Positive Covid test but we have no food in!

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 00:15

I got a text at 10pm tonight to say the DS is positive for CV. He hasn’t really had symptoms but THREE members at his SN college tested positive earlier this week so he was sent home to isolate and I wanted to make sure as DH is a keyworker. I really didn’t think it would be positive.

I’m bloody furious that staff have passed it onto vulnerable students. DS is classed as CEV so has been taught to be very good with hygiene but the staff haven’t been wearing masks, and didn’t seem to adhering to 2m social distancing at his induction session, but that’s another thread.

This means the whole household needs to isolate from now obviously but we are a family of 6 (adults) and get through a LOT of food so I shop every 2/3 days. The next big shop was due to be tomorrow!

The earliest online delivery I can get is for Wednesday and we literally only have milk, eggs, chips, meat and rice/pasta but not enough for 4 days. No squash/bread/cereal/yoghurts/fruit/veg etc.

There is literally no one local we can ask. DH’s brother lives an hour away but his family also has Covid (not from us as we haven’t seen them for months).

It’ll be a lot of shopping for a volunteer to get, if I can find one.

I’ve booked the other 5 of us for a drive in tests tomorrow so I was thinking about me and DH double masking and scooting round Tesco chucking stuff in trolleys as quickly as possible straight afterwards.

Should we? If we have it tomorrow, we had it today too!

staff member May have been tested for basically the same reasons you tested your kid...been in contact, no symptoms but is a key worker so wanted to be sure.

Good point. The spite that OP is aiming at the people who are putting themselves at risk every day for her DS and his peers, is really depressing. And it will put teachers and carers off being tested if the finger of blame is going to be put on them.

StanfordPines · 15/11/2020 13:26

Have you tried your local church/mosque/temple? Many of them will help. Also post on your local Facebook selling pages or Nextdoor.

And in the future, assuming finance allows, keep a stock of food. There could be a hundred different reasons why you can’t go to the shop. Keeping a week or so of food in stock isn’t going to take up that much space or effort.

Aridane · 15/11/2020 13:26

@Inkpaperstars

i can't quite see the point in the tests either, even if negative you will still have to isolate.
Probably to self justify gadding off to Tesco when in mandatory self isolation
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 15/11/2020 13:26

Please don't blame teachers for your situation.

Get onto your local facebook group and ask for immediate help.

theThreeofWeevils · 15/11/2020 13:33

The scenario described in the OP's first post is quite amusing.
Had she not decided to get her asymptomatic son (not eligible for a test) who had already been warned to isolate, tested, there would have been no reason for the other household members not to go out shop. Only the son was required to isolate under the rules as they stand.
Maybe that highlights flaws in the test & trace set-up, since the risk of Tesco transmission would have been the same regardless of a test having been undertaken; it also is a satisfying instance of thinking one is a special case coming back to bite one on the bum.

rumblefish23 · 15/11/2020 13:35

Sainsburys have an app called Chop Chop, limited amount of items as it's delivered by scooter, shopping delivered in an hour.

It was a life saver when me and my partner had covid and 6 of us in the house. I caught covid at work from a child whose family still sent their child to school even though older sibling had tested positive.

81Byerley · 15/11/2020 13:35

Definitely do NOT do this! There will be volunteers on FB.

NekoShiro · 15/11/2020 13:37

Raging at the teachers for passing covid to your son, but not raging at yourself for maybe passing it to everyone in tesco?

We all know we are in the midst of a pandemic and I don't understand why people still arnt getting 2 weeks for food as back up right now.

We all know we might need to isolate and have done since march, you could of been slowly building up a two week supply of basics for roughly 7 months.

Everyone needs to have a back up plan so they don't end up in this situation.

Florelei · 15/11/2020 13:38

I think there are probably more people than we realise parading around the shops despite the fact that they should be isolating.

The irony though of the OP being raging that someone has given the virus to her DC but then thinking it’s ok to go to the shops. Shock

Jux · 15/11/2020 13:44

You have Prime so Amazon will deliver food tomorrow if you order it today. It'll probably be fairly basic stuff as Prime can only do next day if it's things they stock, rather than, say Freeze Dried Raspberries which is fulfilled by someone else. However, the basics will keep you going for a day or so. Just eat plain for now and you'll all be OK without fresh fruit/veg until Wednesday, it really won't kill you!

tink09 · 15/11/2020 13:46

You’re angry with the staff for infecting your DS, yet you’re happy to risk others by going into a supermarket. I literally have no words to cover your stupidity and hypocrisy.
Stay in the house for 14 days and none of you leave! Only get a test if you’re symptomatic!!!!
Our tests came back in 14 hours so again don’t jump to conclusions about staff.

ktp100 · 15/11/2020 13:46

I'm sure someone has mentioned this already but if you have Prime you can get a next day Morrison's delivery.

