US Elections - Trump or Biden, who will win?

655 replies

JustSaying101 · 03/11/2020 19:55

Intrigued to see who everyone thinks will win the current US presidential elections? I wouldn't personally vote for Trump, but I think he will manage to win another term. What do you think?

YABU = Trump will win
YANBU = Biden will win

Sorry if this has already been covered. I've skimmed through.

I think in the UK we can hand in postal votes in person (instead of posting them)?

Can they do the same in America? And if so, would that affect the results, i.e. people who haven't already voted see the other side winning and decide to last minute vote?

wowfudge · 05/11/2020 19:50

Pretty sure you cannot vote in person, which that would be, once the polls have closed. The postal votes which come in after polling day have to franked on or before polling day is my understanding.

SheepandCow · 05/11/2020 20:09

Ah ok that makes sense. Thanks for explaining. I'm finding the US election quite confusing!

Blueberries0112 · 05/11/2020 20:13

My state have an emergency ballot for those who can't vote at their local polling place. It could be they have coronavirus and in quarantine. But it has to be done by Nov. 3rd .I wasn't sure how other states decided to handle it. But no doubt not in person

wowfudge · 05/11/2020 22:30

The vote in Georgia has narrowed further to 0.2%.

wowfudge · 05/11/2020 23:57

Urgh - Trump is rambling on again. Claims he heads the party of inclusion, amongst other things. Phoney polls, fake polls. He's being cheated apparently. Tremendous amount of litigation generally. He's alluding to Biden being corrupt because his own lead is being eroded in several places. He won't say he's losing though. Clearly not a word he wants to use.

He's so disingenuous, pretending he doesn't understand what's happening. An early lead gets overturned as more votes are counted, but he's lying through his teeth that it's fraud.

Youngatheart00 · 06/11/2020 00:00

Completely delusional ramblings!!

Someone on Twitter has compiled a thread of alleged voter impropriety:

Looks like fake news to me. Some people will believe anything they read online.

AngeloMysterioso · 06/11/2020 00:25

I can’t believe he’s tweeting articles from Breitbart. He’s utterly loathsome.

safariboot · 06/11/2020 01:38

Despite all Trump's bluster, it's still touch wood and cross fingers whatever side you want to win.

Georgia's insanely close. If it ends up being a decider expect a monumental legal bunfight there. (I mean, expect a legal bunfight anyway, but still). At which point we will see whether Trump's Supreme Court picks are corrupt. Nevada's close too, and I don't even know what Pennsylvania is doing.

wowfudge · 06/11/2020 06:54

CNN is showing them both on 49.4% in Georgia with 99% of the vote counted.

The way Trump is behaving I cannot see how he can continue as president for the rest of his term if Biden wins.

Dongdingdong · 06/11/2020 07:09

How can Georgia STILL not have declared? What are they doing FFS? I could have counted 60,000 ballot papers from my sofa in the last 24 hours and got the job done quicker.

MarshaBradyo · 06/11/2020 07:14

Do we still not know

Biden at 264 v 214 isn’t it very unlikely Trump will win

wowfudge · 06/11/2020 07:31

Postal votes - have to opened and checked. Then they get separated. Then scanned and counted. Or something like that - it's several steps. Plus valid votes are still arriving in the post, which is permitted by law. I would also hazard a guess that with the results so close there are extra checks taking place to ensure each stage of the process is accurate.

It's the first to 270 so it's still possible Trump could win. The results in the outstanding states however indicate it is unlikely now.
ethelredonagoodday · 06/11/2020 07:34

You'd think this all points to need for some overhaul of electoral process, to ensure a uniform approach. Unlikely I know!

MarshaBradyo · 06/11/2020 07:35

Wowfudge do you have to win the state to get all the electoral college numbers from that state? I’m guessing so?

MarshaBradyo · 06/11/2020 07:36

Or say you win 2 out of 3 in a state you get the two

Should google really but early

wowfudge · 06/11/2020 07:45

Yes - only two states pro rata the vote for the electoral college and it's not these. Maine and Nebraska I think.
MarshaBradyo · 06/11/2020 07:49

Thanks

I don't think that is necessary at all - the US is effectively a federation of countries each with their own laws. They all have strict processes and procedures for ensuring the election process is fair and proper. Unlike the UK you can register to vote right up to polling day. Many states allow postal votes posted on polling day to count, your vote doesn't have to arrive by polling day. All of these things are designed to ensure the maximum number of votes are valid and count.

The other thing to remember is that over 143 million Americans have voted in this election and turnout is the highest it's ever been. The results don't ever all come in the day after polling day, people forget that. Also individual states have different dates by which they must declare. The requirement is that they must declare before the date the electoral college votes must be cast in December. That's why a new president is only inaugurated in January.

In the last UK general election, turnout was 67%, around 47m people and it was a landslide for the Conservatives. This US election is on a knife edge with many, many more votes to count.

JustSaying101 · 06/11/2020 09:38

@rosie1959

By the time they have finished counting it will be time for another election
@rosie1959 My thoughts exactly! 😂

AP now showing Biden leading in Georgia though by less than 1000 votes.

WitchesSpelleas · 06/11/2020 09:46

CNN & Beeb reporting same.
