To ask what on Earth wales are doing?

I don’t live in Wales but I’ve heard that they’re having a “firebreak” and shops cannot sell non essential items.

AIBU to think that that is just a step too far and completely over the top? Ok fair enough, tell people to stay at home but surely if someone needs to go shopping for essentials they can buy non essentials whilst they’re in a specific shop.

@FlyingFlamingo

Here’s the link for the firebreak evidence, it’s all there for anyone questioning why WG have taken this step
Reading that, they reckon if they get a good result R will equal 0.9 for 17 days.

You can also see that in their model it doesn't prevent any deaths. It simply delays them..

Also in their model they expect a lower peak than the first wave, even with no firebreak.

Mamimawr · 27/10/2020 22:43

I've joined Yes Cymru this week too. I've had enough. Why wouldn't we be able to run our own country? Everybody else in the world manages it.

The biggest fear I have is what happens to Wales once Scotland is independant.

thosetalesofunexpected · 27/10/2020 23:11

Hi Op I live in south wales, even tho this circuit break lockdown is only until 9 November, I don't understand what difference it will make, lockdown like this only suppress the virus for a very limited short term, then once it is lifted lockdown naturally their will a rise increase of virus cases again as people go about their usaul day to day living again, the only kind of Lockdown that will obviously make obvious significant difference longer time is the kind of lockdown we had in march which would obviously drag business to their knees,no one wants that.
Also gov idea of what is classed as non essentials is pretty quirky out there stuff such as pots and pans an all types of kitchen ware and even cutlery, how farcical, we obviously can not have pantomimes this year, but we can can rely on gov to step alternative for pantomime season coming up they are like farcical.
Macdonald's Junk crap is not essential not good for people health, still drive thrus still open thru
Clothes are essential items does not make sense just like the idea of people being allowed to travel to certain places, but not everybody will do sensible quarantine when come back as there are certain people who are thought less /selfish and pubs and social clubs being open in previous lockdown, still can be in same building place as strangers and when some people get bit tiddly drunk social distance tends to fly out window and yet you can not see a family member from a different household, what a carry on circus/pantomine no wonder some people are thinking what a liberty !!

AuntieFesterAdams · 27/10/2020 23:12

I am shocked how people not in the situation are viewing the lockdown of 14 days as the end of times.

In metro Melbourne (bit like greater London area) we have been in lockdown 111 days (yes over a hundred) and somehow we have coped. supermarkets here do not sell much beyond food and certainly not clothes, homewares, garden stuff etc.
It has been bloody hard, people are angry, but that's because the initial 6 weeks became almost 4 months.

so a 2 week firebreak in Wales sounds good- not too long but long enough to hopefully impact the spread.

Btw we now have had 0/0/2 cases over the last 3 days in a population of over 5m.

MadameBlobby · 27/10/2020 23:14

I don’t live in wales either but I hope that fool Drakeford gets his jotters at the next election.

Whammyyammy · 27/10/2020 23:15

Feel sorry for Welsh shop owners, as Mr Amazon watches on rubbing his hands.....

MadameBlobby · 27/10/2020 23:15

You are more trusting than I would be if you believe it’s only going to be 17 days. We were fed similar shite about a “reset” in Scotland and it’s now going on indefinitely.

snowspider · 27/10/2020 23:16

the firebreak is not expected to kill the virus, but to buy more time and health service capacity by spreading the load (and maybe getting people to understand how to mitigate effects by adopting new behaviour)

thosetalesofunexpected · 27/10/2020 23:16

Oops I ment travelling certain places abroad in previous lockdown I get the sense uk gov and welsh gov making these decisions on the hoofhoof etc so to speak.

Mamimawr · 27/10/2020 23:20

This lockdown will only be 17 days. The government here tell us the truth and confidence levels in the government are much higher than in England.

