am I or Dh being unreasonable about internal doors not fully closed

I'm prepared to be told I am so here goes.

We have long pile carpets so doors don't "swing" as such. I tend to just push a door and then walk away, To be honest, it doesn't bother me and its an effort to remember as the first 20 years of my life were specifically spent leaving internal doors open so the cats and dogs didn't start howling at closed doors.

"DH" has a thing about doors being made to be shut. The one that drives him nuts is the one to the laundry cupboard. I put laundry in the basket and just push it behind me - and its always slightly ajar. This for some reason gives him the rage.

He's now threatening to take the door off the hinges if I don't learn to close it because there's no point in having it. Except it is closed its just off the latch.

So,

AIBU - I should make the effort to close the door even though its not something I actually think or bother about

AINBU - its a bloody door

I can't imagine opening a cupboard, putting something in and just leaving it open. That would drive me mad too. And I assume he's asked nicely lots of times before resorting to taking the door off its hinges? If my dp asked me to do something so easily achieved, that was important to him, I'd just do it.

Smallsteps88 · 25/10/2020 18:22

I can’t stand the sight of doors “almost” closed. Either open them fully or close them fully. But almost closed drives me mad Grin I’m with your DH.

RunBackwards · 25/10/2020 18:22

DS used to hate a door ajar when he was tiny. My mum had a kitchen cabinet that didn't shut and the first thing he did when he arrived there was to go and close the door, every time. He's normal now, at 19yo though Grin

Can DH explain what it is he doesn't like. I am always closing doors here, now DS has grown out if it becuase of the draught.

Doors that don't close properly/easily would drive me mad. Why doesn't he fix them as it bothers him so much?

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 25/10/2020 18:23

If it's got a bloody great gap around it then it'll let all the heat out, what a waste of money, the heat itself, the environment etc. Put door closers on the doors so they close themselves.

MyPersona · 25/10/2020 18:23

OMG how do people live? Kitchen cupboards left open, the FRIDGE !!!!

EmeraldShamrock · 25/10/2020 18:25

My DH leaves doors, drawers and cupboards open. But his worst offence is leaving the bloody FRIDGE door wide open. WTF?
I am the same it wasn't like this as a DC. Last week I was having a bad week it looked like a poltergeist had a visit every door and drawer was open in the kitchen.
I do wonder if it's dyspraxia.
I do try I'd had sticky notes inside the cupboard door reminding me to close them. Thankfully DP doesn't mind
He just closes them.

yelyah22 · 25/10/2020 18:25

I'm with your husband I'm afraid - room doors don't bother me, but it's a cupboard!

And to the PP who isn't bothered about kitchen doors being open... I don't even know what to say, it'd be like living with a poltergeist! Hahaha

reginaphalangeeee · 25/10/2020 18:25

That would annoy me too! I think it looks really lazy not closing a cupboard door. Doors to rooms being open doesn’t bother me, but cupboards should be closed.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/10/2020 18:26

It's a door to a cupboard, not the door to a room. Shut the chuffing door!

yelyah22 · 25/10/2020 18:27

Hahah crossposted with Emerald on the poltergeist thing... funnily enough I'm dyspraxic and I do many many things that drive my OH mad as a result, but kitchen cupboard doors is one even my brain has to handle haha :)

yearinyearout · 25/10/2020 18:27

YABU. I can't stand doors slightly ajar! I'm with your DH on this, just shut the bloody door.

vanillandhoney · 25/10/2020 18:27

This is the kind of thing that would drive me mad Grin

Just shave off some of the bottom of the doors, then surely they'll shut normally?

Bargebill19 · 25/10/2020 18:27

I have found that you only leave doors open until the day you
A) walk into the things... kitchen cupboard doors usually.
B) have to pay the electric and food bills ..... usually the fridge door.
C) have to pay for hearing bills ..... any door then gets shut unless you have cats or dogs, then external doors get shut and internal doors left open.

Bargebill19 · 25/10/2020 18:28

Heating not hearing.

Mamagotskills · 25/10/2020 18:28

I was ready to say YANBU, but it’s essentially a cupboard. Room doors in our house are open unless we specifically want them shut. The utility room and linen cupboard always properly closed. You’re being lazy. You could however have the door planed to minimise the effort

Imworthit · 25/10/2020 18:28

@MrsGrindah

Oh God . My DH leaves doors, drawers and cupboards open. But his worst offence is leaving the bloody FRIDGE door wide open. WTF?!
Hanging offense. The fridge wtf!

At first I was gonna say ditch the controlling bastard but an outward opening door would get on my nerves too.

BubblyBarbara · 25/10/2020 18:28

Funnily enough it’s only the laundry door - the rest of the doors he doesn’t mind.

Bit of a drip feed Hmm The laundry cupboard is a cupboard and not a room so of course you shut it.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/10/2020 18:29

I’d like to change my vote! You’re being totally unreasonable!

She is, massively! So i urge you to change your vote (you just click on the other option). Thatll learn her.

RunBackwards · 25/10/2020 18:29

DH empties the dishwasher in the mornings while I'm in the shower. Everyday I come down to an empty dishwasher but every kitchen cupboard door and the dishwasher still open. I bite my tongue but it's not easy!

MrsBeltane · 25/10/2020 18:29

I grew up in a house where my father was obsessed with door closing. He was always cold and made us run round the house closing doors every day.
I only close the doors if it's really cold. I love my wide open doors!

stackemhigh · 25/10/2020 18:31

He sounds like a nitpicking twat! My husband is like this about the dining room but only when the heating is on so the heat doesn’t escape.

I’m sure he does stuff that’s annoying, reel him off a list and it may shut him up!

TartanLassie · 25/10/2020 18:32

@TobblyBobbly
Why do you not shut the kitchen cupboard doors!!!

Why for the love of god why????

My son does this .... it drives me NUTS!! Can you tell ;)

Imworthit · 25/10/2020 18:33

If this is his one gripe just close the bloody door. If he's like this about alot of things different story.

goldenharvest · 25/10/2020 18:34

It takes no effort to close a door. I would suggest you suggest to DH that he shaves a small amount off the bottom of the doors so they close easily. If he won't then say he can suck it up then.

skankingpiglet · 25/10/2020 18:37

Pay a carpenter to trim the bottom of the door and fit a perko so the door closes itself. I'm a carpenter and would charge £50 for this (inc the closer). A bargain for marital harmony!
