Okay I need to rant its friday and I have done 3 x 10 hour days back to back, I need wine and to release my anger

FYI this isnt for when its friends or family.

It's about people calling you: banks, clients or colleagues, insurance wanting to check something, whatever.

Its 2020. I'm sorry if you dont like it, but when you call me, you are intruding. We have WhatsApp, we have email. I get instant notifications on my phone. When you call me, you drag me out of whatever I'm doing (working usually) to demand my attention.

If it's about my bank account then guess what? Use your fucking fancy messaging system on the platform I'm assuming that's what it's there for and that way you will have a record.

If it's about work, guess what? I'm fucking working right now. On something that doesnt have to do with you. So send me an email and wait your turn. It's not all about you. And again: I would prefer to have what you say in writing.

Ooh and by the way you know voice messages? Yeah I dont listen to those. So you chat away but just FYI I listen to my voice messages except I dont, I just dial in and then hit 3 or whatever it is repeatedly until they are all deleted.

So dont waste my fucking time and stop jostling into my personal space. Seeing the missed call icon on my phone puts me on edge. If you are bored during lock down and need a human voice then I suggest you call a relative or friend. I AM BUSY. Oh and also: please dont email saying "would it be possible to arrange a call to discuss?". It wouldnt actually, see above.

Am I abnormal to hate this this much??

I don’t listen to voicemails and I don’t care about missing a call. Believe me, anyone who really needs you will find a way to get in touch. You can’t bloody escape them if you want to!
@Harrisismyparadise

You dont work do you?
Yes - I work 14 hour shifts! 😂

CrotchBurn · 13/11/2020 18:33

@Newfornow @SignOnTheWindow
Amen! 👌

OP posts:
PaperTowels · 13/11/2020 18:33

I'd far rather have a quick phone call than yet another email pinging into my life.

PaperTowels · 13/11/2020 18:34

And if you don't want voicemails, just set up your phone not to accept them.

IrkedEssex · 13/11/2020 18:34

I hate the telephone.

CrotchBurn · 13/11/2020 18:35

@Harrisismyparadise
Well what kind of job do you have where you can travel home from work, do a quick clean up, attend to pets and or children, cook a meal, wash, unwind a little, and be in bed within an hour???

It takes me at least four hours to do all that but then I am the worlds worst procrastinator 😂

Yabu and a bit unhinged to be honest.

A phone is for ringing. Don’t like it? Guess what - don’t answer.

If your this stressed about a phone call - you need to rethink your work/life choices a bit ....

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 13/11/2020 18:38

Turn off the voicemail facility on your phone. I did this 2 years ago when someone left a thoughtless message after my father died. It’s liberating! No more pointless messages, and if it’s important they can text or ring again later.
My phone is always on silent. I never answer unknown numbers and just block them straightaway. My phone is only for friends and family to contact me and not for randoms trying to sell me something.

I work in the charity sector. I don’t go to bed within the hour! That’s what my point was. Surely with 10 hr shift and 8 hr sleep you can do something other than eat when you get home?

FreshFreesias · 13/11/2020 18:38

I hate voice notes too! Just for people who want to ramble on without any interruptions.

Lazy247 · 13/11/2020 18:38

As someone who works in a hospital and frequently has to contact relatives on a withheld number- please answer your phones!

CrotchBurn · 13/11/2020 18:39

@lioncitygirl
I'm not unhinged in the slightest and as for your recommendation, guess what? I dont. See OP for more details!

This thread title is an extreme overreaction to someone making a phone call to you. Way way over the top reaction to what is a normal every day event, that someone in their right mind would not react to in that way

It is possible it may be a sign of a burgeoning mental health problem or having too much stress in your life? Maybe displacement anger?

CrotchBurn · 13/11/2020 18:40

@Harrisismyparadise
You're right :) I have a time management problem. After work I'm basically so drained i waste time, having been forced to tightly control it during the day if that makes sense!

OP posts:
nosswith · 13/11/2020 18:40

OP hope you can have a good night's sleep. You need it seemingly.

Aridane · 13/11/2020 18:41

@Mamagotskills

I don’t listen to voicemails either and hate phone calls
So do you only ever speak with someone in person?
CrotchBurn · 13/11/2020 18:41

@bumblingbovine49
Displacement anger? Does that mean "projecting"?

Marriedmumunsunghero · 13/11/2020 18:42

I'm interested in how old you are OP. Everyone under 24 I know feels this way and HATES phone calls. I have a younger sibling living abroad who causes my parents great anxiety but just refusing to answer the phone so they call me to call her - which is pointless as I think she has answered 1 phonecall from me in 4 years. I have told her noone will ever know if something bad does happen to her because of this. I wouldn't find it odd if she didn't pick up the phone for a month or two so if she were dead in a ditch - I wouldn't know.

I've just entered my 30s and I kinda get it but I find it rude and when it's my sister quite hurtful so I don't bother calling her despite us actually getting along. I don't particularly love phone calls but I just get on with it.

CrotchBurn · 13/11/2020 18:42

@nosswith
Thank you I plan on doing that! I have also been working weekends lately on top of the working week (nowhere near to the same extent but its psychological) and I did everything possible to make sure I dont have to do that this weekend. It could be I just need a weekend off :)

OP posts:
Comtesse · 13/11/2020 18:44

I hate voicemails too. You do sound quite wound up though Wine

Aridane · 13/11/2020 18:44

@VinylDetective

I never answer my phone unless I recognise the caller. I’m not even slightly bothered by the missed call icon if the call’s from an unknown number. Maybe try not being on edge, it’s liberating.
How luxurious!

I can’t do that as hospitals/ healthcare tends to be withheld numbers and numbers from visiting carers / nurses etc from unknown mobiles

(unwell loved one)

CrotchBurn · 13/11/2020 18:44

@Marriedmumunsunghero

I'm the same age as you so not as bad as your sister, but my brother is same as your sister: same age and same attitude. This is where I think its generational. You can see a general downward trend re phone calls.

Someone above said "this is what phones are for" except they arent really. Phones today are more like mini computers.

OP posts:
Warpdrive · 13/11/2020 18:45

Good grief, its because people don't check their emails that I HAVE to use the phone at work, otherwise I'd never get anything done.
