Neighbour asked us not to do fireworks?

I'm in a group chat with girls on our new build estate I've sent out a pre warning as hubby has gone and bought some. Everyone was fine and said they will be in there gardens to watch then one of the girls asked us not too as her dog has severe panic attacks.

don't know what to do? Kids have been looking forward to them.

aibu to go ahead and do them?

My dog loves fireworks as long as he's outside and can see what's going on. It's the only time I let him bark unrestrained in the garden. If I keep him in he gets very stressed.
So he's currently standing outside making a hell of a din. He'll stop as soon as the neighbours finish their display.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 05/11/2020 18:25

My dogs get stressed with fireworks too. On days that I know there will be fireworks Christmas, New Year's Day, 4th of July I close the dog door at sundown, close the blinds, and turn the tv up a little louder than usual. They see nothing and what they hear is no worse than a thunderstorm. Of course, they are always welcomed to sit on my lap too!

Candyfloss99 · 05/11/2020 18:25

I don't know why you let everyone know if you weren't going to take any notice of any objections. You really can let your children down and teach them that everything doesn't revolve round their wants.

ButtonMoonLoon · 05/11/2020 18:25

I can’t believe you’re going ahead when you’ve expressly been told that it will cause suffering to their dog.
One persons enjoyment should NEVER top trumps another’s pain 🙁

SecretSpAD · 05/11/2020 18:25

People who say take your dog for a walk or take your dog out in the car obviously have never had dogs. There are fucking fireworks everywhere because selfish arseholes can't bear to miss their 10 minutes of seeing their money go up in smoke. My dog won't even go outside for a wee let alone a walk - where he is likely to be shit scared by fireworks.

It is irresponsible and selfish. For those who don't care about animals, what about all the people who will get burns tonight?

Fireworks should be display only.

For fellow dog owners - I give mine Pooch and Mutt calming treats on nights like this. He's very anxious and they are brilliant at calming him down. Have lavender, Chammoile and valerian. He's quiet and sitting at my feet at the moment but still too terrified to move.

fairydustandpixies · 05/11/2020 18:26

Thank you neighbours who are setting off fireworks which has caused my 13yr old dog to collapse and have a fit. I'll send you the vet's bill shall I? Just don't bang on my door at 6pm saying the builder finishing off my shower enclosure is keeping your kids awake.

FrankieChips · 05/11/2020 18:27

You don’t need fireworks! Watch a display on TV! It won’t just be your neighbour’s dog that will be distressed, it will be animals all around. Pets and wild animals.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/11/2020 18:27

@Shitonthebloodything

I never understand this. If people know their pets are going to be frightened at this time of year, every year then isn't there something they can do about it? Maybe I'm just being heartless because I'm not a dog person and my cats have never been bothered by them but surely it's to be expected each year.
No there isn't!

I've tried cuddling, sedatives, thundercoats, darkened rooms, making safe "nests" in indoor cages, behind sofas etc - poor dogs can't even relax enough to keep still.

Fireworks are a nightmare!

They are not just distressing for pets, but for wildlife and farm animals. When I walk my dogs after bonfire night, the fields and parks are littered with spent rockets. Local farmer had a cow which aborted a few years ago, and a neighbours rabbit died of fright in its hutch.

A lot of elderly people dread them, too. They can cause fires, too.

You can probably tell that I feel strongly that they should be banned from public sale.

They're bliddy awful!

Weebitawks · 05/11/2020 18:27

"my dog might die"

"But I like the pretty lights"

Fss

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 05/11/2020 18:28

If you told your children about the dog having severe panic attacks, would they still want you to go ahead with the fireworks? The kids I know wouldn’t.

Astella22 · 05/11/2020 18:28

Awful of you OP shows a complete lack of compassion, why ask if u couldn’t be couldn’t be bothered with the answer.

CoronaIsShit · 05/11/2020 18:28

I think it’s the height of selfishness to own an animal that shits in the street or park, barks incessantly causing nuisance, terrifies some people and could (and does) attack people causing serious injuries.

Why should somebody’s CHOICE to keep an animal, trump somebody else’s choice to partake in a perfectly legal activity which lasts minutes.

Do go ahead OP. If the other women in the WhatsApp group take against you for it Hmm, then they’re not worth knowing anyway.

Goslowlysideways · 05/11/2020 18:29

Of course you shouldn't. What kind of person would go ahead with this knowing you'll cause an animal severe distress!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/11/2020 18:29

Thanks, Secret - I'll try these next year.

EatDessertFirst · 05/11/2020 18:29

@stillsomewhatsheldonesque

I’m bloody sure shiny bang bangs wouldn’t be happening in their houses if they’d experienced explosives for real *@EatDessertFirst* I claw my way through this time of year.

Have them in organised displays by all means. I can get myself far away. I would rather they were either silent for home use or banned completely.

It is hard.

Exactly. I really, sincerely feel for you and everyone else that suffers. I have no first-hand knowledge but is awful just to witness his distress. DP is stable all year with correct medication and has had a lot of therapy. Fireworks trigger him like nothing else can. If it was kept to organised display only, it wouldn't matter as he and you and others could avoid them.

But no. Selfish twats must have their shiny things.

Inastatus · 05/11/2020 18:29

@hiredandsqueak - I’m interested to hear that the thundershirt works for your dog. Was your dog very scared before getting one? I might have to get one for ours as she’s currently panting and shaking uncontrollably 🙁

stackemhigh · 05/11/2020 18:30

That’s difficult. You should not have given a heads up if you were not willing to act on feedback

Eh?! The woman has had a heads up to plan for this @Bluntness100 !

Skyla2005 · 05/11/2020 18:31

People saying take the dog out for a walk ! When a dog is petrified of fireworks he won’t go out for about two weeks around bonfire night

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/11/2020 18:31

Minutes!

Bollox does it!

They've been setting them off for a week here and the enhanced performance tonight has been going on since just after 4.00.

It wasn't even dark!

ndo4000 · 05/11/2020 18:32

As someone who is sitting with her dog who is shaking because of the bangs going on outside, YABU.

I'm pretty sure it would have been a good opportunity to help your children understand about considering other people's (or animals) feelings.

Have you tried this? It's worked wonders for my little scared girl.

Aside from the impact on your neighbours dog most new build estates are so packed I think it's dangerous to even consider home fireworks. Home displays should be banned without a licence where a fire officer should certify the planned location is safe and user competent. Too many accidents.

sweetkitty · 05/11/2020 18:33

My dog is shaking on my knee, the cats are running around all spooked or hiding, even the house rabbits are jumping.

You’ve got to remember dogs hearing is so much more sensitive than ours so even with the tv turned up loud they can hear them far more intensively than we can and can hear a lot more of them too. Must be awful for them, I hate them too.

Smallsteps88 · 05/11/2020 18:33

Urgh! YABU. Don’t do it (you’re probably out doing them right now)

Not just for the dog but for all the children who are terrified, the elderly people who will leap out of their skin, the people who don’t understand what they are and can’t have it explained and the animals that don’t feel like dying of heart failure or broken limbs as they try and escape. Never mind the rubbish you’ll never pick up and the damage that can cause to animals or property.

stackemhigh · 05/11/2020 18:33

I don’t have a dog nor have I ever released a firework but I find it funny the people calling OP selfish funny when some dog owners are so entitled and selfish by not picking up their dog shit or letting them off the leash and approach strangers! And it’s not the dogs’ fault, I love dogs, it’s the owners!
