To think the shops in England won't re open before Xmas?

This morning woke up believing the stores would re open in December.
Went Xmas shopping today.
Lady who served me in pandora said she didn't think they would be re opening.
Also the lady in primark who served me said the same.
I've decided to finish my shopping this week for Christmas just incase.
Got a lot done today.
What do you think ?
Do you think they will stay shut now.

It's impossible to say really but my feeling is they probably won't open this side of Christmas. I don't think a 4 week lockdown will make enough of a difference, especially with schools being open.

FingersCrossedForAllOfUs · 02/11/2020 16:16

I think there will be uproar if shops and other places don’t open up before Christmas at least 2 weeks before. They have done this far too late though.
But I think it’s a good idea to do as much Christmas shopping before lockdown as possible.

SorrelBlackbeak · 02/11/2020 16:22

I think shops will open but bars and restaurants will not open before the new year. I really hope I'm wrong, but think the government will be desperate to avoid Christmas parties and NY parties so will keep everything closed.

Sunnydaysstillhere · 02/11/2020 16:25

I made dc do their lists last night and made a good start today.
As if I didn't possibly have enough to do dd gave me her list + a list from dcat!!

To think the shops in England won't re open before Xmas?
dingledongle · 02/11/2020 16:33

I went shopping today with my son and it was busy with lots of people doing Xmas shopping 🛍

I think shops may not open again as the number of infections will not go down if schools and other businesses remain open (even if it is legal )

I have several online orders outstanding at the moment (treliis/water butt) etc and I phoned them today to see if they will be delivered before lockdown and every one is staying open and running as usual.

All the time we mix it will spread.

I hope the shops re-open before Xmas but fear they may not ☹️

Excellent idea. All pop out and catch COVID. Make sure the numbers increase. Marvelous.

ginnybag · 02/11/2020 16:36

It will finish the high street if they don't, so I suspect they will if they at all can.

Calmandmeasured1 · 02/11/2020 16:39

I think shops will re-open on November 2nd when areas are placed into tiers and that, what tier you are in will dictate which types of shops open. We all need to do our bit.

in the areas where the rate has fallen consuderably. If people don't follow the rules and numbers of infections don't go fall drana

harrirrttu · 02/11/2020 16:40

People were ransacking primark pj section.
There was no social distancing at all.
It's a shame,I love Xmas shopping in December, having a mooch around the shops.

Sparklingbrook · 02/11/2020 16:40

I think they will reopen. I am not going out Christmas shopping the first week of November with a lockdown looming either.

Nothing like another thread to get the panic buyers going again!

harrirrttu · 02/11/2020 16:41

@Sunnydaysstillhere that's made me laugh ha ha

75% of the year's profit in my retail company comes in Christmas peak period. As a previous poster said, if stores can't trade in December the sector will collapse.

harrirrttu · 02/11/2020 16:42

@Sparklingbrook I don't think Christmas shopping is classed as panic buying
It's stuff you would be buying anyway just a bit earlier

OP posts:
MercyBooth · 02/11/2020 16:42

Me neither. Im not spending on Christmas until i know i can actually see family members.

Defenbaker · 02/11/2020 16:44

@BluebellsGreenbells That's a bit harsh Bluebells, the PP was just taking a sensible approach, getting Christmas shopping done in case shops remain closed in December - it's not like she was attending a massive rave or throwing a huge party.

IMO, if people wear masks and observe SD where possible I'm doubt the risk of shopping today would carry any more risk than shopping in December, when shops will probably be more crowded (if they're open).

Gertie75 · 02/11/2020 16:45

I think they'll open, Wales and Scotland are so I don't see why we'll be any different.
Christmas is such a huge event for retailers and I doubt any government would make them close in December.

Can threads like this not go in the dedicated Covid board?

IDontMindMarmite · 02/11/2020 16:45

And they will re open. Checked my crystal ball.

It is when people are doing it because of lockdown looming, and all cramming into the shops at the same time over 2 days! Panicking that they can't get that all important lavender gift set for their aunt or something. Saying the shops won't open this side of Christmas making them even worse!

Even if I wanted to start Christmas shopping now I would do it online.

We really need an AIBU Covid section don't we? The answer is generally yes you are BU.
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/11/2020 16:50

There are a lot of things that might not be 'essential' in the short term, but not indefinitely - or even in different contexts. Clothes, for example: you don't need lots of snazzy new party outfits, but you do need the basics if they wear out and, in the case of children, if they are outgrown. Toys are also essential for children, but I don't know if the big toy shops are being allowed to stay open, are they?

So many shops are just not going to exist any more come the new year - even some of the big chains.

Don't know about the assistant in Primark, but the lady in Pandora was definitely trying to get you to spend more money!

Er I think you might be overreacting a bit here bluebells. People are largely wearing masks and social distancing so what is the harm in Christmas shopping before lockdown just in case shops don’t open up after a month as planned? Do you think a mad rush s as far panic shopping after lockdown would be any different? 🙄
FingersCrossedForAllOfUs · 02/11/2020 16:55

Sorry, That’s meant to say ‘and’ in the last sentence, autocorrect fail.

Dustysilkflowers · 02/11/2020 17:00

They will open they will need the revenue from the bars and restaurants.
