Supermarkets and Discounts

Just wondered what's people's thoughts on a certain Supermarket rolling out 10% food shopping discounts to Teachers. Am I being unreasonable to think that they should have extended it to people who are no longer receiving 100% pay?

@howtobe

My concern is that we’re starting to live in a society where you can pay less than other for items depending on your job Confused

As far as I know, teachers have been paid during this crisis. I work for the civil service and have worked right through this pandemic while home schooling my daughter and looking after a toddler.

My job was changed to take into account the job retention scheme and SEIS. I’ve not had a minute since March and it will be as busy as this for years to come dealing with the fall out.

No discounts for me 😂 I’ll just pay full price but then I’m ok with that because I’ve been paid fully.

This has been the case for an incredibly long time. NHS discounts for years, army discounts for years, police discounts for years. This isn't something "we're starting to" do at all.

Considering the risks teachers are currently being exposed to, it’s well deserved.

Endoftether2000 · 01/11/2020 16:22

Catsandeyeliner cause they could, have you not noticed the increase in food bills?

It’s a business decision pure and simple. I’m an NHS worker and never shopped at this supermarket until they offered the discount (no real reason, just wasn’t my usual supermarket)
I now shop there every week as do most of my colleagues, so they have gained much more custom than the discount is costing them - makes good business sense to me.

howtobe · 01/11/2020 16:28

@BurningMam

I don’t think anyone is saying that and it’s a rather uninformed argument to storm in with.

Giving discounts to people who were fully paid and the majority of whom were at home during the first lockdown seems misplaced.

No one is telling them to get to fuck, just that it feels slightly inappropriate

howtobe · 01/11/2020 16:29

@BurningMam

Well we are starting because the teachers are now joining the NHS ranks...🤷🏻‍♀️

Gingerkittykat · 01/11/2020 16:33

I hate discounts to a group of workers who are well paid compared to a lot of people and have secure jobs.

How about a discount for people on UC struggling to do a weekly shop on a limited income.

ilovesooty · 01/11/2020 16:34

Oh it's about morals is it? Really?

rookiemere · 01/11/2020 16:37

Well exactly @Gingerkittykat - I just don't understand the logic of giving a discount to teachers who are reasonably well paid. It seems a bit of a slap in the face for those who are struggling financially at the minute.

We are not starting. As pp said NHS discounts were here gor so long. So were fireman. I am not sure about police ones so it wouldn't be considered bribery.
There is army discount too.

Companies discount for each other's staff often. Eg, outlet in train station will do x% discount for train station staff.

It's normal. What I don't like is that, to use some of your words, "we’re starting to live in a society where" people can't give anything to anyone without hearing "but what about x!". Envy isn't pretty...

rookiemere · 01/11/2020 16:40

Actually I do understand the logic. It's because they want the rest of us to have the warm fuzzies about their business and be prompted to shop there.

Many People genuinely believe that those on UC brought it on themselves so wouldn't condone subsidising them whereas teachers are clearly deemed as being much more worthy.

I'm not knocking teachers, I simply don't understand why they're getting a discount.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/11/2020 16:41

I like how suddenly nhs and teaching stuff are well paid when it comes to trying to justify why they shouldn't have a discount 😂

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 01/11/2020 16:41

My sister is a TA in a school for children with SEN. Some of those children will literally throw shit at you. Or wipe their snotty noses on you. You can't socially distance from them due to their needs. She worked throughout lockdown.

My brother works in an office. He was furloughed. Then worked from home for a while. Then did part time in the (very safe, only him in it) office. He has been very vocal that he saved more than he lost during furlough, due to lack of travel/ general work expenses.

Even when he was furloughed he was earning more than sister was.
I know who I think deserves the discount!

Sh05 · 01/11/2020 16:44

Not this again!

This.
This is not a caring decision made to try and do something nice, it’s a business decision.

This also.

All of the staff I know at this company are thoroughly miserable and treated absolutely appallingly.

I don’t know many at all who agree with the discount because at their stores at least, the amount of money being lost is so astronomical, quite honestly, they can’t afford it.
I would hope that it’s only the stores I know where this is the case and not nationwide.

PattyPan · 01/11/2020 17:11

Yabu but as a key worker who is neither NHS nor a teacher I was a tiny bit resentful that priority hours for supermarkets were just for NHS and not all key workers. Fortunately I have a delivery pass now because I certainly don’t have time to be going queuing at the supermarket!
