Travellers foodbank challenge.

Posting for traffic and suggestions.

We have started the fb challenge again this year as it's needed more than ever.
We challenge family members to buy an extra weeks worth of food and donate to food banks. Nobody is left out, we all have to rise to the challenge and want to, tbh.

I have posted on dozens of pages asking to remember to include san pro.
If anyone has suggestions that might be forgotten, I'd appreciate the heads up. Also, just to let the people in supermarkets and food banks aware, as this is usually done on such a big scale.

So far I have family in Leicester and Cheshire signing up. But will post other areas as I become aware.
Any suggestions will be very helpful.
Tia.

Laundry products and pet care, will look into the latter Thanks

For those saying must be minted, there are some of the elders who save a little out of their pension every week to be able to do it.

Thanks for suggestion to check the websites, I'll also remind people to do this.

I'd also include a few nice treats with necessities, sweets, chocolates, bubble bath etc. Appreciate not essential items, but much needed.

midgebabe · 30/10/2020 12:29

I don't know whether to laugh or cry

Are people suggesting that no one should donate to food banks because some people can't afford to?

Or should everyone do it, but no one ever speak of it? Like a guilty secret?

I mean the London marathon is a major event that raises money for all sorts of charity. Should that be banned because some people can't run or can't afford to donate! What about all those TV adverts?

People all the time ask people to remember charities that are close to their hearts. It's normal. They are not watching to see if you put your hand in your pocket.

Chanjer · 30/10/2020 12:30

No idea why OP needed to mention how much they are donating (a week’s groceries). It would have been more humble to say “we are planning to donate to a food bank and would like ideas on things that are often needed but not often donated “.
People are surprised by some of the reactions here but imagine if someone had posted “I plan to donate £50 a week to a charity. Which charity should I pick?”. It amounts to the same thing. People would be accusing the poster of stealth boasting how much they are donating under the guise of asking for help with picking a cause.

It's the challenge name

Frequently it's gonna be way more than 50 as op said traveller families can be large

Only if they are twats.

DameCelia · 30/10/2020 12:31

We'll done @Devilesko , what an amazing thing to do
The racism on this thread is astonishing.
@vanillandhoney no-one is challenging you to buy food. Travellers are challenging *each other". The op was asking for suggestions of what to donate.

Also think about getting some items from the free from ranges. I know they are more expensive but for those with allergies and conditions which mean they can’t have certain ingredients having to rely on a food bank must be especially difficult

SoupDragon · 30/10/2020 12:31

@notdawn

This is all very unsavoury.
Which bit?
Devilesko · 30/10/2020 12:31

Not at all, there may be people on here who volunteer in food banks or work in supermarkets and would like the tip off it's happening in their area.
It's usually Tesco/ Asda, if their town has a big enough Lidl or Aldi we may use these.

But yes, I must admit to being proud of the community as a whole, and it is nice to hear people say good things rather than some of the racism we experience.
My post wasn't meant for stealth at all, I'm quite poor presently.

"It would have been more humble to say “we are planning to donate to a food bank"

Oh yeah cause a Facebook challenge is all about being humble

"But it's not just an average £1 a week, is it? Most people on here are parents and their food shops will be considerably more than £55 per week"

🙈 you are allowed to engage your brain and donate an average food shop despite your own actual shop costing more

Shocking isn't it . I wonder how many of these people had 'be kind or 'BLM' on their social media, then come on here and bash the OP
Ohtherewearethen · 30/10/2020 12:32

I am disgusted with the blatant racism from some of the posters on here. See the word 'traveller' and immediately think they must be on the take. It wasn't hard to understand at all, people just started rage typing. You've just really shown yourselves up.
OP, regarding advent calendars, I remember reading somewhere that they should be avoided in favour of selection boxes as they are counting down to an event that might not happen for some families.
Things like wetwipes and antibac wipes could be useful and maybe some hot chocolate and marshmallows for a treat.

Gingerkittykat · 30/10/2020 12:32

People are horrible, as soon as you mention travellers you get a pile on even if it is travellers doing something positive for their community.

I saw a few of the videos last year and thought it was fantastic.

I've seen specific appeals for meat and veg and UHT milk since that is what they most often run out of. It is worth phoning your local food back though to see if they need anything in particular.

I don’t give a shiny shit how much someone can donate to charity, any charity. I’m just pleased people can afford it and do donate.

Stealth boast would be the last thought on my mind first being good for you, thank you!

Because that’s the “Traveller Challenge” - the terms of the challenge is to donate a week’s worth.

Other people’s defensive reactions are mostly based in prejudice.

Well, OP has managed to flush out a whole nest of racists and goady fuckers.

I hope they are banned.

@myhobbyisouting

"Bloody hell, an extra week’s worth is a huge ask and beyond most of us. Your family must be minted. I’ll just continue with my £5 a week challenge."

@WitchFindersAreEverywhere so you'll donate £260 to the foodbank over the year but because the challenge involves donating a weekly shop ONCE it's a huge ask? Confused

Yes. That’s how budgeting works in my house.
Unescorted · 30/10/2020 12:34

@Devilesko It is a wonderful, kind and generous thing to do, especially as it is more difficult for the Traveller community to access the necessary referrals required to use foodbanks. I applaud you and your family.

Back to your question - it depends on the foodbank. Depending on the community it serves. The FB stores I manage is over run with pasta, pasta sauce, soup, baked beans and petfood- to the point we swap them with other foodbanks. This is because the Trussell Trust has them on their "wanted" list. We are a small independent foodbank in a rural area (with lots of old but wealthy pensioners) and we already had loads of the things that were packed in the vulnerable / shielding boxes, but could really do with red jam, fruit and things that can be cooked in a microwave.

Just make sure that what ever it is can be stored on the shelf - that way if it isn't needed immediately it can be used later in the year.

TBF, the “T” word always gets this response, no matter the context
myhobbyisouting · 30/10/2020 12:34

@notdawn

Wtf are you going on about? Do you have any suggestions of items the foodbank might need that are sometimes overlooked??
