Positive Covid test but we have no food in!

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 00:15

I got a text at 10pm tonight to say the DS is positive for CV. He hasn’t really had symptoms but THREE members at his SN college tested positive earlier this week so he was sent home to isolate and I wanted to make sure as DH is a keyworker. I really didn’t think it would be positive.

I’m bloody furious that staff have passed it onto vulnerable students. DS is classed as CEV so has been taught to be very good with hygiene but the staff haven’t been wearing masks, and didn’t seem to adhering to 2m social distancing at his induction session, but that’s another thread.

This means the whole household needs to isolate from now obviously but we are a family of 6 (adults) and get through a LOT of food so I shop every 2/3 days. The next big shop was due to be tomorrow!

The earliest online delivery I can get is for Wednesday and we literally only have milk, eggs, chips, meat and rice/pasta but not enough for 4 days. No squash/bread/cereal/yoghurts/fruit/veg etc.

There is literally no one local we can ask. DH’s brother lives an hour away but his family also has Covid (not from us as we haven’t seen them for months).

It’ll be a lot of shopping for a volunteer to get, if I can find one.

I’ve booked the other 5 of us for a drive in tests tomorrow so I was thinking about me and DH double masking and scooting round Tesco chucking stuff in trolleys as quickly as possible straight afterwards.

Should we? If we have it tomorrow, we had it today too!

@ViralVera

DS’s test was not unnecessary either hmm. Even if he doesn’t, hopefully become unwell, there are still long term effects from Covid so I wanted to check if he had picked it up and have it on record.

If he had no symptoms, which you say he didn't when the test was taken, then your test was unnecessary. The NHS are clear on this and you will have ticked on the booking form to say he had symptoms ie you lied.

The reason I’m raging at the college is why at least one of the staff members was in college the DAY BEFORE (Monday) we were notified there were positive tests (Tuesday)

The staff member may have been part of the community research testing. The ONS are testing some people regularly for a variety of reasons. These people do not need to isolate before or after testing unless they have symptoms or a positive test. The worker may have been completely asymptomatic and been as surprised by the result as you.

A friend works in a care home and tested positive last week (they get tested weekly) with no symptoms at all.

Fouroclockonamarblemorning · 15/11/2020 08:00

You don’t need to all get a test, you need to isolate not go shopping. Wtf if we all did this, we’re never going to be out of lockdown.

AntiHop · 15/11/2020 08:01

Please don't go to Tesco. That would be incredibly irresponsible.

Sainsbury's have an app called chop chop for same day deliveries. Coop also do same day deliveries. In my area, you can get morrisons and local independent shops on deliveroo. If they don't show, check back later, as they don't always show up, and will only show up when open

Also, if you do get the rest of the family tasted (which you shouldn't unless they have symptoms), a negative test when you don't have symptoms can be a false negative.

Aridane · 15/11/2020 08:01

The chances of us infecting anyone in Tesco in minuscule with masks on, no cough or sneezing, just by walking past themhmm. Unlike getting up close while working with vulnerable students with no masks on

FFS 😡

LondonlovesLola · 15/11/2020 08:02

I need to step away from this thread OP.
Your attitude towards your child’s support workers/teachers is horrible.
Oh, and no, you can’t go to Tesco.

Redcherries · 15/11/2020 08:03

Seriously, you’re raging that someone passed it to your son on Monday and found out on Tuesday they have it but you’re willing to potentially pass it on on Sunday knowing from Saturday that someone in your house tested positive on because you’ve potentially already infected people?

If you’re a cev family you should be well aware of the help and support that affords you. Use that and don’t put others at risk.

DodgeRainClouds · 15/11/2020 08:03

Your attitude is the exact reason it spread! Yet you are cross with frontline workers who have risked their health doing the job they do.

Hercwasonaroll · 15/11/2020 08:04

Tests should be available to people who have had direct contact with positive cases. It’s not my fault the government are so shit that they’re not!
Not until 14 days has passed they shouldn't. You could be incubating the virus and think that you don't have it because you tested negative. This is precisely why you don't test people who should be isolating.

He has been isolating himself in his bedroom and wearing a mask when he comes out but still as DH works in a massive distribution centre employing thousands of people, we’re having tests as he will need to make his staff aware if his is positive, although he will not be going to work obviously.
Yet more unnecessary use of NHS resources.

Moondust001 · 15/11/2020 08:05

@ViralVera

No click and collects available either.

Bit of a coincidence that 3 staff members test positive then DS gets it isn’t it Cookie? None of the rest of us have had symptoms. They are in his ‘bubble’. One of them for definite was in college on Monday, then got a positive test on Tuesday. I am fucking raging.

Even if he did contract it from them, I wonder who they might have contracted it from? Their students??? They are not to blame for anything other than doing their jobs. Your son is not to blame for anything either. Your lack of forethought is the problem - you had time to deal with this and didn't bother doing so.
BilboBercow · 15/11/2020 08:06

What a selfish hypocrite you are.

ZombieAttack · 15/11/2020 08:08

You still need to isolate for 14 days regardless of getting a test.

