To say wine is overrated?

I don't often drink alone, only usually socially but last night my daughter was at her dads and when I hear other people talking about having a few glasses of wine watching the tele, it always sounds quite nice.

So last night I put on the crown and had a few glasses myself, but I just found it a bit boring, a bit "now what"? and I feel like I was drinking it quicker because I was so bored.

I seemed to just end up with a headache and feeling a bit grumpy.

How do people manage to enjoy it?

AIBU to think it's overrated?

I love the idea of wine but I can't find one I like enough to enjoy it and I don't want to keep trying to find one. DH doesn't like it so it seems a waste to keep resigning it to cooking stuff. I'm switching to neat whiskeys or rum instead. Just a glass is enough.

wewillmeetagain · 16/11/2020 15:07

White wine is utterly vile and red is ok only with food in my opinion. I never understood people who just sit and enjoy a glass of wine, horrible, headache inducing devils piss lol

bilbodog · 16/11/2020 15:07

It takes practice OP 🤣🤣🤣 🥂

MrsAvocet · 16/11/2020 15:08

YANBU.
Alcoholic drinks in general are shit, and wine particularly so.
There is possibly a small case to be made for the existence of red wine as a useful ingredient in a few beef recipes, but otherwise it has no value.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 16/11/2020 15:08

All alcohol is vile.

To quote Sheldon Cooper “grape juice that burns”

I simply cannot understand how anyone likes the taste of alcohol and I especially don’t understand anyone who works hard to get used to it! Confused

Splodgetastic · 16/11/2020 15:11

You just haven’t had an expensive enough wine yet, I think, but honestly I don’t think it’s a habit worth developing!

Kseniya · 16/11/2020 15:11

it's kind of like a hobbit to say, someone likes it and he gets pleasure, and the other vice versa. this is normal)

veryordinary · 16/11/2020 15:12

YANBU, it gives me massive headaches

i'm also not a fan of the French defining all worthy meals with wine.

eandz13 · 16/11/2020 15:17

I agree! I can't just sit and have a glass of wine and relax. I end up headachy and grumpy too. It doesn't relax me in any sense of the word. The only alcoholic drink I've found that I can just have one of in front of the telly is Baileys.

HoxtonBonnet · 16/11/2020 15:20

I love a couple of glasses of red wine; I drink it slowly and find it very relaxing. I have to be careful with quantities though, as any more than that and I feel horrendous the next day.

Maybe you just don't like wine? What about a nice g&t instead - there are some lovely flavours out there.

"All alcohol is vile."

Blimey! Don't hold back!

I tend not to drink on my own as its rarely worth it and agree that wine is a sociable drink. It does also help if you spend a bit of money on it.

Cheap red wine is undrinkable.

Nottherealslimshady · 16/11/2020 15:21

Wine is gross. I only drink strawberry and lime kopparberg, amaretto and kraken though.
Wine tastes and smells like gone off grapes.

Whitecart · 16/11/2020 15:22

I don’t like wine or any alcohol. I’d rather have a coke or a cup of tea.

Trousersareoverrated · 16/11/2020 15:23

If you don’t like it you don’t like it! I love a glass of wine- although I really can’t stand the cheap stuff like barefoot. You don’t need to go expensive to find something nice- Tesco often have lovely wine on offer for £6ish.

To me, I love sitting down after the chaos of the children has died down and having a nice glass of wine in front of the TV. Gives me a nice fuzzy head (only need one glass!) and then I go to bed all relaxed.

snowstorm2012 · 16/11/2020 15:28

I love wine, usually NZ Sauvignon but have expanded as I've completed Levels 1 and 2 of the WSET course in Wines since August (including a lot of tasting it's been fab) so I also like certain Rieslings now and Shiraz.

Love wine Grin

SantaIsReal · 16/11/2020 15:28

I feel I am one of the very few who do not like wine! I wish I did though as a few glasses with a meal always sounds appealing but I just can't go for it!
I have tried a variety from cheap to expensive and still cant get on board.
I'll stick to the vodkaGrin

LajesticVantrashell · 16/11/2020 15:29

Oooooh a nice Sav Blanc on a Friday night, goes straight to my leg muscles. The best feeling in the world.

unmarkedbythat · 16/11/2020 15:29

I didn't like any wine other than rose until I was nearly 30, then had some really nice dry white at a wedding and have loved it ever since. Red wine, though, can still do one. Don't like that at all.

HesterShaw1 · 16/11/2020 15:30

YABU. Wine is lush. But you need to pick carefully. After lots of trial, error and careful deliberation, I now know that there's nothing on earth more delicious than a NZ Sauvignon Blanc.

However I don't go over 2 glasses, because the aftermath is far from enjoyable.

User415373 · 16/11/2020 15:30

If you don't like it that's fine. We're all different!
Sitting in front of the TV with a glass after a stressful day is bliss. A couple of my friends find it odd and joke about how much I drink (a glass a few nights a week so nothing crazy!). Then I remind them that I can't remember the last time I sat at home with crisps/chocolate or any other snack which they think is crazy. It's my thing, that's their thing, it's all good.
No point in forcing it if you don't like it though!

ferociouskin · 16/11/2020 15:32

See I think that's my issue, it sounds really appealing, it sounds very grown up (I'm 28 and still not convinced I'm grown yet) and I wish I could just sit and have a few and relax and enjoy when I don't have my daughter as I feel I have nothing special to kind of mark my time as my time of that makes sense.

I do like red and haven't had in a long while, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced red? Might give that a try tonight 🤣

ferociouskin · 16/11/2020 15:33

For the PP that asked, no I don't tend to snack after dinner and if I am having wine I would prefer it before dinner as it does make me hungry.

CounsellorTroi · 16/11/2020 15:34

I can't stand Pino Grigio, I find it cloying. I'd rather a Pouilly Fume, a Chablis or at least a decent white Rioja or sauvignon blanc. And of course champagne.

CounsellorTroi · 16/11/2020 15:35

And I love red too just in case I gave the impression of being solely a white wine drinker.

Thismummyruns · 16/11/2020 15:36

I've never had a glass of wine that doesn't taste like hairspray. I don't think I have the correct palate for the stuff.
