Supermarkets and Discounts

Just wondered what's people's thoughts on a certain Supermarket rolling out 10% food shopping discounts to Teachers. Am I being unreasonable to think that they should have extended it to people who are no longer receiving 100% pay?

How is anyone going to prove they're not receiving 100% pay?

emilyfrost · 01/11/2020 14:58

Yep, YABVU. Discounts shouldn’t be based on a “but what about X people?” kind of basis.

You can’t discount to everyone, and each individual place has a choice of who they want to discount to.

NewYearmorestress · 01/11/2020 14:59

I'm guessing it's a extension to the discount for keyworkers, as they already do a 10% off for NHS staff.

NewYearmorestress · 01/11/2020 14:59

An extension..

Endoftether2000 · 01/11/2020 15:02

EmilyFrost completely agree but at this time where people are trying to keep the economy going, are the Teachers really losing out on anything? and good point shoxfordian I am not sure about that.

They can do what they like in a capitalist society. If you don't like it shop elsewhere, encourage them to include your profession, or become a teacher.

@Endoftether2000

Why does they need to be losing out in order to qualify for a discount?
ilovesooty · 01/11/2020 15:05

Not again. Take your custom somewhere else if you don't like it.

MrsJunglelow · 01/11/2020 15:51

I know people who work at this supermarket.
The amount of money being lost in food wastage, free deliveries due to no staff and people not getting their orders as a result and money just going missing with no explanation and the wasting of money in other areas is absolutely astounding!
No, they absolutely should not extend it to people not on 100% pay.
They shouldn’t have given it to teachers in the first place.
If the stores I know are reflective of the company nationwide, they will be going under soon.

rookiemere · 01/11/2020 15:57

I agree it's a free choice from the supermarkets or whatever shop has offered the discount, but I think it's a bit misplaced. Teachers are not badly paid and their jobs aren't in danger at the minute. You could say their jobs are dangerous, but why a 10% discount on their shopping would help with that, I'm not sure.

I find these discounts a bit hollow anyway. If anyone deserves a discount it's low paid care home workers but as they're not NHS I don't believe they get one.

Brighterthansunflowers · 01/11/2020 16:00

YABU

We had almost this exact thread yesterday, and had numerous versions in the spring when many companies were giving discounts to NHS staff.

Private businesses can give discounts to anyone they want as long as it’s not discriminatory.

Meepmeeep · 01/11/2020 16:02

Why should they? Also, where would it end? Companies can offer discount to whatever groups they like - don’t like it - shop elsewhere.

Bwlch · 01/11/2020 16:02

Am I being unreasonable to think that they should have extended it to people who are no longer receiving 100% pay?

My sister is no longer receiving 100% pay due to covid. She still earns quite a bit more than I do.

Who should get the discount?

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 01/11/2020 16:04

How petty to moan about this.

Teacher bashing again. So tedious.

TyneTeas · 01/11/2020 16:07

Here's yesterday's thread on this www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4065821-Morrisons-Discount-for-school-staff

amymel2016 · 01/11/2020 16:09

I hate this ‘but what about me’ culture. Can’t we just be happy that someone is getting a perk in this rubbish time.

Endoftether2000 · 01/11/2020 16:12

Apologies Tyne Teas did not see that from yesterday.

OP posts:
Endoftether2000 · 01/11/2020 16:13

Bwlch agreed maybe I should have put those recently made redundant

OP posts:
nicerbeing · 01/11/2020 16:15

What's the angst about a business giving someone nice to someone? Is the problem that it isn't you?

Endoftether2000 · 01/11/2020 16:16

Amymel2006 this is not about what about me. This is about morals. If it was what about me I would be asking (which I hasten to add I do not work in) what about the lovely people keeping the lights on, the heating going, the water running. NHS and Teachers all need these.

OP posts:
howtobe · 01/11/2020 16:17

My concern is that we’re starting to live in a society where you can pay less than other for items depending on your job Confused

As far as I know, teachers have been paid during this crisis. I work for the civil service and have worked right through this pandemic while home schooling my daughter and looking after a toddler.

My job was changed to take into account the job retention scheme and SEIS. I’ve not had a minute since March and it will be as busy as this for years to come dealing with the fall out.

No discounts for me 😂 I’ll just pay full price but then I’m ok with that because I’ve been paid fully.

Monsterjam · 01/11/2020 16:18

But it’s not really about which group they give money to is it, it’s a marketing ploy to increase good feeling towards them so more people shop there. I guess it makes sense to attract those who are still earning

BurningMam · 01/11/2020 16:18

Yeah, fuck the NHS, fuck teachers, fuck the police - people who aren't working, aren't at risk and sit at home all day should get more money. Stop being so bitter and jealous.

Monsterjam · 01/11/2020 16:18

Sorry, give money off to

CatsAndEyeliner · 01/11/2020 16:18

They obviously can’t do it for everyone, it wouldn’t make financial sense.

So @Endoftether2000 because they can’t do something nice for everyone they shouldn’t do a nice thing at all?