Lexilooo · 15/11/2020 08:08

And this is why many people have been advising that people get some extras in. They have been derided on here but it makes sense to have some tins/dried goods/longlife milk etc for exactly this eventuality. If you just buy one or two extra items per shop it doesn't cost much and doesn't cause supply issues.

YessicaHaircut · 15/11/2020 08:08

Please don’t go to Tesco OP. You know exactly why not.

You’ve had dozens of very helpful ideas here so use them instead.

Lifeispassingby · 15/11/2020 08:08

your DS has covid and you should be isolating for 14days so no amount of trying to justify you going to Tesco will make it ok. No matter how low you perceive the risk to be, you absolutely cannot risk it having been in direct contact with some confirmed to have covid. You also can not justify using tests unnecessarily and for no reason other than your curiosity

JMG1234 · 15/11/2020 08:09

Have to say I often slightly wince at posts on Mumsnet as I feel posters are given an unnecessarily hard time. On this occasion, I'm in complete agreement as the rules are there for good reason. There's a fair chance you're positive so you really can't go round Tesco, mask or not.
In terms of practical suggestions, we have lots of groups on Facebook where people volunteer help for people isolating due to COVID. As a start, I'd join your local group and put up a post asking for help. I think you'd be surprised at how many people are willing to help you. One for tomorrow rather than today, but I think our council can also arrange assistance so perhaps give them a call.

NeilBuchananisBanksy · 15/11/2020 08:10

Self isolation sucks- I had to do it a few weeks back and it was miserable. I also had to rely on others for help.

But I did it because we have to.

You'd be breaking the law to go to Tesco and both of you going in would be even worse- your logic is extremely warped.

You all have to isolate for 14 days. Having a test doesn't change that. Your DH can't go back to work either after a test.

To be honest, if Tesco is that close to the testing site, they are probably monitoring people and checking they don't go in after.

You are being extremely unreasonable but you don't seem to care, you are simply raging at the inconvenience. There are other options, you just don't want to use them.

DrierThanANunsNasty · 15/11/2020 08:11

Love the way these MN threads pan out.

OP: I’m going to do something utterly stupid, selfish and reckless. That’ll be okay right?

Everyone else: No

OP: BUT I WANT TO, here are 18 reasons why I can justify my stupid plan. Why isn’t anyone agreeing with me?! I came here to be agreed with!!

Everyone: Still no

OP then either goes quiet or says they’re not gonna do it but does it anyway.

OneLinePlease · 15/11/2020 08:11

Of all the levels of idiot I've seen online this tops the lot.

Why the fuck do rules not apply to you?

Absolutely disgusting selfish attitude.

You should be ashamed of yourself for even considering it.

Literally you going out for essentials (like squash, fgs) could kill someone. But who cares. You need your water flavoured, eh?

PatchworkElmer · 15/11/2020 08:11

Wtf?! Do not go shopping! You’re “raging” at people infecting DS (people who presumably didn’t know they had it). But you are planning to knowingly put others at risk to get your food. For goodness sake.

LOADS of delis, bakeries and greengrocers are delivering around here. People on Facebook groups are willing to help if you ask. Just get the basics needed fo survive until you can get a delivery.

Please do not go into a supermarket.

myhobbyisouting · 15/11/2020 08:13

God you're so rude.

"Makes sense no"? Well no, actually it doesn't. Have your food delivered. You can get a slot for midweek, you have food for a couple of days and takeaways are open.

As are butchers, farm shops, basically everything

notanothertakeaway · 15/11/2020 08:13
@Tarararara that's exactly what I came on to say. Surely you can ask one of the parents to pop and get you a few bits. My daughters are at high school and if they told me about a friend in that situation with parents I didn't know I'd go out and grab a few bits.

You have some food so it wouldn't need to be huge would it?
I agree with this. If someone I barely knew asked me to drop off a few bits and pieces in this situation, I would be more than happy to help. And I think most people would

I have the impression OP has already decided to go shopping and thereby risk spreading the virus to people like her son (oh, the hypocrisy)

However, I am reassured that so many people on this thread are taking the virus seriously

Mover437 · 15/11/2020 08:14

You're being very, very unreasonable on all accounts.

"does 12 hours really make a difference?" YES, the difference is that in those 12 hours, you learnt that a member of your household is positive, and therefore the chance that you may be carrying the virus has gone from low to high.

PPs have given you options. Use one of them.

ComDummings · 15/11/2020 08:14

@LondonlovesLola

You're furious that staff may have passed covid to your son, yet you're happy to goo round Tesco having been exposed and potentially infect others.

This

^^ this.
Libertylee · 15/11/2020 08:15

This is a classic “The rules don’t apply to me, as long as I’m all right Jack”. If everyone has this attitude, this virus grows. You have no right to rage at anyone.

Leflic · 15/11/2020 08:15

We are having 4 weeks of lockdown to bring down transmission and yet you are thinking of going out, knowing you are probably as a carrier to a supermarket? Honestly?

And unbelievably you are complaining about staff coming into work who probably like you, had a direct contact but no symptoms.

It’s lockdown and we’re supposed to be extra careful and going out less. And you’re most likely infected. Just make a bit of effort and stop being selfish.
