I'm so glad it's not another election - even if my preferred candidate was an absolute shoo-in.

74 days until Eviction Day.

DH had to run an errand to our local Lowe's. He said that there's nary a Scrotus flag flying truck to be seen. This time last week you couldn't swing a cat without seeing one.

I have been waiting for this day since 2016. I am absolutely fucking thrilled to see Trump voted out of office.

To my fellow Biden voters, thank you! We did it!

They can call Seth Meyer again. Grin

So pleased that the adults are back in the room in the US 🥂

Just need the UK to follow suit now.

Yeah, that guy is full of shit. The current POTUS doesn't have to concede, that's just a formality. And the 'special election in the House' he refers to is in the case of an electoral college tie, which ain't gonna happen.
AcrossthePond55 · 07/11/2020 19:40

Just out of curiosity, do our UK friends think that Biden's win could really affect BoJo's tenure as PM?

I plead ignorance of 'how things are done', but how could this possibly lead to a vote of no confidence?

He will have to pull his socks up now and start acting like an adult. Until now he had no-one to admonish him as Trump didn't give a fuck about Europe or the Northern Ireland Peace Treaty. Plus, he'll be an outlier now and Biden will always pick up the phone to Merkel and Macron before Downing Street. It's playground stuff but Boris has suddenly found out that the playground bully he was mates with has been expelled from school, and looking across the playground there not many playmates left.

@AcrossthePond55 Not sure about any effect on his tenure, but its interesting that earlier (before the result was called) BBC was reporting that Boris was now saying he is hopeful of a deal with the EU.... If I was old and cynical (which of course I am not.... Grin ) I'd think he was hedging his bets in case he lost his bestie.....

Thanks, Stirling. So Bojo has lost his 'bully back up'. Nice.

@Delphinium20 that’s a powerful picture.

Can anyone in America enlighten me about what (if) there is in place to ensure that an aggrieved outgoing President can't just spend all the money and sabotage Covid vaccine efforts out of spite... or worse?

Does he still have full access to the nuclear buttons?

I don't think there can be a vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson as he is leader of the party which has a huge majority in Government, though there may be an internal push inside the Tory party to replace him as their leader and thus as Prime Minister. The word I'm seeing, though (no idea how true it is) is that he will be walking away from it all the moment his hopeless Brexit no deal is done, on 1st January 2021, or not long after, pleading Covid, family matters and poverty. There will then be another equally unappealing leader elected to the head of the Tory party and that will be that till the next General Election, which can't come too soon for many.

Important Senate election in Georgia, 5th January. The other date to remember.

The one that could give Harris the deciding vote.

CaraDuneRedux · 07/11/2020 19:51

Across There are rumours of an internal party coup planned for next spring, but at the moment I'd dismiss them as just that, rumours. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if BoJo left voluntarily after he's perpetrated a hard Brexit and before the shit really hits the fan

I'm slightly hazy about the exact process for the Tories shifting their leader but I think it goes roughly like this. A
The 1922 committee (Tory back benchers) would meet, vote to express no confidence in the PM, put up a "stalking horse" candidate (usually a backbencher no one has heard of - the function is simply to kick off a leadership contest) then see who that flushes out by way of serious candidates.

NB this is to do with the PM's position within the Tory party and is different from a Westminster wide vote of no confidence in the government, which is not going to happen because the Tory majority is way too big.

Willowkins · 07/11/2020 19:51

Across the thing is that a no-deal Brexit means we need a trade deal with, well everyone really. I was never convinced we'd get that with Trump anyway as he seems quite capricious. Is Biden likely to turn us down? If so, then the people who want his job could use that to force a leadership election (that is Conservative Party stays in power but he is replaced) but I think it would take a lot more than that (breakdown of food chain, civil unrest say) to cause a vote of no confidence.
