To be disgusted with Qatars assault on these women?

I'm honestly shocked at how these poor women have been treated and my heart breaks for them. How on earth did anyone think that this was ok? No one should be forced to have an examination that they did not consent too. There is no excuse for this behaviour.

@Friendsoftheearth

Vote with your feet if you don't agree with the way Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Saudi etc treat women and employees. They are banking on the return of tourism after covid, you can express your displeasure by choosing not to go there ever again, choose a place that cares about women and equality.
I agree and it amazes me that people go to Dubai etc and are surprised when something homophobic or sexist happens to them. It's unacceptable and tragic for them of course, but people need to know about the places they're going to. I even read one case where a guy told the police that he was gay and unsurprisingly he was arrested for that.

The issue is that quite often these countries are stopovers and it's difficult and much more expensive to avoid them. I've had to stopover in Dubai and Qatar even though I'd rather have not.

@Gunpowder

My first thought was Handmaid’s Tale too. Horrific.
Hmm, I clicked hoping this would be 100 per center. Sadly not. Plenty of women on this thread would be queuing up to be an Aunt Lydia it seems.

@SkedaddIe I’m so sorry you went through this Flowers

What happened in Qatar was truly awful and nobody should ever have to go through that.

I agree that people also don’t really have a clue how common it is for abuse/assault to be carried out by people in positions of power in this country too.

Dyrne · 26/10/2020 14:53

@SkedaddIe that is awful and I’m truly sorry that you had to experience that.

I hope you realise that just because we are discussing this specific incident; it doesn’t mean that we don’t care about incidents happening in the UK. It’s just that this specific thread is about something else.

Posters are likely snippy at you because others without your experiences sometimes bring “whataboutery” onto threads like this, as it ends up derailing the thread in having to acknowledge every single other instance of sexual assault; rather than actually discussing the matter at hand. Then nothing gets done. Which is what a lot of people want.

Yes to all of this.

GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:02

Much better off voting in a UK government that isn't in hock to these places to start with.

There will be no such government because we depend on their oil and gas.

Not until we develop alternative sources of energy to meet our needs.

You'd be better to get your home running on renewables, sign up to green energy tariffs, lobby etc.

Noone would be within 1000 miles of those dustbowls if they didn't hold vast amounts of energy resources. Nor would they be able to buy anything they want.

Not using their airlines or their stopover airports would be a plus I suppose.

GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:06

Incidentally i'd be very interested to see what would happen if a country took 12 women from a fundamentalist Islamic country off a plane and forced intimate examinations in them in an attempt to find the mother of an abandoned newborn.

Given they don't want strangers to see their female relatives' faces.bo

Cassilis · 26/10/2020 15:07

This is terrible and I hope the women get justice but can we stop the racist othering of an entire country due to the actions of a few?

Your title is horrible OP.

GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:07

*Nor would they be able to buy anything they want.

Including the next world cup, our premier League football stadiums, our prime real estate etc. Etc.

Cassilis · 26/10/2020 15:08

@FlatScreenTV01

Vile, disgusting creepy weirdos.
And more racism.
GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:10

the racist othering of an entire country due to the actions of a few?

It's an Islamic state.

Oh and there is a wide spread, apparently female led campaign in Qatar and beyond related to clothing worn by visitors during the coming world cup ... It's called "Reflect your respect" and had diagrams outlining what clothing should cover.

The irony.

grassisjeweled · 26/10/2020 15:13

'Reflect your respect' by boycotting Qatar.

A simplistic argument, but imagine if 12 men had been anally searched against their will? Can you imagine the outcry?

I looked again and still can't see any racism.

What race is being attacked here ?

What is that supposed to mean? It’s still a country! Go look on Wiki and don’t be so ignorant.

Do you truly believe a poll of Qataris about their laws around unmarried mother's (to arrest and punish) and the means used to find them/investigate them would result in a majority vote against?

Because I've lived there and I'll be honest; I don't think it would. As above, they are an Islamic state.

If you live there or even if you pass through there, you have to be aware that there is the possibility that rules, laws, practices etc that we would consider to violate human rights might affect you.

MissEliza · 26/10/2020 15:17

Crack on defending the abuse of women. I can't believe the comments I'm reading here. Then again, my dh is from a ME country (he's a very liberal guy who is very respectful of women) and the things I heard women defending was astonishing. I could never bring my dd up there.

A country full of brown Muslims. You’re nowhere near as clever as you think you are 🙄

What the actual fuck are you on about? Confused
GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:20

You’re nowhere near as clever as you think you are 🙄

I think that's our line to you.

And don't refer people to Wikipedia FFS. It's a user submitted, unedited/unofficial resource.

I don't think you should be calling people ignorant or telling people to go and educate themselves, try doing it yourself first.

Jesus Christ, the ignorance on this thread. Look it up on Wiki. It’s a country.

What about the BBC? Hmm

GilbertMarkham · 26/10/2020 15:24

What the actual fuck are you on about?

It's in response to your comment about the "racism" and othering of a country bars on the actions of a few.

It's not complicated at all.

You're so caught up in your "racist!!!!!" virtue signalling detail that you've lost track of the subject of the thread and even your own arguments.

From my experience, I don't believe the majority in that state would be robustly opposed to the actions of their representatives; could i put that any more simply?

Your words, not mine. Maybe I should report your post as racist myself ? Let's see whose posts get taken down, shall we ?
