For not making the bed

rosesareredxxx · 01/11/2020 22:31

I never make my bed and neither does hubby. Whoever gets out last just takes the cover off themselves, gets up and ready and on with the day. Are we tramps for doing this? Lol

Also does anyone else not make their bed?

I guess I figure no one comes into our bedroom and we are both too lazy to do it 😂

@Janegrey333

It’s amusing that people are trying to suggest anyone who actually makes the bed is not airing it! Is that your feeble attempt to make yourself feel better about your standards?!
This is hilarious from someone who describes the many non bed makers who have contributed to this thread as "slovenly".
hetanom · 02/11/2020 12:09

Studies show that unmade beds are factually cleaner than made ones, even if you air it before you make it. I can't believe so many mumsnetters are so gross that they actually make their bed.

Ninkanink · 02/11/2020 12:18

I make the bed because it makes me happy to see it made. If I didn’t care much about aesthetics I wouldn’t make it - I’d just fold the duvet back and straighten pillows so it’d look tidy. We routinely wash our bedding once a week, more if needed, so I’m not concerned about hygiene pros or cons of what I do or don’t do. There’s also no moral element to it as far as I’m concerned. I personally like order and I like things to look nice. But either approach is fine and I don’t see why it’s a big deal, nor why anyone would really care what’s happening in other people’s homes.

Janegrey333 · 02/11/2020 13:18

@Chicchicchicchiclana

You air it for a reasonable period of time, then you make it properly. 🙄

CloudyGladys · 02/11/2020 13:23

If you've never heard it, look up US Navy AdmiralWilliam McRaven's speech “If You Want to Change the World, Start Off by Making Your Bed”.

Frazzled13 · 02/11/2020 13:30

I used to make it straight away but then saw something in a magazine that said it's better to let the mattress air a bit,

Oh goody, finally an excuse!

safariboot · 02/11/2020 13:58

Nor me. What's the point?

With a duvet, yeah, I guess it takes two seconds,

With sheets and blankets (which I don't have at home), well I despise them being tucked in. If I'm in a hotel I have to untuck everything before I go to bed.

Mistymonday · 02/11/2020 14:10

Air it by pulling duvet back roughly and straighten pillows but who can be bothered making it every day. Seems like a waste of life. Likewise decorative cushions.

How? If I air it, I'm at work by the time I would make it. So it stays like that until evening. Maybe us slovenly tramps are all at work...
Heartofglass12345 · 02/11/2020 14:15

Neither of us make the bed. I
Pull the quilt back and fluff my pillows and put the sheet straight before I get back in at night. Who honestly cares? Literally no one else sees it or ever goes into our room. I only really go in there when I'm going to bed so it's forgotten about during the day!

Bluntness100 · 02/11/2020 14:23

We make it every morning and it’s changed every Friday .

I am now working from home. Easy.

Ninkanink · 02/11/2020 14:30

When we both were WOH we left the bed to air whilst we both were out and whoever got home first would make it. At that time we didn’t have a bedspread so it was just a matter of straightening pillows, pulling the duvet back over and resting the reading pillows on top. We both like the bedroom to look nice/tidy/restful/appealing when we’re getting into bed in the evening.

I also like to relax in the bedroom sometimes during the day if the mood strikes me, so that’s another reason why I will always make the bed at some point.

I suppose it depends what time you get up and when you need to leave for work. I've always had time in the morning to air bed and do a tidy up before leaving. The bed and room would air in the time that it takes me to get myself and ds breakfast, my own shower etc and ds dressed and ready to leave.

Yes it's lazy. It wouldn't take 20 seconds to plump the pillows and fluff up the duvet.
MrsTerryPratchett · 02/11/2020 14:48

And I've yet to have a good explanation of why things that no one sees, don't matter and make no difference HAVE to be done because of some strange idea that laziness is to to avoided at all costs.

Most of human endeavour and invention has been for laziness and comfort. The wheel, the car, washing machines, machetes, prams... thank you lazy people. Without them we'd be bashing washing against rocks and making our own fire.

Yes.
Pesimistic · 02/11/2020 14:51

I make my bed as soon as I'm out of it, it makes the room look nicer and also is nicer to get into a made bed, but I am pretty anal about my house and how its presented, even if I'm the only one seeing it

Ninkanink · 02/11/2020 14:55

Totally agree with this.

I know perfectly well how to have a good life, actually, and it doesn’t involve frenetic action for the sake of it. I spend as much of the one life I will have doing mostly those things that make me happy, contented and a more well-rounded, and therefore kinder, person.

I keep things tidy and quite clean - certainly not to the exacting standards of some, but I really don’t GAF about that - because I prefer them that way, not because it makes me a better person.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 02/11/2020 15:03

I personally like to make my bed every morning but that's just me, your bedroom preferences are none of my business (and not anyone else's either)!

Andante57 · 02/11/2020 15:06

You're also meant to air your privates but I don't think many people walk around going commando

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Drogonssmile · 02/11/2020 15:18

I make the bed whenever possible. It is depressing to get back from work to a pile of untidy duvet lumped on the bed but sometimes getting a 4 and 7 year old out at the same time as me in the morning proves too much and I have to just leave it. Do it about 80% of the time.

YonderTweek · 02/11/2020 15:32

I'm 35 and I've only just started making the bed. Grin I still don't manage some days but I like coming into the the bedroom and seeing it look all tidy. If I haven't made it in the morning I generally make it at some point in the evening because I enjoy getting into a made bed where the sheets aren't all tangled. I'm not super bothered about this and deep down I am a person who doesn't make their bed, but I'm enjoying this moment of feeling like an adult for as long as it lasts. Grin

(Although writing this from my unmade bed...)

Changethetoner · 02/11/2020 15:35

Since WFH I am often in and out of my bed during the day, as it is cosy and warmer (and we're too tight to put the heating on). So no, I don't usually make my bed.

jessstan1 · 03/11/2020 04:04

Mrs Terry Pratchett, I quite like the idea of bashing washing against rocks, I imagine it is quite therapeutic.
