Neighbour asked us not to do fireworks?

lockdownqueen · 05/11/2020 16:57

I'm in a group chat with girls on our new build estate I've sent out a pre warning as hubby has gone and bought some. Everyone was fine and said they will be in there gardens to watch then one of the girls asked us not too as her dog has severe panic attacks.

don't know what to do? Kids have been looking forward to them.

aibu to go ahead and do them?

OP posts:

@wewillmeetagain I dont think it's as simple as peoples "likes and dislikes". people with PTSD do not simply dislike loud bangs. people like me who have their own reasons for being frightened by loud sudden noises do not dislike them. dogs who are terrified by them dont dislike them. it's much more than peoples likes and dislikes.

they're a reason they are banned for home use in other countries. it's about time they did it over here.

rwalker · 05/11/2020 18:45

It's all about compromise as both sides have a point you've given notice and keeping it short .

I hate fireworks don't get the appeal
We have had similar coments on our local FB group page .It hasn't gone particular well but very entertaining . Lots of comments (arguments ) about people being inconsiderate letting fireworks off .Lots off people commenting how inconsiderate that some local dogs owner are around here constant barking and we have a fantastic walk very near us fields and paths but you can't use it as dog shit everywhere . So the jist of it is they will be as considerate as the local dog owners.

Smallsteps88 · 05/11/2020 18:46

Except that fireworks are legal and fouling the streets with dog shit is an offence!

So I’m not sure why you made the comparison then, knowing that you’re not comparing like for like Confused bit silly of you.

HDDD · 05/11/2020 18:47

Fireworks are antisocial noise polluters

mangoesforever · 05/11/2020 18:47

@GuillermoVanHelsing

If I knew it was going traumatise an animal I couldn't do it. I think most kids would understand that tbh.
Agree with this. I can't understand how people can enjoy them knowing nearby pets and wildlife are shitting themselves.
mangoesforever · 05/11/2020 18:48

@ZoeTurtle

It's more important to teach your children empathy (and have some yourself) than to set off fireworks.

Can't wait for private firework sales to banned.

Agree.
MargeWhereDidMyFingersLand · 05/11/2020 18:48

Should I let off explosives in my postage stamp garden? My DC will be disappointed if we don't have window rattling explosives. Yes the lad down the road with autism is terrified, as are god knows how many animals and other vunerable people, but pretty colours! Maybe DH will blow his fingers off or it will set a field on fire, jolly good fun. Hmm

mangoesforever · 05/11/2020 18:49

Then as a good dog owner it is on her to train her dog and desensitize it to the sound

That's hilarious

WitchQueenofDarkness · 05/11/2020 18:49

They’ve been every night this week and no doubt will continue over the weekend.

If it was one night I wouldn’t mind but it isn’t. The sooner they are banned for home use the better

MaskingForIt · 05/11/2020 18:49

@Finfintytint

If you are in the middle of an estate it’s quite antisocial anyway.
Letting fireworks off in the middle of housing estate is like walking into a supermarket without a mask on.

It clearly shows you only care about yourself and don’t give a damn about anyone else.

Smallsteps88 · 05/11/2020 18:51

They’re banned here in NI for home use but assholes still them off. A 2 year old girl was injured on Halloween when one came into her garden and hit her on the face.

Lazypuppy · 05/11/2020 18:53

Laugjing at the posters who think you can get a terrified dog out in the car or the qalk in the middle of fireworks!😂🤦‍♀️

My poor dog is hiding under the table shaking uncontrollably, but don't worry as long as you enjoy the bangs 👍🏻

Smallsteps88 · 05/11/2020 18:54

My own child has SEN and can’t cope with fireworks. Halloween was awful for him (and us) he was still a nervous wreck all day Sunday.

Walkingthedog46 · 05/11/2020 18:54

I hate the bangers! Someone in our street lets off one after another after another. They literally shake the house! His preferred time seems to be after midnight.

LA115 · 05/11/2020 18:55

Yanbu, It was considerate of you to let everyone know in advance. But your neighbours dog is her responsibility I think she was unfair to ask you this.

mangoesforever · 05/11/2020 18:55

@Jenstar123

I can't do anything else Oh please what a load of shit. You have decided it’s more important to you that your kids aren’t mildly disappointed than the health and well-being of your neighbours pet. You could have used this to teach your kids about empathy and respect towards others but instead you have been a selfish twat. Let’s hope you never need a favour in return from that neighbour.

Arrivederla · 05/11/2020 18:55

@shitinmyhandsandclap

Fireworks should not be sold to the public, too many stupid people get hold of them, many many many reports of them being thrown in parks, at cars - they've been going off here for weeks.

You should need a licence to buy fireworks and for organised displays only, whoever thought it was a good idea to let randoms buy explosives?!

This. Couldn't agree more.
Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 05/11/2020 18:55

Ilovesooty, to answer your question the op is not acting anti socially for the majority of people.
One person in the group objected and everyone else didn't have a problem with it.
It's not illegal, it's not classes as anti social behaviour, it's something that occurs every year on this date and the days surrounding it.

I should say I personally don't like fireworks and don't think they should be sold to private households, just organised displays but that's just my opinion, it's perfectly legal to have them, the dog owner must know this and can't expect someone to make allowances for a dog.

Feedingthebirds1 · 05/11/2020 18:55

I know fireworks are a sensitive subject, but some posters do seem to be piling in on the OP as if she is solely responsible for all their evils. It isn't the OP who's been letting them off for the last four weeks, and it won't be her letting them off from 4.00 this afternoon until 2.00 in the morning.

When I was little, the big aerial fireworks weren't around. You bought a selection box of small ones - silver fountains, traffic lights etc that fizzed quietly, and usually one banger per box that compared to today's bangs just went sort of pffft... I'd love to see those back. You can still get them, but not many people do and the few I've tried have been pretty crap. Whatever they were called they all did the same thing.

But I'd be happy to see the big, loud ones banned.

namechangefail2020 · 05/11/2020 18:56

Her dog isn't more important than your kids. She can take him for a walk for a bit. It's once and kids need their fun right now and as much normality as poss.

gypsywater · 05/11/2020 18:56

I would find it hard to go ahead knowing a poor dog is going to suffer as a result

AldiAisleofCrap · 05/11/2020 18:57

@MaskingForIt Letting fireworks off in the middle of housing estate is like walking into a supermarket without a mask on.

It clearly shows you only care about yourself and don’t give a damn about anyone else.

My kids an I have been shielding since March, currently say in the garden having the best time watching multiple neighbours fireworks.

Unsure33 · 05/11/2020 18:57

If you have a dog that is terrified trust me there is not a lot you can do .

But I would not stop people doing it but at least if I knew the time I could try and keep them in a room with music a thunder vest and try some coming herbal plug ins and know not to take them out where they could bolt with panic .

None of the above helped with one of my dogs btw . He shook from head to foot very violently.

My current dog is not so bothered .

SecretSpAD · 05/11/2020 18:57

@SchadenfreudePersonified Waitrose seems to be the only supermarket that sells them but you can buy online. I'd say get stocked up quickly as they are always selling out.

Skyla2005 · 05/11/2020 18:58

My dog is shaking and terrified. I can hear his heart beating out of his chest and I can not console him. They are soo loud I think of all the horses and other animals aswell that are terrified with no one to comfort them. I hate them. I want to open my window and scream fuck off fireworks and fuck off you selfish people
