But the pubs will be shut so you can't get a lovely lunch whilst out

So it's going to be pack lunches again.

At least this time there won't be people complaining about people exercising in the Peak District like last time!

@JamSarnie

Haven't read the full thread so apologies if this has already been covered but for those frothing away at people saying they cannot travel for exercise and will be breaking the law you might actually want to READ the guidance.

[[https://www.gov.uk/guidance/new-national-restrictions-from-5-november]]

Have a look in the travel section before making up your own rules.

I was going to post the same thing. It's a shame people don't bother reading the government guidelines before coming up with their own version of 'the rules'.
LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 01/11/2020 16:51

@MaxNormal

I'll definitely be driving to go for walks, no way am I just doing the same dreary trudge that is accessible to me from my house. I'll not be breaking in laws by doing so.
Same here. It's perfectly permissible.

We drove to a riverside walk once a week and to a park on another day. Each a journey of 10 miles. I hope the NT gardens stay open.

It isn't people walking in the countryside spreading the virus. It's those socialising in pubs and the streets outside them. And older teenagers.

shinynewapple2020 · 01/11/2020 16:55

@tenlittlecygnets my guess is that the reason they said an individual can meet one person not from their household is so that there can still be the required distancing whilst you are walking along a path together . If there was more than two people total there probably wouldn't be the space for you to walk 2m apart . So it doesn't really matter if it's a different person you are meeting as you are 2m apart outdoors so unlikely to transmit infection . I'm only guessing but that's what makes sense to me .

IrmaFayLear · 01/11/2020 16:56

@ScribblingPixie - my ds discovered John Rogers on YouTube. He walks all around London and discovers the history of all sorts of overlooked places and bits of suburbia.

Orcus · 01/11/2020 16:56

People making things up and berating others on that basis is becoming a real problem on here. I found out on another thread that there are vulnerable MNers who have been frightened by the nonsense and avoided exercise or travel to support bubbles because of it: I had no idea this was happening until today. A couple of us have decided to take the initiative to report actual misinformation when we see it, because it's doing harm. I hope @MNHQ do something to address this issue.

Livelovebehappy · 01/11/2020 16:57

I’ve always visited places at the weekend to walk; may be countryside, or a park or along a river or canal, and whether or not that pleases the countryside dwellers doesn’t concern me at all. Should the rules change, then I will abide by the rules, but currently the rules allow me to travel for outside exercise, so I shan’t be bullied by small minded people into following rules made up by themselves. Smile

RegularHumanBartender · 01/11/2020 16:57

God are we back to this shit again. Idiots making up their own rules and expecting other people to follow their made up bullshit. Honestly, just give it a rest ffs.

IrmaFayLear · 01/11/2020 16:58

Just remembered a thread a while ago where an OP was screaming about virus spreaders on country walks... after she had just got back from a country walk Confused

IrmaFayLear · 01/11/2020 17:02

I agree, Orcus. A few weeks back someone posted that shielding was being reintroduced and they had had a letter. My hair stood on end, but after people demanded that she posted a screenshot of said letter it transpired it was untrue. Luckily MN took down the thread immediately, but there are still some unhinged people out there keen to spread worry and panic.

shinynewapple2020 · 01/11/2020 17:07

@shinynewapple2020

I thought we were being advised not to travel out of our areas so for me that would read that if I have countryside that's 5 miles away where I can walk that's fine but not to drive across the country .

We did a lot of country walks earlier in the summer but had eased off as other things had opened up. So yes we will be doing what we can to get out and if that's a walk with a flask that's what we'll be doing '

I'm correcting my own post here as reading the guidance posted there doesn't seem to be anything stating distanced you can travel to exercise .

And regarding the meeting of a random one other person yes I do get the point it makes sense not to meet a different person every day .

ScribblingPixie · 01/11/2020 17:08

Oh those look really good, @IrmaFayLear, thanks so much. I'll watch some tonight & make plans, brilliant.

NervousInYorkshire · 01/11/2020 17:11

I'm an ECV non driver in an urban area. How the chuff am i meant to even get to the countryside safely?

Totally agree. It's irresponsible on the part of the posters. Last time they almost all ended up going quiet when further clarification from the government pointed out their stance was wrong.

All that harm, for nothing.

WinterWalking · 01/11/2020 17:18

And yet again - clarification that driving short distances for exercise is permitted...

www.gov.uk/guidance/new-national-restrictions-from-5-november#travel

I suspect this will make a few posters go very quiet again....

NervousInYorkshire · 01/11/2020 17:19

I remember a fellow shielder on MN only realising that the guidance had either been misunderstood by them originally or had changed (I can't remember which) when shielding ended...

chomalungma · 01/11/2020 17:22

They have updated the guidelines.
Still a lot of 'shoulds'

You should avoid travelling in or out of your local area, and you should look to reduce the number of journeys you make. However you can and should still travel for a number of reasons, including:

travelling to work where this cannot be done from home
travelling to education and for caring responsibilities
hospital GP and other medical appointments or visits where you have had an accident or are concerned about your health
visiting venues that are open, including essential retail
exercise, if you need to make a short journey to do so

No one ever comes back to admit they were wrong. Boils my piss.
flaviaritt · 01/11/2020 17:49

People need to calm down. Of course we should be (and are, in England) allowed to take our own cars to a public spot, eat a sandwich and leave. FGS.

chomalungma · 01/11/2020 17:50

@AntiHop

It's still true that people can go for a walk in the countryside but they can't go to the pub though.

They might unfortunately find access to the countryside difficult though because of transport issues as you say.

Some people truly seem to want to remove any ounce of light and joy out of activities.
Looking for a way to stay sane and find some small amount of happiness within the rules, is not looking for loopholes.

@ScribblingPixie
How could I resist referencing the only IMPORTANT North-South divide Wink
Seriously though, I’m so sorry about your job - that must be very stressful. Weirdest silver lining ever = not being well enough to work means that I’ve not had the worry of that side of things during all this. I hope, in the nicest & good & best way, that you’ve less free time soon.

One of the Exhibitions I Was/Am Sad To Miss (Because Shielding) was the Museum of London Docklands Secret Rivers one. The Effra runs up through Norwood & Brixton to join the Thames (I think) - no prizes for guessing where the Peck is Grin

There is a really good blog called Running Past that beautifully details local history stuff in my corner of London as a series of runs/walks. I don’t think they’ve covered the stretcher fences (which I think are all this side of the river, which is a pity from pov of your walks & research) - ghost signs are all over the city though, & fascinating.

@Inkpaperstars - sorry, I meant to @ you as well but took so long writing the post as MN keeps falling over (& tbh my brain is doing something not dissimilar) that I’d only a vague niggle of there being Something Else I’d Meant To Say. I hope you can keep finding interesting new walks & that it stays dry when you need.

PhilSwagielka · 01/11/2020 17:54

I’ll be glad when it stops pissing it down and I can go on Pokemon Go hunts again.
