About DH loud eating and drinking

I don't know if the lockdowns are getting to me. DH's loud eating and drinking is really getting to me. He eats snacks (crisps, nuts) every evening and I'm sick of the constant loud crunching. Every drink is swilled loudly around his mouth before swallowing. It used to just be wine he did this with but it's tea now too. Any drink. It's infuriating. Does this kind of thing bother anybody else? I have always been sensitive to loud eating so not sure it's just me.

It destroys me. I have to leave the room.

MustardMitt · 05/11/2020 21:59

My husband must have a completely empty skull because every single thing he puts in his mouth bloody echoes.

I just look at him very conspicuously and he tries to be quieter, but honestly he does chew with his mouth closed he’s just noisy!

MonkeyPuddle · 05/11/2020 22:00

DP doesn’t eat crisps near me as I can’t handle it. He’s a good egg.

CoffeeAndCake3 · 05/11/2020 22:03

I've shouted at my husband nightly for a very very long time for this. It's a miracle we still live together. I think it is grounds for separation

AfterSchoolWorry · 05/11/2020 22:03

You might have misophonia.

FrankiesKnuckle · 05/11/2020 22:04

It's called misophonia.

Mines getting worse due to being peri menopausal I think.

We do laugh about it, but at the same time I'm wondering just how many patio slabs I'd have to obtain....

PersonaNonGarter · 05/11/2020 22:05

It’s just unbearable. I have to move away.

Buggabooboo · 05/11/2020 22:05

I wonder if alleged misophonia (is that the word?) is actually just men with poor table manners torturing their wives.

But I've no advice OP. Hide the snacks? Crunch at the same time he does so you can only hear yourself?

Buggabooboo · 05/11/2020 22:06

Sorry, crossed posts there. So misophonia is the word I was looking for!

flaviaritt · 05/11/2020 22:06

Misophonia just means you hate a particular noise. I do. I fucking hate the sound of anyone eating.

Tootsietoot · 05/11/2020 22:06

Mine has taken to eating with his mouth open. I'll do a joint patio stone purchase Frankie. He also licks his lips like his mum. Makes me stabbing as fuck.

Jayneisagirlsname · 05/11/2020 22:07

DH drives me mad with this. Sometimes I can handle it by reminding myself that it's my problem, not his.
Other times, it's all I can hear so the only choices are to kill him, or to leave the room.
So far, leaving the room has been my choice...

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 05/11/2020 22:07

Ltb!?

I can't stand it. Supposedly it's worse if you're more stressed than normal.

goteam · 05/11/2020 22:07

Oh wow, misophonia. Maybe it's that. I remember sharing some chips after a night out and he ate them like a pig at a trough, mouth open etc and I told him so and was completely disgusted. I guess I could have backed out then as it really does bother me nowadays. Urgh.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 05/11/2020 22:07

That and the nose blowing and subsequent wiping, and the coughing.

😡😡😡

goteam · 05/11/2020 22:09

The chip incident was early in the relationship I mean

Earphones, play music that you like. For your sanity.

user1470132907 · 05/11/2020 22:09

My husband chews with his mouth closed but the noise is incredible. Think a lot of it is the heavy nose breathing he does because his mouth is closed (polyp, allegedly). Sometimes his jaw clicks for good measure.

I find it very hard to sit at the dinner table with him and leave the room if he’s snacking on crisps etc.

It’s not his table manners - his dad eats like a pig so husband is at pains not to be the same. It is literally how his oral and nasal cavities and jaw are made, I swear!

FoxtrotOscarPoppet · 05/11/2020 22:10

Yep - loud eating, loud drinking and loud mouth breathing.
When the SC come to stay they eat with their mouths open. Between them all it sounds like feeding time at the zoo. Angry

I’m pregnant and hormonal so slightly less tolerant than normal. Grin

goteam · 05/11/2020 22:13

Both glad not to be alone and sorry for those enduring these nightly horrors. We have music on but the crunching overrides it.

Why do people on here immediately jump to misophonia? I’m sure some people do have misophonia, but most of the time it’s just a case of being repulsed by disgusting eating noises and it’s perfectly understandable, it doesn’t need to be pathologised. Eating like a pig should be the thing that is pathologised.

I don’t know if it’s me, but over the last 10 or 20 years I’ve noticed peoples’ eating getting more gross. Maybe I’ve just started noticing it more, but it seems to be acceptable for people to chew like horses. Look at that bloke on Master Chef for example, if somebody sat next to me and slapped their chops like that I’d want to stab them with my knife and fork.

YouUnlockedTheGateAnd · 05/11/2020 22:30

Noise . Cancelling. Headphones

I swear it is the only reason my husband is NOT under the patio.

SlopesOff · 05/11/2020 22:33

Teeth banging together. I don't know how he does it, but chomp, bang, bang, bang, gulp.

I have thought about buying a trough.

ISpeakBecauseICan · 05/11/2020 22:37

Eating noises make my blood boil, I have to leave the room. Sniffing also fills me with rage Angry

jgjgjgjgjg · 05/11/2020 22:51

It's breathing noises I can't bear. Whereever I go in the house he is there breathing! It drives me mad. So I can be sitting on the bed and he's a good 4 or 5 metres away in the ensuite bathroom and I can hear every breath, in and out. Or we're sitting at each end of the sofa browsing phones/tablet etc and I can't concentrate because the silence is filled with his LOUD breathing!!
