To be annoyed at people shopping in families/couples?

So I went to the supermarket to do my weekly shop today. Left the baby and my OH at home as I understand the current rules re Covid to be shop alone where possible.

Now I totally respect that in certain circumstances there has to be exceptions to this rule e.g. for lone parents, shopping with a vulnerable person etc.

However, there were a huge number of large families (with both parents) shopping today, lots and lots of couples (young/middle-aged) etc.

Why are so many people blatantly ignoring the guidance?

Hadn't realised that was guidance to be honest. I shop with my partner because we don't have a car and so can only bring home what we can carry. If only one of us went we'd be going more or less every day.

JenniferFromTheBlock · 08/11/2020 16:41

Be annoyed, until you are at the supermarket with your baby or someone else, for a "valid reason" and then the cycle of judgment focuses on you. YABU.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/11/2020 16:41

Because it's guidance, not law. You've answered your own question. No one is obligated to follow it.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 08/11/2020 16:43

I actually agree although I know it might not be popular. Of course there are certain situations that you have to have others with you and I'm completely supportive of that. In fairness I ran out of milk last week while DP was away and had to take DC with me to the shop because at 7 and 4 obviously I couldn't leave them alone.

This morning though I went to do a shop to keep us going (on my own as I had childcare) and there were 5 groups in the queue in front. Teenage (older teenagers) with parents . Two couples with another adult .

I get that I can't see which of those had a good reason for being in a group hence not making any comment and telling myself to just live and let be.

There is no way in hell they all had a genuine reason for it. Its bloody entitled.

Nicknamegoeshere · 08/11/2020 16:44

@HotChoc10 The majority of these couples were with trollies so I assume transport isn't an issue.

It’s one of the reasons that lockdown seems so pointless. If you close everything else families will crowd into essential shops for a trip out.

HitchikersGuide · 08/11/2020 16:45

Yabu. 'Guidance' is just that.

Fair enough it is guidance not law but surely there is no surprise it annoys those who have to wait longer to get into the shop because of it .
BashfulClam · 08/11/2020 16:46

We go together. I have specific dietary needs, DH can’t fathom what to get for me and he drives as I get anxious driving.

Rhine · 08/11/2020 16:47

Why does a couple need to go shopping together? It’s clingy, controlling and weird, Don’t get me started on whole families who do it. Just why?

Stripesnomore · 08/11/2020 16:47

I don’t understand the trolley point. I have no car and use a trolley. Why would I carry my shopping all around the supermarket as well as all the way to the bus or home?!

ReneeRol · 08/11/2020 16:47

There's nowhere else for them to go as a family. Guidance isn't the law.

Nicknamegoeshere · 08/11/2020 16:47

@JenniferFromTheBlock As stated in my original post, I appreciate there are exceptions. But no way on earth did every couple / family in that supermarket have a valid reason. Except they were ignoring the guidance. And yes, it's not the law, but that guidance is there for good reason.

If there’s one thing covid has taught me is that people will always find a way for the rules not to apply to them.

LST · 08/11/2020 16:47

YABU. I have mobility issues so go shopping with DP

missmouse101 · 08/11/2020 16:49

Yanbu OP. Sick of it. We should all be doing everything we can to stick to it and try to get this bloody virus to bugger off. I don't know why people don't get it.

Glassythighs · 08/11/2020 16:49

I don’t drive and DP is hopeless at choosing the shopping even with a list so we go together whether op likes it or not.

Nicknamegoeshere · 08/11/2020 16:49

@Stripesnomore Unless these couples were superheroes with muscles of steel there is no way they could be carrying home their trollies filled full with heavy goods.

It is annoying at the best of times. Shopping isn't a family outing. It's boring and annoying for kids.

Shop online or use click and collect and if you can't get a slot, go on your own. If you don't drive, leave the driver in the car.

That leaves more space for those who genuinely do need to go the shop, and to take someone with them whether that's the kids or conversely, a carer.

Thepilotlightsgoneout · 08/11/2020 16:50

Probably because it’s the only thing people can do at the moment?

DrManhattan · 08/11/2020 16:50

@Rhine
We go shopping as a couple because there is stuff we both want and its easier

Nicknamegoeshere · 08/11/2020 16:50

@ReneeRol What do you mean? So it's like a family day out?!!! Really?!!!

Hopdathelf · 08/11/2020 16:50

What a sad view to take. It’s perfectly normal for one person to help their partner or to run errands together. As you say, there’s no law against it.

converseandjeans · 08/11/2020 16:51

YANBU I can't work out why couples/families shop together at any other time. It's clear they guidelines are that one person per family unless there's a reason e.g. single parent, disability.

nosswith · 08/11/2020 16:51

I don't think it's government guidance, more something the supermarkets would prefer. Personally I regard shopping with another person unless they have a disability or are a young child something to be avoided if possible, but each to their own.

There are also some people who would get earache or worse if they went shopping and did not get all the correct things.
