To be annoyed at people shopping in families/couples?

Nicknamegoeshere · 08/11/2020 16:37

So I went to the supermarket to do my weekly shop today. Left the baby and my OH at home as I understand the current rules re Covid to be shop alone where possible.

Now I totally respect that in certain circumstances there has to be exceptions to this rule e.g. for lone parents, shopping with a vulnerable person etc.

However, there were a huge number of large families (with both parents) shopping today, lots and lots of couples (young/middle-aged) etc.

Why are so many people blatantly ignoring the guidance?

Also we go for a walk then stop at the shop on the way home, it’s hardly weird or clingy. People are so judgemental and love to project their own shit on others.

glitterelf · 08/11/2020 16:51

I went with my husband the other evening only because we had to do two shops, one for us and another for my sister who's currently recovering from covid.

Stripesnomore · 08/11/2020 16:51

Many people just aren’t really bothered about COVID spreading OP.

cologne4711 · 08/11/2020 16:52

@Rhine

Why does a couple need to go shopping together? It’s clingy, controlling and weird, Don’t get me started on whole families who do it. Just why?
My mum and I were ranting to each other about joined-at-the-hip couples the other day and she told me that she was at a friend's house some time ago before covid and the friend's cousin and her husband were there. When the cousin went to the toilet, the husband went upstairs and sat on the top stair near the door of the bathroom with her.

That takes it to a whole new level. On the plus side he didn't go in with her I guess!

@LST Please read my original post carefully.
@JenniferFromTheBlock As stated in my original post, I appreciate there are exceptions. But no way on earth did every couple / family in that supermarket have a valid reason. Except they were ignoring the guidance. And yes, it's not the law, but that guidance is there for good reason.
My point is though, you don't know the exceptions. Just as , when you are the exception , neither will anyone else. Just do the right things and those who don't, won't anyway.

TheFuckingDogs · 08/11/2020 16:55

My parents go together because they’re older and feel safer/happier going together

SomeSmotheringDreams · 08/11/2020 16:55

Because I do the cooking so want to look round the shop for inspiration and make the food choices myself. But I have a health condition which makes lifting the shipping in and out of the trolley very difficult.

If two people go food shopping together, who is 'controlling' whom?

Nicknamegoeshere · 08/11/2020 16:56

I'm astounded with some of these reasons cited!
Clearly some people couldn't care less about getting Covid. If I'm honest, I couldn't care less about them getting Covid either if they're that laissez - faire about it.
But I do care if they pass it on to my elderly parents who may die as a result.

I live in Scotland but during our first and second lockdowns my husband was working abroad so I had no choice but to take my baby shopping with me. I did get a few judgemental looks from Covid police like yourself. I’m sure they would have been far more judgy if I’d just left my child at home or going by the reaction on here to non vulnerable people using delivery slots I’d have been criticised for that too.

Biker47 · 08/11/2020 16:57

YABU.

Luckily we still have a smattering of free agency during all of this shite, to be able to do something innocuous as being able to shop together still.

justaweeone · 08/11/2020 16:57

Think it's up to me if I want to shop with my husband.

m0therofdragons · 08/11/2020 16:57

I don’t understand why whole families with 2 parents, 3 dc and grandma go shopping together during non covid times. What a bloody horrific palaver!

Comefromaway · 08/11/2020 16:58

I went with dh yesterday. He can’t drive due to a medical condition but I needed him to be there to get 10% discount so he came with me.

sst1234 · 08/11/2020 16:59

Why are people making excuses for why couples or families may need to go shopping together. No one needs an excuse, they should be able to do just because they want to. The pathetic COVID police need to quit with the monitoring of what people are doing. GROW UP.

J1112 · 08/11/2020 17:00

Annoying yes but what can you do? Before lockdown I would shop with my family and we’ve got barely any cases where I live so I can’t see why I can’t now when nothing has really changed here. Admittedly I have been shopping alone again and following the rules but DS (has autism and likes to go shopping) is really upset he can’t come along!

I also have anxiety and some days I’m fine other days I really need a helping hand. But I would be judged if went shopping with hubby!

Nicknamegoeshere · 08/11/2020 17:00

Don't people get why more than one person shopping increases risk? Or do they simply not care? So, in essence, people are putting lives at risk because they "like shopping together" or see it as a bit of a jolly out?!!

OP posts:
UsernameN0Tavailable · 08/11/2020 17:00

Yanbu I've said the same thing. The amount of families with both parents and 2/3 children or teens in tow in supermarkets at the moment is ridiculous.

At a time that we're supposed to be reducing contact having 4 extra people tag along to do the family shop when 1 person could do it is selfish and idiotic.

Stripesnomore · 08/11/2020 17:01

It will only get worse OP, as more people have had COVID they will no longer care about protecting themselves and don’t give a toss about protecting others.

It is ultimately up to the government though. There are so many pupil who won’t keep to a guideline unless it is made into an enforced law. That’s why we have laws in the first place.

Warsawa31 · 08/11/2020 17:01

It's Human nature to want to be with other people. I go shopping on my own but to be honest I couldn't care less what other people are doing. If they are distancing themselves etc what's the issue?

The lockdowns will have less and less effect over time because compliance rates will drop. If this virus was Ebola if understand the reaction but it's not - most people understand the balance.

I also think people who say "if we just follow the rules it will go away" are kidding themselves. It's going no where whatever we do. It has a death rate of less than 1% is our response proportional at the moment ?

GeorgiaMcGraw · 08/11/2020 17:01

Yabu. We need some normalcy. We can wear masks, sanitise everything and keep social distance to mitigate risks. Sometimes i want to go into the shop with my husband. Doesn't take up much more space.

NorbertMeubles · 08/11/2020 17:01

My supermarket was extra busy this morning because of this. If they limit numbers of people who go in and half of the people are families it is annoying. I saw over 5 families. Surely one parent could stay at home with the kids whilst the other shops.

Nicknamegoeshere · 08/11/2020 17:02

@Meepmeeep I'm referring to families I saw with both parents.

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 08/11/2020 17:02

My husband put himself at risk every day to teach your kids who refuse to social distance and are always being caught without masks. If he needs to take me shopping with him he jolly well can.

WindsorBlues · 08/11/2020 17:03

Me and DH go every other week together. I do the driving because he can't and since I'm in my third trimester I really need him there to lift the heavy bags. We also shop for two household our own and my nans, there is no way he'd be able to trail it all home on the bus.

I find the PP comment that couples shopping together is "controlling" strange 🤔
