My mum used to buy it weekly. I haven't read one since my teens, but I had the urge this week to do some of the puzzles. I had forgotten all about the sensational, misleading headlines.

This week's cover headline: "Mum wanted a baby so she took my TWIN GIRLS. Only ONE came home ALIVE" (Capital words all TAB).

What do you think actually happened?

Anyone got any other 'gripping' headlines with a very different story?

I love TAB!! I remember a few years back every week there was a story about a 60 something woman being conned by a much younger Turkish/Moroccan/Egyptian husband.

As to the headline, the babies are probably goldfish or something lol

Iamthewombat · 29/10/2020 11:43

Is the other one still alive but living at her grandmother’s house?

Iamthewombat · 29/10/2020 11:44

My all time favourite TaB anti-hero is the bloke who ran the kebab can and romanced his lady customers. At least two of them sold their stories for £250.

They both knew it was wrong, but it felt so right!

ReallySpicyCurry · 29/10/2020 11:46

The heroes are always carpet fitters with twinkly eyes and cheeky chappie smiles.

"In time, I fell pregnant"

PolarBearStrength · 29/10/2020 11:49

They are always really weirdly written. Lots of commas so the syntax doesn’t really make sense? I assume it’s a word count thing.

I’m gunna guess that her mum offered to be her surrogate, and miscarried one...

GrapevineFires · 29/10/2020 11:51

@PolarBearStrength: Very close - it was a stranger (so no idea why the use of 'mum' in the title) and only one survived. A bit of a custody battle but story-teller won in the end.

I remember that. They ran them for years. Then it turned out that one particular Turkish man had scammed a couple of TAB readers.

I must say I'm disappointed with the current brainwaves. They used to be much funnier.

Ah so she meant A mum and not her mum!

My cousin gets TAB and about a hundred similar magazines, which I wade through at her house. The trouble is I then panic I have all the weird medical problems, eg “Doctors found a pineapple growing in my stomach!!”

I always marvel at people meeting some (dodgy) bloke and “we decided to have a baby” three minutes later - or at least “Dodgy Dave moved in the next day”. Have people not read TAB? Don’t they suspect that he surely must be a paedophile/drug addict/murderer/all of those ?!

I’m also loving this picture of the women who wrote on her wedding dress to send to husbands bit on the side. I love that’s she’s just submitted a standard photo and written over it in biro. Grin

I have actually read this (,due to unforseen circumstances I currently have limited internet access and patchy TV access,so got Dh to buy me a couple of magazines) I won't spoil it but can concur the headline bears no resemblance to the story!

The love stories about the cheeky chappy carpet fitter with the twinkly eyes will always say have the storyteller giggling with her mum/best friend/sister/dog about "he's so handsome!" then further down the page you see a photograph a photograph of the cheeky chappy and he looks like a thumb.

x2boys · 29/10/2020 12:04

They always meet their " Fellas" on a rare night out down the pub and can't believe their luck that this Handsome guy would be interested in them and then they post a picture of the toothless wonder with a face like a bag of spanners 🙄

x2boys · 29/10/2020 12:05

Ha cross post @Gancanny😂

I quit my job as a bingo teller so Dave worked all hours, providing for me and our triplets, LelliKelli, 4, and Rekjavik, 2.5. So I wasn't suspicious when he said he had to work that Saturday.

"I'll get that carpet slotted right in, good and hard" he said "Keep some of that takeaway for me, eh love"

I suspected nothing as I plated up his chicken balls and texted my best friend Val, 59, inviting her round for some cheeky fizz and a giggle. But Val didn't reply. That wasn't like her, I wondered

Casschops · 29/10/2020 12:09

I particularly like the wronged persons facial expression peering into the camera with a blank face while pointing at some object linked to the event.....top journalism.

Elderflower14 · 29/10/2020 12:09

I bought TAB to read on the train and was surprised at the baby story too....
A work colleague sold her story a few years ago when she broke her back...

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 29/10/2020 12:10

I remember every single story had to include the phrase "You see" at least once.

"I gazed into the mirror and carefully applied lipstick. Then I sighed sadly and did it again. I was a conjoined twin, you see. I thought no man would ever want me. That was before I met Mike. He was a carpet fitter with a twinkle in his eye and a cheeky chappie smile. Within a week, I had a pineapple growing in my stomach."

I’m going to buy one today sounds like they are still as awesomely shite as they were !

bruffin · 29/10/2020 12:14

Did she donate eggs and only one was successful?

BumBurnerBum · 29/10/2020 12:15

Love this thread!
I remember one headline was 'I snogged a swan!' But I didn't read it so I cannot confirm whether actual swan-snogging occurred.
