To ask what on Earth wales are doing?

I don’t live in Wales but I’ve heard that they’re having a “firebreak” and shops cannot sell non essential items.

AIBU to think that that is just a step too far and completely over the top? Ok fair enough, tell people to stay at home but surely if someone needs to go shopping for essentials they can buy non essentials whilst they’re in a specific shop.

@Mamimawr yay to joining yes Cymru too! We really do need an Annibyniaeth thread 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

TrufflyPig · 28/10/2020 13:54

@Allthestarsarecloser I was planning on starting one inviting people to share their stories of how they came to support the cause. It wasn’t always the case for me and I would be interested in hearing what became the turning point for others. Which area/forum would be best to start it in?

Allthestarsarecloser · 28/10/2020 14:07

@TrufflyPig not sure of the best place but love the idea! I’m in - is there an area of talk that it would best fit? Aibu gets the most traffic I guess! I’ve gone from thinking independence was a crazy idea to being a fully paid up member in less than 6 months! Now i find it hard to see any other path for wales to be honest!

Genevieva · 28/10/2020 14:14

The Welsh government is making itself look foolish and dictatorial for no real benefit. Anyone who had been to the shops before this firebreak will tell you that they were almost empty anyway, so the risks of catching Covid were minimal. By trying to dictate what is and is not essential they have inevitably fallen into this farcical situation of having to produce a list. Meanwhile Amazon are doing very nicely thank you, so it does nothing to support non-food retailers. Totally unnecessary and unlikely to have any real impact. The lack of scrutiny and process over this decision to remove civil liberties has made me conclude that devolution was a bad idea. I am not in Wales but I have family there, and in Scotland too.

EveLe · 28/10/2020 14:37

I’m in Wales and I fully support the lockdown. You only need to look at today’s numbers, and Dr Hepburn’s video about NHH to know why it’s necessary! I’m glad the Government is doing something now rather than waiting for things to get even worse!

And if you haven’t been in Welsh shops, don’t comment that they were almost empty before lockdown - they were most definitely not empty where I am! I went Thursday to get DD wellies for forest school, and the shops were rammed!

It may be that every one was rushing to get things before lockdown/half term started, but the week before I queued for 15 minutes just to get into B&M - the Blackwood store had a large queue outside waiting to go in - it was so busy they were having to restrict entry to one in one out, and that was 10 days before lockdown! Last time I saw that was in April.

TrufflyPig · 28/10/2020 15:10

@Allthestarsarecloser it’s done! In AIBU

AGoatAteIt · 28/10/2020 15:15

I’m just glad that Wales can decide on their own steps to take and aren’t in a position where it’s down to Boris and his band of stupid useless bastards decide what to do next, all the time flip flopping all over the place like dying fish.

Time will tell if the firebreak lockdown works here. We won’t know until 2 weeks after it’s finished apparently.

Here if any of the new Yes Cymru supporters want to contribute:

Due to the local lockdowns I have only been able to go to supermarkets for weeks as all the shops I usually go to are out of county. I travel over 3 county lines for work but was unable to stop to even do food purchases. However I am able to mingle with 500+ pupils and 40+ staff daily up to last week. This is what I can't get my head around. Me browsing the meagre clothes aisles in Sainsbury's won't make a difference. However I will abide by rules even if I don't like it.
I have had 8 deliveries this week as this is the week I usually start my Christmas shopping. Due to the way Hermes delivered some parcels in the last few weeks I decided to get all my purchases delivered this week whilst I am home. There is only one independent shop where I live so my spending habits will make no difference to my town's economy.

It's funny how the overwhelming majority of Welsh posters support the firebreak, but it always someone with a family member or friend here has difficulty accepting it.
Allthestarsarecloser · 28/10/2020 16:20

Oh, well there we go, wonder what on earth wales are doing? nation.cymru/news/switzerland-and-germany-point-to-wales-firebreak-lockdown-as-an-example-to-follow/

TrufflyPig · 28/10/2020 16:23

@Allthestarsarecloser Yes! That’s awesome.

RajaGemini · 28/10/2020 16:26

I would support it in England if we were given a definite end date that was adhered to.
The problem is that back in March it kept getting extended and ended up being 3 months instead of 3 weeks.

Allthestarsarecloser · 28/10/2020 16:37

24,000 new cases & 310 deaths in England today. Seems Wales not looking so silly after all eh?

10questions · 28/10/2020 17:14

I support the firebreak because I would rather a short sharp two weeks lockdown (painful though it is) every few months than to carry on with cases rising and then a full lockdown later for a longer period of time.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/10/2020 17:50

What interests me is - do all the people in England sneering at us genuinely think England is doing better?

I mean, do they look at the death toll, the Track and Trace fiasco, MPs voting to let poor kids starve, the fact that not only the Daily Fail but The Spectator (!!) have criticised Johnson, Dominic Cummings.... the list goes on and on... they look at all that and then go, "Hur hur, a Tesco in Wales cordoned off the tampons, fucking shambles, LOL!"

(Don't get me wrong, I do feel sorry for them, especially if that's the only way they can feel better about themselves Grin)

pinkearedcow · 28/10/2020 18:31

I am in South Wales and am a bit scared. I just bought some non essential Halloween tealights from M and S. I was sweating when I got to the till, but they went through safely along with my two pumpkins. Now I'm scared that Drakeford is going to send the cops round.

The whole thing has has been blown out of all sensible proportion. I support what is being done and think Drakeford is doing the right thing (maybe not the non-essentials stuff, but in the firebreak in general).

I am very glad to be in Wales right now.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/10/2020 19:32

@pinkearedcow if you think that's living live in a knife-edge....I had to use my tin opener yesterday Shock

Would you bloody believe it, it worked fine so we had to eat the chickpeas.

Dear God, you took a risk. At least it worked out fine this time.

pinkearedcow · 28/10/2020 19:37

Apart from having to eat the chickpeas...

OwlBeThere · 28/10/2020 19:43

@Genevieva the shops were decidedly not empty pre-firebreak. They are far emptier now. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Genevieva · 28/10/2020 20:12

@ballsdeep it’s funny how my own family and friends in Wales feel very differently about it and think it very unfair to have the whole of Wales in lockdown for a problem in a few hotspots.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 28/10/2020 20:15

@Genevieva bet none of them are desperate to move to England though! Grin

It’s not just a problem in a few hotspots though. It’s climbing everywhere. Ceredigion, which has been the least effective has 52 cases per 100k at the moment - not so long ago 20 was the threshold for banning travel to/from a country.

cardibach · 28/10/2020 20:21

Least affected not least effective!
