To say wine is overrated?

ferociouskin · 16/11/2020 14:35

I don't often drink alone, only usually socially but last night my daughter was at her dads and when I hear other people talking about having a few glasses of wine watching the tele, it always sounds quite nice.

So last night I put on the crown and had a few glasses myself, but I just found it a bit boring, a bit "now what"? and I feel like I was drinking it quicker because I was so bored.

I seemed to just end up with a headache and feeling a bit grumpy.

How do people manage to enjoy it?

AIBU to think it's overrated?

OP posts:
IHaveBrilloHair · 16/11/2020 15:37

I don't like it at all, any of it, it all tastes disgusting to me.

LajesticVantrashell · 16/11/2020 15:37

I’d always recommend a nice Argentinian Malbec Wine

Rachetine · 16/11/2020 15:42

YABU OP! I’m pregnant and dreaming of a big glass of Malbec.

Maybe you’re more of a gin person?

firesong · 16/11/2020 15:48

I guess you just don't like it then!

I only got into drinking in the evenings at home regularly when I was in my 30s with young children. And it's a hard habit to drop! So probably best you don't keep trying with that one, keep your liver happy!

firesong · 16/11/2020 15:51

Red is nicer for drinking home alone though, if you're very keen to keep trying Grin a nice Merlot or Malbec

lazylinguist · 16/11/2020 15:58

How do people manage to enjoy it? AIBU to think it's overrated?

Confused It's obviously a question of taste, like with literally all food and drink. The fact that you don't like it doesn't mean it's overrated. That wouldn't make any sense. It just means that you don't like it! Other people don't need to 'manage' to enjoy it. They like it, so they enjoy it.

YANBU to not like wine.
YABU to think it being overrated is anything but an opinion based on your taste

LizaE · 16/11/2020 16:05

Barefoot pink moscato is nice. As is echo falls summer berries 🍾🍷

Wexone · 16/11/2020 16:09

i was similar postion couldnt understand the girls in work saying oh i can not wait to go home and have a glass of wine. could never find one i liked aswell. Then i was given a bottle of chablis as a present - god it was devine and didnt make me feel groogy the next day. I used the 1st lock down to try and a differnet wine every so often and slowely undrstood my tatstes, yes i do like the expsnsive ones though :( When we went out when restuaraunts were allowed open i had a lovely bootle of chablis but it cost 40e :( Lucky we had a voucher. Dont worry if its not for you - i am not a gin person and dont get it at all. And i have tried all different ones. But do try out different types and see if yuo find one you like. I do limit myself now to one or two glasses on a weekend night.

User415373 · 16/11/2020 16:10

Have you ever been much of a drinker? I'm the same age as you and have been enjoying wine since I was probably too young 😂 I did grow up in a pub though.
When I went to uni everyone thought I was mad enjoying a vino in my room haha. It's just part of who I am. I am pregnant now though so obviously not at the moment.
Try some different wines!

EmpressSuiko · 16/11/2020 16:12

I always think it sounds so grown up and appealing to have a glass of wine at home but I just don’t like wine, I can tolerate rose but the only wine I enjoy is Asti as it’s really sweet, anything else tastes too dry!
I’ve found I don’t even enjoy drinking anything alcoholic at home, it seems pointless and boring so I’ll just stick to tea Grin

MrsToothyBitch · 16/11/2020 16:14

YABVU. Good wine is like nectar.
Beer in incredibly overrated. Revolting stuff.

the80sweregreat · 16/11/2020 16:16

Some wines are not very nice but I do like South African reds and a white wine called Cederberg. (Only Waitrose seem to stock it though the other supermarkets don't sell it)
A cheaper wine just gives me a headache these days so I don't drink as much as I once did and not in the week , but at weekends it's nice with dinner.
You may prefer a sweeter drink ? Cider isn't too bad , although I can't drink much of it myself as it is too sweet for me.
I used to like plain Gin and tonic , but not the fancy ones they do now.

Crankley · 16/11/2020 16:17

I don't drink plonk but love a glass of three of something like Chateauneuf du Pape. I also don't drink prosecco, I prefer either champagne or there are some really brilliant English sparkling wines available now that have done really well in blind tastings with champagne.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 16/11/2020 16:23

Yabu. I have nothing further to add Grin

InvisibleDragon · 16/11/2020 16:43

I feel I have nothing special to kind of mark my time as my time of that makes sense.

It sounds like the important thing is that you get to spend some time looking after your own needs and doing something that allows you to be you, rather than just a parent/partner/employee.

Is there something other than drinking that you could do that lets you mark your time as your own and help you to feel happy at the same time? Doing yoga or another workout? Working on a hobby? Reading a good book? Doing your nails?

(Some of those suggestions are a bit twee, but I hope you know what I mean!)

YABVU. Good wine is like nectar. Beer in incredibly overrated. Revolting stuff.
There are some nice fruity beers. Brewdog Cosmic Rasberry is lovely.
MingeofDeath · 16/11/2020 16:59

Cant stand the stuff and believe me, I have tried many, many times over the years. I must just be an unsophisticated oik.

AriesTheRam · 16/11/2020 16:59

@ferociousskin if there's a lidl near you they do a cabernet sauvingon that is lovely and not expensive.its got a pic of a lion on the front

the80sweregreat · 16/11/2020 17:17

I know a few people who don't drink wine or fizz but I do get it as some can be very rough indeed.
I've learnt what to avoid over the years and what is worth a go.
Your palette and taste buds do change over the years too.

liveitwell · 16/11/2020 17:21

YANBU. I've never seen the appeal.

I can relax without it. And I find plenty of other drinks much nicer.

Tbh I think a lot of people either use it as a crutch, or say they drink it just to sound "cool".

It's a bad habit and bad for your health so if you didn't like it, just don't do it.

liveitwell · 16/11/2020 17:22

I cringe at reading a lot of the comments on here. Such snobbery.

Macncheeseballs · 16/11/2020 17:25

I feel the same way about the crown, boring and over rated

GoJoe2020 · 16/11/2020 17:35

You've got to the love the arrogance of this thought process...."I tried a popular thing and didn't love it, therefore I've decided everyone else who likes it is WRONG and it's overated!"

Like, wow.

JessePinkmanYo · 16/11/2020 17:43

My fave red of the moment is Cono Sur Bicicleta Pinot Noir. Chilean. Find it in Tesco and Sainsburys £7 ish

Treacletoots · 16/11/2020 17:43

I love wine, and I'll drink most types but I have found my tastes have improved over the years and I've got a bit more picky. I've noticed that anything under £7 is a bit hit and miss, 7-10 a nice blend of not too expensive and won't give you an aftertaste. Over #10 best saved for when you're feeling flush but generally speaking the more you can afford the better the taste and less the hangover.

I love a good NZ Sauvignon Blanc, you can't go wrong with most French but I particularly love a nice cold pouilly fuisse or a good (£8+) pinot grigio, and a decent quality dry rose is fabulous with some hummous and crisps.

Although it has to be said that if we did run out of any of the above, I'd pretty much drink anything GrinWine
