Travellers foodbank challenge.

Devilesko · 30/10/2020 11:40

Posting for traffic and suggestions.

We have started the fb challenge again this year as it's needed more than ever.
We challenge family members to buy an extra weeks worth of food and donate to food banks. Nobody is left out, we all have to rise to the challenge and want to, tbh.

I have posted on dozens of pages asking to remember to include san pro.
If anyone has suggestions that might be forgotten, I'd appreciate the heads up. Also, just to let the people in supermarkets and food banks aware, as this is usually done on such a big scale.

So far I have family in Leicester and Cheshire signing up. But will post other areas as I become aware.
Any suggestions will be very helpful.
Tia.

@notdawn

This is all very unsavoury.
Biscuit

OP maybe ask MN to amend your first post with a link to the challenge.

midgebabe · 30/10/2020 12:35

@BoreOfWhabylon

Well, OP has managed to flush out a whole nest of racists and goady fuckers.

I hope they are banned.

Is anyone reporting?
GrumpyHoonMain · 30/10/2020 12:35

I just want to say we’re running a similar scheme for large families in Leicestershire and the support from both the local traveller and Islamic communities has been fantastic. People really should go beyond stereotypes.

Juniperandrage · 30/10/2020 12:36

Holy crap. Who even cares if its boasting or whatever? The end result is that struggling people are getting fed.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 30/10/2020 12:36

Hardly anyone in the UK at the moment can afford to buy an extra week's worth of food to give away. People are finding it hard to feed their own family.
I put a bag full of surplus food on Olio the other day, it was requested within minutes by loads of people, collected within the hour, people are struggling, they can't afford to do what you're asking op.

GroundAlmonds · 30/10/2020 12:36

@notdawn Are you hearing voices? Or just randomly taking the opportunity to be defamatory?

SoupDragon · 30/10/2020 12:36

Is anyone reporting?

I have but the more people who report the better.

Thatusernamewastaken · 30/10/2020 12:36

Would have thought a large amount of Mumsnetters could afford an extra week of shopping from the various threads on how much people have left at the end of the month. Great work OP

Gingerkittykat · 30/10/2020 12:37

I saw the suggestion of face masks somewhere since people at rock bottom can't afford them, I've bought some really cheap ones on Amazon before which were great but came from China so a long delivery time.

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/10/2020 12:37

@midgebabe

Is anyone reporting?

Oh yes!

She isn’t asking any of us to do it though.

Her posts are pretty clear about the nature of the challenge and how it works within her community.

Their challenge means families will be able to eat this Christmas and yet people are still looking for ways to criticise.

listsandbudgets · 30/10/2020 12:38

I have a 5 week rotation

week 1 tinned fish or meat
week 2 some kind of dried food that can be made with boiling water - e.g smash, cuppa soup, porridge cups, pot noodles
week 3 toiletries / nappies / san pro
week 4 tinned fruit and tinned veg
week 5 biscuits or flapjack or the like

Its dried food week this week. Our local food bank does kettle packs - sadly there are people with no access to cooking utensils other than a kettle :(

Every couple of months I also sling in something like a tin opener, wooden spoon, cheap pan or mug (I assume if people need to cook they need something to cook in / with / eat out of)

"How does the reverse advent calendar work please?"

You basically buy a weekly shop made up of 24 items on the foodbank reverse advent calendar and donate it.

But as most people can't afford a weekly shop you had better not or you'll be accused of stealth boasting.

GroundAlmonds · 30/10/2020 12:39

Look at the deletions. What do you think?

ChaChaCha2012 · 30/10/2020 12:42

Our food bank is asking for Christmas chocolates and biscuits. It might seem frivolous, but this year people need a bit of joy more than ever. Also the groups that normally provide Christmas gifts for people who are struggling are not going to be able to operate this year.

This is a fantastic initiative OP, thank you for publicising it.

Carishina · 30/10/2020 12:42

It’s a really nice thing you’re doing OP. Could you include a few treats? Especially with Christmas coming up I’m sure people would appreciate some advent calendars, hot chocolate, that kind of thing.

Well no.. because everyone here is destitute. Also makes 100k, obvs. But most are destitute. Though most make 100k.

MN is a land of lies, delusions and people with zero reading comprehension.

ChaChaCha2012 · 30/10/2020 12:44

Also, I know I'm way ahead here, but things will be even worse in January and February, with Christmas jobs gone and less of the giving goodwill that we see in the festive period. Please keep giving then, if you're able to.

Saucery · 30/10/2020 12:44

Those prepackaged wraps with a long date on them are also asked for sometimes. Good alternative to bread.

WhoWants2Know · 30/10/2020 12:44

The post was clear to me, as it's something that's been well publicised for years.

But as usual, some posters can't see the word traveller without hoiking their knickers up so far as to be irretrievable.

Morrison's seem to be in good contact with the foodbanks and pre-wrap packs of shopping that are needed so they don't just end up with beans.

icedaisy · 30/10/2020 12:46

Completely agree with @raaaasss . There's lots of things I don't know about when people post, I either Google or don't comment.

There are some disgusting comments here.

Well done OP, lovely challenge.

Lots of good things mentioned if you can weed them out.

What about plasters? Basic packs. Just thinking along the toiletries line.

Mixed herbs.

I usually forget the things from shop that go far but I don't use every week.