They have already told us that they are considering another short lockdown in January. If this one works I'll be happy to stay at home for another couple of weeks. I'll stock up on toasters Hmm

thosetalesofunexpected · 27/10/2020 23:20

I don't think somehow it this lockdown will be only until 9 Nov I think it will go on for longer that its obviously like a work in progress and saying its for only for a very limited time makes it sound better to general public there will be a review short break an then mini circuit lockdown on a regular basis bound to be

snowspider · 27/10/2020 23:23

I have no problem and indeed anticipate a follow on to this lockdown. Measures adapting to circumstances.

MadameBlobby · 27/10/2020 23:24

The government here tell us the truth

Sure they do.

I’m not in England so can’t comment on confidence levels there.

JamRolyPolyAnyone · 27/10/2020 23:26

The only people who seem to take issue with what Wales are doing are the people who don’t live in Wales.

Welsh people understand the need for a Fire Breaker. We don’t get our ‘facts’ from Facebook. No sympathy is needed. We are fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mydogmylife · 27/10/2020 23:26

@MadameBlobby

I don’t live in wales either but I hope that fool Drakeford gets his jotters at the next election.
Why? It surely doesn't affect you one way or the other if you don't live in Wales?
idontknowaboutmortgages · 27/10/2020 23:29

Rumours are France is about to go into national lockdown. So other countries seem to think lockdowns will help.

MadameBlobby · 27/10/2020 23:29

@Mydogmylife the result of the US elections doesn’t affect us here as we don’t live there but a lot of people still want Trump to lose.I like
It when incompetent politicians get their comeuppance at the hand of the electorate.

lionobserving · 27/10/2020 23:35

@Whenismumhome Op I don't understand why you're getting so much heat for this..

We're in Wales and in my experience, people think it's bizarre. We understand how it's not fair to smaller shops if supermarkets can go on selling, but the truth is that those shops are closed (so not getting revenue) either way. It makes no difference to their bottom line whether or not I pick up a dvd or a book while I'm doing my weekly shop.

Those are little things that make lockdown a bit easier; I wouldn't be going out specifically for those bits but while I'm in the supermarket, nipping down an aisle for a board game or puzzle or something really makes a big difference.

I understand it's only just over 2 weeks, but it still feels quite bleak at the moment. OP's point, from my perspective and appreciating other people's experience is different, is valid. Some of us are struggling with this.

Mydogmylife · 27/10/2020 23:43

Fair enough , but who is president in the USA potentially affects us all in the uk ( in all the devolved nations) , whereas Mark Drakefords decisions on lockdown in Wales hardly impact folk living in other parts of the U.K.

IamaBluebird · 28/10/2020 00:02

We've been in local lock down for weeks here in South Wales. The exit plan that we were told was being worked on has become a 17 day circuit break.
Who knows what's planned then, the circuit break ends and back into lock down we go.

CounsellorTroi · 28/10/2020 00:05

All the local lockdown meant was that you couldn't leave your local authority area and no one could enter it. Shops and businesses were open as usual.

Orkneys · 28/10/2020 00:06

The Welsh don't like the English OP. I wouldn't worry about them. It does look stupid tho everything covered up Grin

sarahjaneg · 28/10/2020 00:36

Any Welsh on here will not ( clearly by the responses!) Take your comment in the way it was intended. They will prefer to compare themselves to England ( pointless) and point out what they think they're doing better!
I do relate and hope wholeheartedly that England do not follow suit- mainly because I feel its very narrow minded for one person to decide what is essential to another!

GlummyMcGlummerson · 28/10/2020 01:02

God so many of these comments are totally pathetic. Whining because the OP offered her sympathy. Over sensitive much? Jeez l, listen to yourselves.

You weren't patronising OP and the few on this thread don't speak on behalf of all of Wales - my DB lives in Rhonda and is pretty horrified that aisles are taped off.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 28/10/2020 01:03

@RajaGemini

How many people actually believe it's 'just' 2 weeks though ? Wasn't it 'just' 3 weeks back in March ?
Yes, this is what worries me, the I first deadline is extended and then they pretend there isn't a deadline and there's no end in sight
