This morning woke up believing the stores would re open in December.
Went Xmas shopping today.
Lady who served me in pandora said she didn't think they would be re opening.
Also the lady in primark who served me said the same.
I've decided to finish my shopping this week for Christmas just incase.
Got a lot done today.
What do you think ?
Do you think they will stay shut now.

No I don't believe they will and I've already told my DC's that they may be getting some money to spend after lockdown instead (luckily they are nearly 14 and 12 so they don't mind)
I firmly believe Boris knows already that Christmas and New year are going to be wiped out, that's why they've adopted the lockdown method of allowing uni and school, where some of the biggest rates of transmission stem from, so when at the end of November the numbers are still big, he can blame that and shut school's too.
Look, it is upsetting about Christmas, but I'd far rather get rid of this virus and enjoy it next year and other years with my mates and family all still here. It's bollocks, there is no other word for it, and yes the government could've done more.
It is what it is and I feel awful for shop workers and the hospitality sector

Sparklesocks · 02/11/2020 17:49

I don’t know. This year has taught me that we all know sweet FA about what’s to come and what will happen next.

However I do think extending lockdown into December will cause an uproar which the government will not want to deal with. They keep saying how important the economy and business is and they know that retail/hospitality makes an enormous chunk of its profit in December. People are already very tense and lockdown extension could cause those tensions to implode, especially after Boris insisted a few days ago that it wouldn’t be extended (not that he can be taken at his word).

CountessFrog · 02/11/2020 17:52

They’ll close the schools and open the shops.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/11/2020 17:52

Ok for those who can afford it. Really shit as usual for poorer people who are waiting for the Nov (and possibly Dec) pay days to buy for Christmas, and have no recourse to credit cards. As usual, poorer people worst hit.

Nailed it there. So many privileged people urging us all to stock up early, as if we all have money to pay for things months in advance and the only reason we haven't done it is because it simply hasn't occurred to us.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/11/2020 17:52

I think shops wkill trip in december to save the high street. Sime tourist places for the same reason... To allow them to save themselves. Simple fact is some businesses need December.

I wonder if Primark will start developing a website?

TicTacTwo · 02/11/2020 17:54

I think that they'll want to avoid furlough payments in December so need to open the shopping centres and high street stores before even more shops close and jobs are lost.

ramblingsonthego · 02/11/2020 17:57

This would cripple the high street for decades. The high street is already a dead man walking due to online shopping and to kill off trade for the busiest and most profitable time of the year for some not many will survive.

The government would not take this risk, I don't think. This would put millions on unemployment and leave us high streets with supermarkets and any businesses that have been able to trade through lockdown. Not going to happen.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/11/2020 17:57

It’s just Christmas . I hardly think its essential actually.

You could say the same thing about a whole lot of industries - weddings, restaurants, pubs, theme parks, holiday and tourism providers etc. etc. - but you'd see it very differently if your own business/livelihood depended on it, rather than just from the perspective of a consumer.

TicTacTwo · 02/11/2020 18:02

Just remembered that Click and Collect is allowed for non-essential retailers. I wonder if this is their attempt to keep the high street going?

PoloNeckKnickers · 02/11/2020 18:02

@Sunnydaysstillhere

I made dc do their lists last night and made a good start today. As if I didn't possibly have enough to do dd gave me her list + a list from dcat!!
I love that list for puss 😂
wheresmymojo · 02/11/2020 18:03

@52andblue

I went Christmas shopping today after I dropped the kids at School. I went to a charity shop where I bought a new tagged Next Xmas jumper for £3, and a fab huge glossy hardback coffee table type Prof Cox book on Space (rrp £50) for £1. I also bought a table runner, placemats and some Xmas napkins for £3. I donated the £3 change from my tenner. The Hospice shop and I were both very pleased.

I went to Morrisons for diesel and normal groceries and there was almost no loo roll, no paracetamol, not much hot chocolate, tea, coffee. People were buying pasta, canned tomatoes, rice etc.
Lots of pensioners buying whisky, fruit cake, potatoes and tiny chops.

Just the tiny chops?

I'm planning on average sized chops so thought I'd better check not really I'm veggie Grin

Can these scaremongering threads be quarantined on the coronavirus board where they belong?

gingerwhingerwife · 02/11/2020 18:08

I did three hours of Christmas shopping today. I'll be doing a fair bit on the Internet, but wanted to shop locally where I can and while I can rather than giving the lot to Amazon.

Sparklingbrook · 02/11/2020 18:08

@wanderings

Can these scaremongering threads be quarantined on the coronavirus board where they belong?
Or maybe a 'Covid Scaremongering' topic/ Grin
No91 · 02/11/2020 18:09

I predicted this back in March so started buying online and stashing when I could. When shops re opened did a bit more and was don’t by September.

BluebellsGreenbells · 02/11/2020 18:10

Can these scaremongering threads be quarantined on the coronavirus board where they belong?

You mean can people who think about the next steps go back in their box so those who have their head in the sand and carry on regardless?

MrsToothyBitch · 02/11/2020 18:14

I finished the tail end of my planned high street Christmas shopping today to be on the safe side, but I do hope they'll reopen.

MercyBooth · 02/11/2020 18:16

@MillieVanilla Christmas is important to those of us with elderly family members who already have non Covid health problems.

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll Agree with your posts.

EatTheHamTina · 02/11/2020 18:21

I thought click and collects could remain open? I'm planning on smyths still being able to click and collects!

EatTheHamTina · 02/11/2020 18:22

Otherwise people will end up with special buys from Aldi.. unless that's taped off too Grin

Sophoa · 02/11/2020 18:25

I think they’ll open for 2 weeks before Xmas until the end of the first week of Jan and then do another post Xmas lockdown to address the mixing over Xmas.

Zenithbear · 02/11/2020 18:33

Yes I think shop's will have to be allowed to re-open for December. Otherwise a lot of people will just give money and will spend it in the January sales just moving it along. I did most of my Christmas shopping last week and the week before at a variety of shops and they all had really good practices - handgel, wipes, limited people, plastic screens, masks etc.
I think it's really unfair on retail as they are taking the same precautions what most businesses who are allowed to stay open are. Some of our local shops are staying open late this week and have set up delivery services from now on.

Holothane · 02/11/2020 18:39

For 30 years or more people laughed with me about my early Christmas stuff, this year I’m so glad I’ve done everything except food stuff, waiting for dates and looking at cakes in a tin, if ordered end of November would they keep till Christmas plus marzipan fruits.

StCharlotte · 02/11/2020 18:51

Can you imagine if the shops are open in Wales and Scotland but not England?

Yeah, not happening.

SomewhereEast · 02/11/2020 18:52

I think they will, simply because keeping retail & hospitality closed in the run up to Christmas will basically annihilate a vast swathe of the economy and lead to hundreds of thousands of redundancies come January. The government would be insane to let that happen.