If you're all adults surely one of you has a mate who can pop to a corner shop for bread and milk at least?!

Anjo2011 · 15/11/2020 13:48

No. It’s a bad idea. A really bad idea.

fatblackcatspaw · 15/11/2020 13:50

Can you get Iceland deliveries ? they usually have slots and you can get the basics

maverickallthetime · 15/11/2020 13:52

This is a good illustration of why the test OP has booked is pointless!

Positive Covid test but we have no food in!
JustDanceAddict · 15/11/2020 13:52

It’s disgusting you’re angry w staff passing it on unknowingly yet you want to go round Tesco when you should be SI!!! 🤦‍♀️
I’m sure you could get a basic delivery to last a few days - co-op, Iceland, Uber, friends to drop off food etc. Do not go out - you don’t need tests unless you’re symptomatic - that’s why there aren’t enough tests!!

RubbishQueen · 15/11/2020 13:53

As above contact Morrison's if your within their limit.

But just to get something straight.. you are fuming that a memebr of staff gave your son covid but are happy to go to a supermarket and potentionally infect the staff there and other shoppers? 🤔

Griselda1 · 15/11/2020 13:53

I think this is where the smaller shops come into their own. Phone a few with your shopping list and you may be surprised how cooperative they are.
I can appreciate why you're angry but you need to cope with this as best you can.

Aragog · 15/11/2020 13:53

I'm sorry to here your DC has tested positive. I hope they and the family stay well.

YABU to blame the staff. They will be following the guidelines of school/college generally. We don't wear masks in class and there is no requirement to SD within the classrooms here either. Unfortunately Covid could have passed on in many ways to your child, including from other asymptotic children. Unfortunately in schools and colleges Covid now feels inevitable for staff and children, no matter what we try and do under the Government's suggestions.

YABU to go and do a large supermarket shop when you could all be isolating, let alone two of you doing it. Imagine if you have it and pass it on to someone else without realising? You are cross with staff who may have passed it on but there is a risk you could do the same.

Have you looked at Morrisons via Amazon? I tried it for the first time last week. It took a day or two for my approval to come through, but then when it did I could do a same day delivery.

Try phoning the council helplines or take T&T on their offers - they normally offer volunteer delivery and supports when they call, ordinarily within a day of the positive test coming through.

Do you have a local milkman delivery? They can often be set up very quickly and these days many delivery more than just milk, such as juice, butter, eggs, bread, etc.

Aragog · 15/11/2020 13:54

And yes, unless you have symptoms then testing the family is a bit pointless, unless T&T have called and suggested it.

Regardless of the result you still have to isolate the same length of time anyway.

Aragog · 15/11/2020 13:57

@ViralVera

No click and collects available either.

Bit of a coincidence that 3 staff members test positive then DS gets it isn’t it Cookie? None of the rest of us have had symptoms. They are in his ‘bubble’. One of them for definite was in college on Monday, then got a positive test on Tuesday. I am fucking raging.

I was in school on a Monday. I was tested on the Tuesday (had the hospital followed full procedures I should have been tested Monday) The result came through Wednesday.

I had had 'none big 3' symptoms since Thursday but covid wasn't suspected at that time.

Not all tests mean you have to isolate before, unless you have symptoms - for example a test without symptoms, a research test, regularly workplace testing, etc.

ArcheryAnnie · 15/11/2020 14:00

Deliveroo can get you a groceries delivery in about half an hour.

And if you set up a weekly veg box delivery from somewhere like Riverford, you are guaranteed fresh veg delivered to your door once a week during lockdown (and after) regardless of how you are or the state of the shops. Set it up once and you don't have to do anything else. (Also means you don't have to deal with a mountain pf packaging afterwards, too.)

Crunchymum · 15/11/2020 14:02

Are you some kind of masochist @ViralVera? Shock

28 pages of people telling you how selfish you are..... unless you've just joined, you must know how MN feel about "rules" and breaking them.

I never understand why people post things like this? You are clearly going to go to Tesco's anyway.

FWIW I do agree that it is mess of your own doing. Testing when you didn't technically need to test, not being prepared for potential period of SI when you did test (I get that you assumed it would be negative but hey ho) and now making every excuse possible as to why absolutely no one can help you.

I am pretty sure you aren't the only person doing this OP, but posting about it is just pointless.

SnowyBerries · 15/11/2020 14:02

Ridiculous to be "fucking raging" at the teachers

mnahmnah · 15/11/2020 14:05

I would also recommend Deliveroo. Ours local co-op can deliver through them as quickly as ten minutes
