To say wine is overrated?

I don't often drink alone, only usually socially but last night my daughter was at her dads and when I hear other people talking about having a few glasses of wine watching the tele, it always sounds quite nice.

So last night I put on the crown and had a few glasses myself, but I just found it a bit boring, a bit "now what"? and I feel like I was drinking it quicker because I was so bored.

I seemed to just end up with a headache and feeling a bit grumpy.

How do people manage to enjoy it?

AIBU to think it's overrated?

A few of my friends don't drink anything at all and I admire their resolve. They just don't like alcohol.
It Keeps them richer and healthier.

ferociouskin · 16/11/2020 18:11

Yeah I definitely was a big drinker in early twenties, out most nights, in at 7, get ready for work then do it all over again that night. I don't drink as much socially anymore as obviously...kids...but when I do drink I'm certainly not just having one or two 😂

Sometimes I fancy a drink but obviously current situations I can't go meet with friends so would be nice to be able to have a few myself but as I said, seemed to find it really boring.

Have got a red for tonight, it's Sainsbury's morador Malbec. Should mention I am a student so doing everything online and don't have my daughter again tonight.

@GoJoe2020 oh please...it's not that serious.

GoJoe2020 · 16/11/2020 18:29

It's not at all serious, but the point still stands. No, wine, all wine, is not overated because you ha 2 glasses of plonk and didn't like it much.

ferociouskin · 16/11/2020 18:30

@GoJoe2020 thanks for providing clarity.

I’m not a big fan of wine without food, and we don’t really drink it at home. We’ve got a fridge full of nice beers though! Now I’ve got used to beer I find the high alcohol content and the... astringency is maybe the best word... of wine a bit too much.

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/11/2020 18:58

YANBU I prefer a G & T. Occasionally I fancy a glass of wine but not the whole bottle so then I feel obliged to have a glass the next day and so on.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/11/2020 19:10

Oh, if we've moved on to recommendations one of my favorites, and you'll forgive me I forget the actual name - it's one of those arty-farty 'with-it' names they do these days, anyway it's a white, it comes in quite a big bottle, well plastic actually, and is a good price at Screwfix.
I remember the name now it's 'No Nonsense White ' something or other. Best served chilled if you've got the time. Wink

TheDuchessOfAquitaine · 16/11/2020 19:11

Adore wine with food/cheese/substantial snack but for me it’s a sociable drink and wouldn’t have a glass on my own. I have done in the past but always feel guilty for the wasted calories which are magnified by all the accompanying food Grin

NeedToKnow101 · 16/11/2020 19:13

Malbec, especially Argentinian, is very nice, so hope you'll enjoy that one more @ferociouskin. Maybe with your dinner or afterwards, instead of before?

I'm more of a social drinker. I like the odd glass of wine on my own but am really mindful not to drink every night. Easy habit to fall into ...

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 16/11/2020 19:15

I like a glass of red wine but it makes me tired and hungover. Currently drinking sparkling rose (Some kind of fizz stuff with a cork I don't even know what I am drinking tbh) It is lush. I don't usually drink but thouroughly enjoying this.

HeronLanyon · 16/11/2020 19:18

I can’t drink wine - just really really doesn’t agree with me. Champagne is fine as is beer and vodka !
Shame - once had a white burgundy which I would have got into in a big way if I could have stomached it.

Pepperwand · 16/11/2020 19:20

I like a glass of red wine but can't drink white, it gives me terrible indigestion! I only very rarely have more than one glass of red though as wine hangovers make me feel utterly dreadful. If I'm having a lot to drink I'll usually stick to spirits.

ferociouskin · 16/11/2020 21:25

Well I'd say tonight it went down a little better, managed 2 glasses, however, was still bored shitless and now in bed with a headache and just feeling very tired. I think it's a pass from me. Will need to find something else to unwind with, like a joint perhaps...haha only kidding, will try a book Grin

I like wine but it gives me acid reflux. I normally have a few rum and cokes at the weekend

Longdistance · 16/11/2020 21:37

Barefoot? I’m not surprised it was meh, it’s awful stuff. Get yourself a decent bottle of wine. Chablis, white Rioja, white Bordeaux. You can’t go wrong.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/11/2020 21:39

I'm the same with wine. Never drink it just makes me feel a bit tired and hungover. Dont get it at all.

lazylinguist · 16/11/2020 21:46

Well I'd say tonight it went down a little better, managed 2 glasses, however, was still bored shitless

I'm not sure it's meant to be a cure for boredom. Maybe you need a hobby? Grin

Anyone else finding it pretty funny that most people are probably trying to cut down on their lockdown drinking, while the OP is earnestly trying to cultivate a wine habit when she doesn't really like it? Grin

Storyoftonight · 16/11/2020 22:06

Im a massive wine fan but pinot grigio is stinking. OK with food for a glass in the summer but I could never sit and drink that.

Splodgetastic · 16/11/2020 22:16

Did someone say you can buy wine at Screwfix or was that a typo / joke?

ferociouskin · 16/11/2020 22:18

@lazylinguist hahaha yeah it is quite funny I suppose. I give up 🤣

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 16/11/2020 22:21

I do think op you should buy another drink you might prefer. Lots to choose from and some spirits are also ok in small doses with a mixer or ice and a slice! ( I might buy some plain gin and tonic tomorrow for Christmas!)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/11/2020 22:23

My favourite way to drink wine is in the kitchen while I cook for dh and I. An ice cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc, an episode of Friends or similar on the telly, and a risotto on the go. Stir/laugh/drink, repeat for 30mins. Snack on the parmesan I've grated for the risotto.

the80sweregreat · 16/11/2020 22:27

If i start cooking and drinking I end up putting music on and it can get a bit silly!
Then I just want the wine or gin and not the food .. then it might get burnt..
it's not a good combo for me really! Best eat first then have a drink with it.
(Mind you I can't handle the hangovers at my age so it's only a small glass these days. My drinking days are almost over)
:(
