Requesting Michael Jackson at gym?

Bellabow · 28/10/2020 13:04

Our PT asks if we have any song requests before the session.

A couple of times Michael Jackson sings have been requested.

AIBU in thinking (despite a few good tunes) it's inappropriate to listen to his music nowadays?

You'd think so. I still hear him on the radio which I think is weird. You certainly don't hear Rolf Harris played!

joystir59 · 28/10/2020 13:08

Wouldn't feel comfortable listening to MJ tbh. Unless it was his childhood stuff when he was innocent.

QuestionableMouse · 28/10/2020 13:09

Rolf Harris was found guilty and his music was shit anyway.

Hiccupiscal · 28/10/2020 13:09

He was never convicted.
The latest allegations came out after hes dead. Conveniently, he cannot defend himself.
Innocent until proven guilty, and his guilt has never been proven (i am certainly not saying he is innocent, as his accusers have made good cases, but hes also never, ever been proven guilty)

I hear his music and enjoy it, as do my DC, his contribution to music really was outstanding.

Lougle · 28/10/2020 13:09

I don't have an issue with his songs.

Lockheart · 28/10/2020 13:09

Think whatever you like, it won't stop people listening to it.

GirlCrush · 28/10/2020 13:11

Hold on so his earlier stuff would be ok as he was innocent then bit later stuff not ok as he was no longer innocent?

So on what date exactly does this switch? What dates did his conviction give??

FuriousCheekyFucker · 28/10/2020 13:11

Jimmy Savile was never convicted either, but you wouldn't see the BBC putting reruns of Jim'll Fixit on this Christmas.
supercee · 28/10/2020 13:12

@FuriousCheekyFucker Literally what I was about to say.

Bellabow · 28/10/2020 13:13

@Hiccupiscal I don't not enjoy his music.

I'm surprised that anyone would give airplay to it nowadays

Bellabow · 28/10/2020 13:14

I thought it was in public record that he'd paid people off?

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 28/10/2020 13:19

I'm surprised when it happens, too. I tend to switch off the radio if his songs are played.

BluebellsGreenbells · 28/10/2020 13:21

I also switch the radio off or over. It’s wrong.

Terrace58 · 28/10/2020 13:22

Not everyone has difficulty separating the art from the artist.

BluebellsGreenbells · 28/10/2020 13:24

Why? His estate is still profiting from airplay. Do you not see that as wrong?

What of her been a child murderer instead? He’s given a lot of children a life sentence for his own gains. He’s proceeds should’ve been handed over to victims.

TeamLucille · 28/10/2020 13:24

I wouldn't ask him to babysit if he was still alive, no issue with his songs.

It makes no difference to a dead man anyway.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 28/10/2020 13:24

I think it just still makes me angry that all the evidence pointed to money being more important than justice.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 28/10/2020 13:25

Have you stopped watching any films produced by Miramax and petitioned Netflix to stop showing them? Likewise with Johnny Depp films?

Do you take care to avoid anything with Michale Fassbender in?

Do you complain to networks that show reruns of Gossip Girl?

If you have DC at school, have you checked to make sure that they don't watch the Polanski version of Macbeth?

I mean, either you want to take a stand about art produced by men who have been convicted or accused of offences, and are surprised that anyone would give it airplay, or you don't and you're not. But just picking one of them to focus on seems rather bizarre?

TheyreComingToGetYouBarbara · 28/10/2020 13:25

Practically speaking, there's not much you can do about it, apart from asking that his music not be played at the gym, which will probably cause some awkwardness. Either they'll have to tell you that they won't do that or they'll have to refuse someone's music requests.

You could find another gym, but you might encounter the same problem there, too.

GirlCrush · 28/10/2020 13:27

So if, for example, a researcher discovered a cure/vaccine for covid .... then they later died and it came out they had abused children a few years earlier.... what would we do? No longer use the vaccine?

Iamaamazing · 28/10/2020 13:28

He wasn't convicted and it seemed like the people who were paid off were done so because it was obviously giving him a bad rep..( I don't know whether he did it or not I hope to God not).
But either way, none of know for sure if he did or didn't do anything wrong.

GirlCrush · 28/10/2020 13:28

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross no of course not but is it coincidence those examples are of white people?

Iamaamazing · 28/10/2020 13:29

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross
What did Michael fassbender do?? Shock I love his movies.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 28/10/2020 13:30

Do you want to remove all artwork, sculpture, writing, film, music but anyone ever accused of a crime?
Or are you just picking and choosing based on which things are still modern, widely publicised and easy to shout about?

Sally872 · 28/10/2020 13:35

I enjoy his music and as he is dead and not profiting from me listening to it I wouldn't switch the radio off if it comes on.
