Travellers foodbank challenge.

Posting for traffic and suggestions.

We have started the fb challenge again this year as it's needed more than ever.
We challenge family members to buy an extra weeks worth of food and donate to food banks. Nobody is left out, we all have to rise to the challenge and want to, tbh.

I have posted on dozens of pages asking to remember to include san pro.
If anyone has suggestions that might be forgotten, I'd appreciate the heads up. Also, just to let the people in supermarkets and food banks aware, as this is usually done on such a big scale.

So far I have family in Leicester and Cheshire signing up. But will post other areas as I become aware.
Any suggestions will be very helpful.
Tia.

It's a lovely idea!

I'd email the foodbank and ask them what they need or check their website, our local one has a list with what is needed and what they already have enough of.

PP mentioned nappies, they might need baby wipes too.

Some disgusting comments on this thread.

MynephewR · 30/10/2020 12:18

Good grief what is wrong with people today Hmm OP is not demanding that everyone donates a weeks worth of shopping ffs, it's a challenge that they do within the traveller community. I think it's fantastic!

ShalomToYouJackie · 30/10/2020 12:18

What a lovely thing to do, I would add toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, sanitary products, shampoo and conditioner. I'd definitely donate to a food bank if I could afford it

Whammyyammy · 30/10/2020 12:19

Well done OP, great to see the traveller community supporting, and in a big way, a weeks shop is a lot of money.

Just a shame all the anti travellers have came on to bash you.

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/10/2020 12:19

OP isn't asking anyone to donate anything. This is something the Travelling community have been doing for the last couple of years. They challenge EACH OTHER, like the ice bucket challenge. The trolley loads are donated to local foodbanks, for EVERYONE.

Def cunt one indeed.

MJMG2015 · 30/10/2020 12:19

@MsStillwell

Shame the op didn’t make her post clearer.

Yes, funny that.

What do you mean by that?
Devilesko · 30/10/2020 12:20

Hello again, just a few points.

Yes, it's for the wider community, and no it's not a boast, we ave huge families and consider ourselves one community, so someone in Wales could challenge a cousin in Crewe, etc.
If someone can't afford it, they say so and the family all chip in so that you can afford it.
There's no getting out of it, even if you are poor.
My sibs have bailed me out this year as I've lost my work.

Thank you so much for those suggesting items I'm posting on my fb page as we speak. Thanks

Shame the op didn’t make her post clearer.
It's perfectly clear.
NoSquirrels · 30/10/2020 12:21

Wow, load of judgy poorly informed responses here. “Boasting”, FFS. And what part of “challenge” do you all not understand - it’s supposed to be challenging to provide that much extra, doesn’t mean they’re minted and can afford it every month. Wow.

OP, smaller packets of stuff like sugar etc - even though counterintuitive cos they cost more per gram but food banks can’t split bigger packs.

Our food bank is always desperate for tinned meat - and not always pork (e.g. Spam, hot dogs) because of dietary restrictions. So tinned chicken etc very welcome.

And yes, as well as san pro they often ask for men’s toiletries - deodorant, shower gel, shave stuff etc.

Milkshake7489 · 30/10/2020 12:21

It's unbelievable how many people are openly racist towards travellers Hmm

Lots of people fundraise in their communities (Christians, Muslims, schools, girl guides, football teams....)

Of course not everyone can afford to donate a full weeks shop. The last time I checked, charity was optional so give what you can and stop demonising people who are able and/or willing to give more than you.

OP, what you're doing is amazing Flowers please don't be put off by racist idiots.

this is great - I think that laundry products, cleaning products and shampoos, shaving stuff are always welcome. I think it's worth popping things in that are useful for people who don't have an oven or even a cooker - instant porridge and cereal bars.

devuskums · 30/10/2020 12:22

@Devilesko can't understand what all the confusion is about. Sounds like a fantastic thing to do. San pro is so often overlooked so fab idea to spread the word. What about pet food/flea and worming treatments? Are these allowed in the food banks?

SoupDragon · 30/10/2020 12:22

Laundry products were mentioned on the list DD was sent for their school collection.

The website(s) for your local banks will say what they are short of this month as they can all differ.

vanillandhoney · 30/10/2020 12:23

@myhobbyisouting

An average weekly shop for 2 adults in the UK costs £55.

All of you that say you couldn't afford to give a weeks shop, can you really not spare an average £1 a week to the foodbank?

Or are you just exaggerating because the OP mentioned travellers?

But it's not just an average £1 a week, is it? Most people on here are parents and their food shops will be considerably more than £55 per week. Also, this is about donating a whole weeks' worth in one go, and lots of families simply don't have that available without putting themselves into debt.

Millions of families already live out of their overdrafts each month because what they have coming in, simply doesn't cover the necessities that need to go out. Food poverty is a real thing - people really don't need to be made to feel bad because they don't have spare cash at the end of the week.

Snugglepumpkin · 30/10/2020 12:24

I always make sure to donate Peanut butter as it is high in calories & nice.
Also other things that can be made into sandwiches easily like tins of meat paste, tuna, sandwich spread etc.. as they can be used by people with no fridge/freezer/cooker etc... so can be given out to everyone.

Cup a soups particularly in the winter as it's something hot that can be made with just a kettle.

I donate weekly & the shelf stable things I get asked for the most apart from the things above are
Childrens cereal, sugar, tea, coffee, tinned fruit, uht milk, pasta sauces (people seem to donate a lot of pasta but often nothing to go with it)
I also put in those 1litre cartons of orange juice.

Good luck in your challenge.

liverbird10 · 30/10/2020 12:24

Good on you, OP! Smile

GazingAndGrazing · 30/10/2020 12:24

Some awful comments from some who clearly can’t read properly!

I remember this challenge from last year and the whole community donated huge amounts to those in need.

I just wanted to add pet food, poo bags etc - so many people fall into poverty with their beloved family pets.

NoraEphronsBoltintheNeck · 30/10/2020 12:25

@RunBackwards

Travellers?

You are running a campaign that you believe might impact on supermarkets and food banks to the extent they need to know in advance? Is that even responsible?

We're doing the reverse advent calendar.

How does the reverse advent calendar work please?
