To say wine is overrated?

I don't often drink alone, only usually socially but last night my daughter was at her dads and when I hear other people talking about having a few glasses of wine watching the tele, it always sounds quite nice.

So last night I put on the crown and had a few glasses myself, but I just found it a bit boring, a bit "now what"? and I feel like I was drinking it quicker because I was so bored.

I seemed to just end up with a headache and feeling a bit grumpy.

How do people manage to enjoy it?

AIBU to think it's overrated?

I love wine very much but I don't always like to sit at home alone when the kids are in bed and have a glass. Sometimes I'll want some and I'll have some.
It could be that wine isn't for you. What about bringing back cocktail hour?

lazylinguist · 16/11/2020 22:33

@lazylinguist hahaha yeah it is quite funny I suppose. I give up.

Grin Me too - I've given up wine (and booze in general) even though I do like it. It just doesn't agree with me any more!

OwlOne · 16/11/2020 22:38

You're wrong! I agree you need the right snacks. Good crisps and olives with white wine. Chorizo and cheese with red wine.

OMG what have you done to me, it's twenty to eleven and I want chorizo, cheese and wine.

Hangingover · 16/11/2020 22:44

Oh I do miss wine Sad any other dependent drinkers watching this thread wistfully

Couchbettato · 16/11/2020 22:45

I don't feel the buzz unless I've got someone to talk to.

It's a waste in a non-social setting.

But also it depends on the speed of which I drink it, and how much. A bottle is a portion.

movingonup20 · 16/11/2020 22:49

I sometimes have a glass with dinner and that's fine, sometimes we go through more than a bottle. Rarely get a hangover unless the wine was a stepping stone to the spirits cupboard. Rarely drink on school nights (not that we have kids, they are grown, and we wfh)

Beer is better.

AgeLikeWine · 16/11/2020 22:55

I can’t get excited about Pinot Grigio either, OP. It’s wine for people who don’t like wine.

The decent stuff is produced and intended to be enjoyed with food. A glass of full-bodied red with a piece of mature cheddar is delicious, or try a chilled dry Sherry with a few olives or some ham.

Glitteryone · 16/11/2020 23:26

I find it a waste in a non social setting too!

My ideal evening would be a group of friends out for dinner, preferably tapas/snacky type sharing plates and lovely New Zealand Sauvignon blanc or prosecco to go along with it.

At home, on my own I’d rather have tea and biscuits!

@KizzyWayfarer

I’m not a big fan of wine without food, and we don’t really drink it at home. We’ve got a fridge full of nice beers though! Now I’ve got used to beer I find the high alcohol content and the... astringency is maybe the best word... of wine a bit too much.
Yes - it seems pretty rare to find a quality red under 13% these days and 14% is increasingly common.
Splodgetastic · 17/11/2020 18:56

If you don’t like the vino do half and half with lemonade or tonic and some ice.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 18/11/2020 13:39

I've found post kids my tolerance for most alchol has diminished - so many just make me tired and cranky.

I did used to like wine with Sunday lunch growing up with my parents - (we were teens before alloed to have a glass) - even that now I'm not so keen on.

What about bringing back cocktail hour?

Have found some nice pre-mixed cocktails over the years - which sometimes I tolerate better though it's still rare for me to drink.

I think it's less over rated and more not for everyone.
