. Once I've had dinner I'm basically done.

Do you normally eat/drink something else? Or nothing at all.

InvisibleDragon · 16/11/2020 14:54

Wine - or any alcohol really - is deeply over-rated for me.

I enjoy feeling relaxed and sociable after a drink. But even if I only have half a glass of wine, I pay for it the next day (and the day after that!) by feeling depressed, tired and bloated and having my digestive system messed up. Swap in an equivalent amount of beer / spirits etc and the effect is the same.

Haven't totally quit drinking yet, but it has to be a pretty special occasion to make the lethargy of the next few days worthwhile!

Brieminewine · 16/11/2020 14:56

Stick at it it gets easier 😂 nothing better than a nice bottle of wine, snacks and the tv to yourself!

CorianderLord · 16/11/2020 14:57

Well Barefoot is grim for one

StrawberrySquash · 16/11/2020 14:59

It's so much nicer when drunk with other people! I am a social drinker, which is good in many ways but rubbish right now.

AbsentmindedWoman · 16/11/2020 15:00

Um. Sounds like you were drinking it for the sake of it, rather than because you really fancied a glass of wine?

That's not going to be enjoyable. I think that's where you went wrong!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/11/2020 15:01

@Iamnotminterested is correct.
It's a bit like when you first try smoking - it's generally not enjoyable but the mantra is practise - practise - practise.
Wink

Ridingthegravytrain · 16/11/2020 15:03

Wine is delicious. I’d drink daily...but sadly for me wine goes hand in hand with cheese and crisps and other salty unhealthy foods so I try not to indulge too much. It makes me ravenous. And sleep badly.

MsMiaWallace · 16/11/2020 15:04

You've not gone for a good wine.
Cheap, nasty.

Tigger03 · 16/11/2020 15:06

It just comes down to preferences I think! I love an evening glass of wine, and would definitely choose wine over a dessert.

It has to be wine though, can take or leave other forms of alcohol.
