To be disgusted with Qatars assault on these women?

I'm honestly shocked at how these poor women have been treated and my heart breaks for them. How on earth did anyone think that this was ok? No one should be forced to have an examination that they did not consent too. There is no excuse for this behaviour.

There will be no such government because we depend on their oil and gas.

But that’s just your ignorant opinion. Go poll the Qataris and come back and report to us Gilbert

GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:26

Jesus Christ, the ignorance on this thread. Look it up on Wiki. It’s a country.

Oh my fkg .....

Cassilis · 26/10/2020 15:26

@SerendipityJane

Your words, not mine. Maybe I should report your post as racist myself ? Let's see whose posts get taken down, shall we ?

Is that a threat? Knock yourself out. 🤷‍♀️

GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:27

Go poll the Qataris and come back and report to us

I can't because it's an undemocratic, tribal, Islamic state.

And yes, it's just my opinion. Bet you haven't lived there though.

So don’t make assumptions unless you have EVIDENCE. Basic concept.

P.s. it’s a country.

Incidentally i'd be very interested to see what would happen if a country took 12 women from a fundamentalist Islamic country off a plane and forced intimate examinations in them in an attempt to find the mother of an abandoned newborn.

I think you’d have to be very naive to believe that this kind of thing doesn’t happen, even without reason, especially in certain countries others would presume safe.

There’s a lot of hatred in this world.

Friendsoftheearth · 26/10/2020 15:32

gilbert It isn't just the oil though, yes we can definitely take some responsibility for ourselves in terms of green energy etc. However the real drive won't be oil - but tourism.

We could do with educating the west about what really happens there, see if they are so keen on that beach holiday once they understand the horrors of certain ME countries that claim to be moderate.
Most western tourists would recoil in horror if they even understood how the hotel laundry is done, or who has suffered to ensure the breakfast room service is just so.

Much of the tourism has been built on the exploitation of overseas workers, and for those that are making excuses for Qatar - the assault of innocent women that night is now a huge global stain on their reputation , a repugnant horrific incident that has erased in a stroke twenty years of PR remodelling and rebranding to modernise and welcome tourism.

SaskiaRembrandt · 26/10/2020 15:33

*A crime was committed.
A baby was left (to die) in a toilet.
Using cctv/passenger lists they narrowed down the suspects to a few women.
They then searched the suspects, perfectly legally under that country’s laws.

Whether it was right or wrong, heavy handed, unnecessary etc - it was legal and not sexual assault.*

No, it was still sexual assault. All it means it in some countries sexual assault is state sanctioned. The same as in some countries, torture is state sanctioned, it's still torture.

And they didn't 'narrow down the suspects'. They took female passengers (including some who weren't women) off planes en masse and subjected many of them to sexual assault at gun point.

You still haven't realised why I'm just responding with amusement and utter exasperation at you repeatedly doing the online equivalent of screaming "it's a country! It's a country, look at Wikipedia, you're so ignorant! Etc. etc.

There's no point in engaging with someone like you.

Why are you refusing to explain why it’s not a country then instead of screaming it’s not a country?

I don’t think you’re amused, I think you’re seething.

British Travel Advice for Qatar:

Although crime levels are low, female visitors should take extra care when travelling alone at night.

Thats it! You should go to the British Embassy if you are sexually assaulted, that is very comforting. What will the BE do? Nothing apart from book you a ticket out of the country.

This advice needs updating urgently now. It should be made clear that travellers are at risk even in transit.

Absolutely.

There has been a huge drive for tourism of every type (sun holidays, sports, conferences etc) with Qatar following Dubai's lead.

I suppose it's about diversifying income, and the awareness that fossil fuels will eventually run out. Plus prestige etc.

And yes, while some people are aware of the human rights issues : many are not (or don't care).

Satc actually gave it a huge boost with the second (?) film, I think towie has featured the ME, there are dozens of supposedly pc celebs and actors who endorse the airlines etc. People do need to wake up.

Some will simply not care however.

GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:43

Sorry just to be clear I meant Dubai not Qatar re satc, towie etc

aModernClassic · 26/10/2020 15:45

@Chocaholic9

Almost as horrifying as the sexual assaults by the Qatari government is the women on here defending them
This.
aModernClassic · 26/10/2020 15:46

@notacooldad

I really hope they don't find the mother!
Me too. That poor women.
GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:46

In wrong, it's actually Abu Dhabi!

Friendsoftheearth · 26/10/2020 15:50

It should become an embarrassment to visit countries like this far from having endorsements of celebrities.
I have travelled in the area extensively, and I agree that things are shocking - especially at ground level.

If there was any effort to improve human rights, women's rights etc we might feel more inclined to support emerging countries like this, but honestly it is medieval and has such a long way to go. The situation at the airport is only scratching the surface, the real suffering is happening day in and day out, and is not being reported at all. Total radio silence.

PicsInRed · 26/10/2020 15:51

@GilbertMarkham

Incidentally i'd be very interested to see what would happen if a country took 12 women from a fundamentalist Islamic country off a plane and forced intimate examinations in them in an attempt to find the mother of an abandoned newborn.

Given they don't want strangers to see their female relatives' faces.bo

Good point. Embassies would be sacked and cities burned.

Our governments' reactions have also disgusted me. It's state sanctioned rape of citizens travelling on the protection of our state issued passports. "Do not travel for any reason" warnings should be issued and diplomatic relations suspended.

GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:54

Yeah, the lady who gave an interview said she was shaken awake on the plane, ordered out of the plane, taken to the ambulances and then pushed/sent away again when they saw she had silver hair and was older (presumed too old to be pregnant).

She initially thought it was covid related.

PicsInRed · 26/10/2020 15:55

This. It's a monumental change in the existing situation re: safety of female visitors when women are so unsafe in Qatar good God, poor Qatari women that foreign citizens cannot so much as TRANSIT an airport without mass, violent, state ordered sexual assault at gunpoint.

PicsInRed · 26/10/2020 15:56

Why are Sky News still advertising Qatar airways? Disgraceful.

Massive concerts on the beaches at Abu Dhabi with a whole array of stars highlighting how cool and hip Abu Dhabi now is - meanwhile Caitlin McNamara - the events organiser for the Hay festival is smuggled out of the country after being sexually assaulted by the Sheikh at the very same time.

The sheer disgusting hypocrisy - how is anyone now accepting work there given what has happened there?

How was the Hay Festival allowed to carry on despite this happening to such a senior member of their team????

What does this tell you about how Hay and others view the safety and security of women when the continue to work with countries like this?

I was utterly furious that Hay did not immediately pull the plug on the festival and show Abu Dhabi that this kind of assault on women will never be tolerated.

If it can happen to Caitlin and to those Australian women, it can happen to anyone including our very young daughters.
