Neighbour asked us not to do fireworks?

lockdownqueen · 05/11/2020 16:57

I'm in a group chat with girls on our new build estate I've sent out a pre warning as hubby has gone and bought some. Everyone was fine and said they will be in there gardens to watch then one of the girls asked us not too as her dog has severe panic attacks.

don't know what to do? Kids have been looking forward to them.

aibu to go ahead and do them?

@Barbie222

How did dogs manage in the past? Fireworks have always been around.
I'm pretty sure that in the evolution of the dog, that fireworks have not been around! Probably very loud noises such as that signalled danger, such as lightening, natural phenomena and the instinct is to flee. Also, in reference to posts saying they keep their cat inside on firework night - you are very lucky to only have them on one night in your area. We have them over the course of about a month. Pretty much the last couple of weeks of Oct and into the beginning of November.
TheCatsWhisker · 07/11/2020 18:16

I hate fireworks, and also find them pretty fucking boring.

If they could be allowed one night that would be ok, but where I live we usually have a week before and after bonfire night with the bastard things going off.

I don't get the appeal.

KittyMcV · 07/11/2020 18:19

@VitalSpark

There is only one way round the problem, ban their sale to unlicensed people. If people want to buy dogs (or other pets) then they should be properly licensed and should know how to train their animals to deal with loud noises.
For one thing - my dogs have never been 'bought' - they have generally been rescued. Probably from people who think that sentient beings can be 'programmed' to react how we wish them to, and then disposed of - like garbage. I have tried through the years to train myself to react better to various things - and failed. I should have a word with my parents I suppose!! ;-)

@Smallsteps88

Just read about Dettori on the local news page. What an utter twat to have a 30min display next to a field of horses.

I8toys · 07/11/2020 18:27

Someone's just wasted about £200 on fireworks going off for the last 20 minutes - I know which house it is a couple of doors away - they've got a huge spiderman on the front of it. Showing off types. The bigger the bang, the smaller the........

pinkksugarmouse · 07/11/2020 18:27

Animal lover here. I think home displays are potentially dangerous and should be banned. I know of many people who have traumatised dogs this time of the year and not all can be sedated if they have health conditions.

Yes it's up to you but I think a bit of compassion wouldn't go a miss here and it's an opportunity to teach your children about caring for animals and being a good neighbour. If you have to have fireworks just get some sparklers.

Winterterrace · 07/11/2020 18:57

More fireworks again tonight. More prolonged noise. The neighbours letting off fireworks ( for the past 2 hours or so) are the same ones who’ve ignored lockdown and currently have extra cars parked outside their houses. I hope they set themselves on fire.

catchabreak2020 · 07/11/2020 19:07

It’s not one night a year, it’s been going on for days, well over a week near me. It’s not just dogs so mentioning peoples ‘precious fur baby’s’ as a way to justify yourself... get over yourself you selfish horrible people. It’s not just dogs, it’s horses and many other animals who are NOT pets and CANNOT be ‘trained’ not to like fireworks. When will it get through to some people. The end of the day you will never convince some selfish people what they’re doing is wrong. Your children will cope not having fireworks. If they can’t maybe you can ‘train’ them to.

NameChange84 · 07/11/2020 19:10

It’s been going on for the past hour and a half again non stop here. Started on the 1st November and so far not had a firework free night. It’s not just one night Hmm

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/11/2020 19:20

@NameChange84

You're not in the Yemen are you?

understandalotmore · 07/11/2020 19:28

I hope they set themselves on fire.

Wow!

Winterterrace · 07/11/2020 19:43

Playing with small explosives for entertainment isn’t the safest hobby.

understandalotmore · 07/11/2020 19:55

But very little need to say you hope they set themselves on fire @Winterterrace, that's truly sick and vile.

I think letting off fireworks (which is legal and alllowed, even though you may not like them) compared to hoping someone set themselves on fire says a lot more about you than them.

I'm glad I'm not your neighbour.

They’re having a fireworks party in the middle of a lockdown, so they are breaking the law and obviously don’t give a shit about anyone else’s health.

As you’ve failed to figure it out, I should say that I don’t literally hope they set fire to themselves. The NHS is overstretched as it is.

Winterterrace · 07/11/2020 20:16

Snap NC84

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/11/2020 20:23

@namechange84

Ah Manchester, that'll be be the Imperial War Museum (North) getting rid of their out-of-date ordnance.

Jenstar123 · 07/11/2020 20:25

@Smallsteps88
It’s sick isn’t it @Jenstar123? Who on earth could enjoy something they know is causing that much trauma to someone else? It’s one thing if you dont know, but once you do, and you do it anyway? There’s something worrying about that.

It really is awful, I still don’t understand what sort of person could be so heartless after the neighbours reply and have zero compassion for a living animal. Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean morally you SHOULD.

understandalotmore · 07/11/2020 20:29

As you’ve failed to figure it out, I should say that I don’t literally hope they set fire to themselves. The NHS is overstretched as it is.

Of course @Winterterrace ! You sound awful!

Winterterrace · 07/11/2020 20:32

You’re very literal minded. Would it help if I included a Wink so you could tell that I’m not being serious?

understandalotmore · 07/11/2020 20:32

They’re having a fireworks party in the middle of a lockdown, so they are breaking the law and obviously don’t give a shit about anyone else’s health.*

I'm not sure after that comment you have any moral high ground!

Jimineycricket · 07/11/2020 20:33

I would give her the time you ll be doing them as previous posters said, it ll probably be 10 mins max. I had a dog that hated them so used to cuddle her for the 10 minutes or so. I wouldn’t have dreamt of telling neighbours that they and their kids couldn’t enjoy a fireworks display on ONE night of the year. It’s selfish. My daughter is terrified of dogs. Wouldn’t ask neighbours not to get one or dog walkers to disappear when we play at our local rec.

understandalotmore · 07/11/2020 20:34

@Winterterrace no emoji was contained in your thread saying you hope they set themselves on fire?

Too much 🍷

Or name changed and forgotten which thread is which?

Winterterrace · 07/11/2020 20:36

I was asking if you needed emojis to help you understand tone. The answer appears to be yes.

understandalotmore · 07/11/2020 20:41

I think you've made it clear what sort of person you are @Winterterrace, emojis won't help!

I hope your neighbours enjoy their fireworks safely.

You may not like them, but that's life. Go live in the middle of nowhere, where you don't need to listen to fireworks.
