I am also worried, but it's worth remembering that most absentee ballots in this election are blue--Democrats were much more reluctant to go to the polls with Covid.

Lockheart · 04/11/2020 22:23

I was feeling nervous earlier but I'm now cautiously optimistic.

I think Nevada is expected to declare today now - previously they'd said they'd declare tomorrow but I understand they've brought it forward.

JammyGem · 04/11/2020 22:26

Is it just the postal votes left to count for Nevada then?

(Sorry, I really don't have a clue!)

sergeilavrov · 04/11/2020 22:29

@JammyGem It's just mail in ballots, and those dropped off, but importantly in Nevada these are from all areas of the state - unlike the trends we're seeing in a number of other close races. This means they are less likely to skew as far toward Biden as in the likes of Georgia and Pennsylvania. Today, Nevada will update their results, but still keep in mind the state probably won't be 'called' until they're closer to counting all ballots later this week.

somelemons · 04/11/2020 22:30

@MagicSummer

Why do you all want Biden? He is a terminal duffer. Mark my words, if he wins, you will wish Trump was back in 3 months.
He's not a raging narcissist, a deluded megalomaniac or a dangerous psychopath though, so it's all good.
YouAreMySunshine123 · 04/11/2020 22:33

Trump 214

It's looking good 🙏🙏🙏

US elections, as well as uk to some extent, provide great entertainment but my god they're divisive. How is anyone going to even try to reconcile both sides after all this? We know Trump won't even try, why would he?

Nancydrawn · 04/11/2020 22:41

Absolutely true re: Nevada, but it's also true that the county with the fewest votes counted right now is Clark County, which is Las Vegas and swings bluer than anywhere else in the state (Biden currently ahead 53-45).

Fwiw, I'm no Joe Biden partisan--he wasn't my preferred primary candidate, for instance. But he is not loathsome, and he respects norms of democracy and decency. Even by that low bar, it's very clear.

Nancydrawn · 04/11/2020 22:43

If it were like Parliament, then there wouldn't be anything close to this level of divisivenessDemocrats hold the house by a decent margin. And if it were by the popular vote, it wouldn't be closeJoe Biden's probably going to finish off at around 3-4 million ahead. It's just this electoral system.

However, I agree that it's going to be really tense.

tobee · 04/11/2020 22:44

@Newjez

I think the democrats do need to think about why trump was so popular

They were supposed to have done that after 2016 🤨

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 22:55

Honestly if George Bush Jr was to become President right now instead of Trump I'd take it.

I'm an anyone but Trump rather than being particularly pro Biden.

JacobReesMogadishu · 04/11/2020 23:01

Kamala Harris will be an excellent VP.

Kljnmw3459 · 04/11/2020 23:02

@RedToothBrush I'd rather have trump than Bush. If those were the two options.

charlottemont · 04/11/2020 23:03

@Puzzledandpissedoff

only 61% of the ballots in Philadelphia (a very large, overwhelmingly blue city) have been counted

Associated Press are saying 85% now ... looks like somebody's woken 'em up!!

It's 85% in Pennsylvania as a whole, but still only 70% in Philadelphia county!! (at least according to the NY Times). Still a lot of votes to be counted in Philadelphia county, along with Delaware County and Montgomery County (where I grew up-- both blue suburbs of Philly). Biden should be able to run up the count there.

I am not sure that the Philadelphia ballots will be fully counted until Friday... It seems to be a rather slow process haha. Also keep an eye on Georgia - there is a decent chance that it could go blue. I wouldn't say it's likely, but if it does happen, it would signal a massive shift.

sergeilavrov · 04/11/2020 23:05

Michigan has finally been called by AP. Biden is now in need of a single state to declare victory (he needs 6 more EC votes), setting aside the inevitable recount demands and questions about the legitimacy of the voting process that will likely occur over the next few weeks and months. With protests now breaking out in some areas, including Detroit, threatening to disrupt counting, the US has a difficult time ahead. All eyes are on Nevada.

Yelloripe · 04/11/2020 23:10

WitchesSpelleas Thank you for taking the time to explain. Yes that does sound very similar. I think its likely that Biden will win now but I don't think he will be in long before Harris is put in using the new Palosi measures. Maybe a strong woman can unite us (we can but hope ar this point)

keeprocking · 04/11/2020 23:10

@pigsDOfly

Not yet, but even if he does, and I hope he does, Trump will take the result to the Supreme Court and try to get the result overturned.

Nothing's certain yet.

I would like to see him drag it out, if it's not sorted by Jan 20th then Nancy Pelosi becomes President, that would please him I think!
MissConductUS · 04/11/2020 23:11

@sergeilavrov Interesting you mention West Point. I'm quite near there and know several people who work there. They tell me that WP is in full lockdown due to covid and cadets are not being allowed off post for any reason. They're also getting ready for final exams, so perhaps you've been misinformed.

keeprocking · 04/11/2020 23:13

@Justanotherlurker

Lets be honest about this, even if Biden wins, its a lame duck presidency, it is a Macron v Le Pen on steriods, in 4 years time the cages will still exist, isolationist policies will still be in place and it will be a new type of mexican wall, with probably added 'intervention' included.

There is going to be many mental hoops that are going to be jumped through and in a couple of years another worse trump-esc person takes power because there is no self refelection.

I am looking forward to the next 4 years of threads posting twitter hottakes of anti Biden stuff.

American politics is broken, no one has really won today.

I can't believe that Biden is the best that the Dems can find to put up, after the 2016 debacle with Clinton they should have really found someone more suitable. It's been like a penalty shoot out with no goalie and they still managed to almost miss!

I'm 100% with you. Biden was certainly not my first choice (or my second choice, for that matter), but above all I know that he is decent, good man. One that is definitely not perfect, but I have hope that he can restore some semblance of decency to the office - and perhaps make it a little less embarrassing to have an American accent haha
Dongdingdong · 04/11/2020 23:14

No other news organisation has called Arizona yet.

@prh47bridge the Guardian is a news organisation and they called it about 12 hours ago. Biden has 100% won Arizona.

Kljnmw3459 · 04/11/2020 23:14

I feel like the more I try to follow the results, the less I understand anything about when these states are called. Seems random and premature.

Trust me, I feel you on that. I think his nomination is reflective of a few things. First, there is a bit of an ideological chasm within the Democratic Party -- people like Bernie are pulling it more to the left, but there is still a majority centrist viewpoint within the party. Secondly, I think fear of Trump in some ways motivated Biden's nomination. The Party knew that there were a lot of "never-Trumper" Republicans and independents, and needed to make sure they didn't alienate them with too far left policies. For example, a large portion of America is weirdly against a public healthcare system, and that has become a really big issue to keep voters happy.

In the end, I think Biden was just seen as the safest choice. I certainly think that the party could benefit from younger leadership, though.

charlottemont · 04/11/2020 23:22

I think it's hard to understand if you are less familiar with US demographics. You have to look at vote count per county - for example, if a city hasn't finished reporting, you can expect that marginal gain to be democratic. This year has also been complicated by mail in voting, which tends to skew overwhelmingly democratic - although not in every state.

Some do seem random and premature, though - particularly Arizona. I think that it is very likely that Biden wins, but Trump still has a very realistic path to victory.
