Things MN have recommended on threads that you bought but turned out to be crap?

I'll start.

Shark vacuum cleaner.
I should have got another Miele. The Shark is just another average sucker upper.

A Dualit toaster.
After years of cheap toasters that starts off great but soon end up toasting one side more than the other, I listened to the years of recommendations on MN and spend £140 on an effing Dualit toaster just for it to do exactly what allllllll the other toasters do. The only difference is, is that it looks a tiny bit better and as though I have stupid money to throw at ridiculous items like toasters. Never again.

Anyone else?

What other things are always recommended by other Mumsnetters that actually turn out to be a bit shit?

Elizabeth Arden 8hr cream

Oh yes. I bought some on a whim and it’s bloody awful - far too heavy and greasy. I have no idea what it’s actually useful for.

AllPlayedOut · 24/10/2020 22:49

My Henry was the worst vacuum cleaner I've ever had. The suction was merely average and the bloody hose kept popping off and it was a fucker to get back on.

FrenchBoule · 24/10/2020 22:49

Henry. He sucks(not).

Went back to Dyson,not the fiddly ones that battery dies after 2 minutes on turbo but before they put a cap on anything over 900W.
Can’t remember which one is it. Awkward bastard to manoeuvre (that’s why DH decided I might like Henry more) but lifts the carpet how it goes and all the dirt gets removed first time.

picklecustard · 24/10/2020 22:49

I hated my shark too, really heavy and average suction. Nothing special.

WildIrishRose1 · 24/10/2020 22:55

@PuppyMonkey

Remember all those bra intervention threads where if you’re a size 34b in M&S you’re doing it wrong and you’re supposed to where a size 30gg but you have to go to bravissimo - that was all bollocks. Couldn’t stand how tight and uncomfortable they were.

You never see those threads any more I wonder why. Grin

This changed my life (or at least alleviated my back pain).
Tootletum · 24/10/2020 22:55

Hmm this thread makes me think I don't replace stuff very often. Since 2013 my washing machine broke so I got a new one. Both Bosch. Stupid obsession with filter coffee machines means I've gone through 3, now happy with the Melitta. Had a miele vacuum for 10 years. Hmm that's it. Just buy German seems to be the answer.

Fififerry1 · 24/10/2020 22:57

@thesockmonster - larder cupboard is amazing. All my friends have cupboard envy. We have a socket in there so keep the coffee machine and food processor plugged in out of sight.

QueenOfPain · 24/10/2020 23:13

I live in a two bed flat and have three hoovers. A hetty (brilliant, but agree with the pp about tipping over like a great drama queen all the time), a cordless dyson and a little hand held cordless thing (really doesn’t have much suck, but is adequate for cleaning up little spills of potting media, etc when I’m fussing with my houseplants).

QueenOfPain · 24/10/2020 23:14

Would die for a beautiful larder cupboard or even one of those standalone non fitted larder cabinets. But I am a big Costco fan so would love the space to organise all my purchases.

TitsInAbsentia · 24/10/2020 23:16

@IfIHadAHeart

Dr Martens. Looked lovely but fuck me they were uncomfortable and now just live in the wardrobe waiting for my next charity shop clear out.
There's a great second hand market for DMs however, they hold their value really well!!
redtulip12 · 24/10/2020 23:20

Eufy! Had mine a month, loved it but it would stop mid clean and say the sensors needed cleaning (they were fine) meant we couldn't put it on when out of the house so have just sent it back. Gutted. Now to look for another robovav that is reliable.

narcdad45 · 25/10/2020 00:01

@Firstaidnovice

I'm such a sucker for the Swears By emails, but in general most things have been either great, or at worst, just OK. Or returnable. I did get some really bad harem pants off ebay once from a recommendation. I also had a brief flirtation with zoflora about five years ago, and still have several nearly full bottles

And more recently I seem to have moved on to becoming more and more tempted by random Facebook ads, I blame lockdown. Very tempted by some weird device for unblocking plugholes.

🤣🤣🤣 the Bath plughole unblock ad is so good to watch, I'm very tempted! Also chair covers - I'm getting sucked in by them all!

Slow cookers - always mushy, watery slop that tastes all the same.

maverickallthetime · 25/10/2020 00:08

@OrtamLeevz

I am toying with the idea of getting a Lakeland heated clothes airer...
Mumsnet stopped me getting one, I'm getting a dehumidifier instead!
mammmamia · 25/10/2020 00:23

@Gettingthrough2020 if you google those exact words you’ll find it!

mammmamia · 25/10/2020 00:29

@Gettingthrough2020 I just remembered it’s called the Epistick but there are other brands available too.

Nikhedonia · 25/10/2020 00:37

I swear by the boob or bust method, though. The scooping bit is essential though, otherwise the pain of the underwire is awful.

Shelby1981 · 25/10/2020 00:51

Angus castus. Made me dizzy

moita · 25/10/2020 05:10

Love my Henry Hoover and has served me well but it us heavy and bulky

LolalovesLondon · 25/10/2020 05:36

I’ve never read the recommendations on here but just spotted this at the bottom of this thread:
Mumsnet carries some affiliate marketing links, so if you buy something through our posts, we may get a small share of the sale (more details here)

Wasn’t it invented for horse’s hooves ? Must admit I bought some years ago, I thought it was like expensive smelly Vaseline. Chucked it in the bin.
ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 25/10/2020 06:51

The bra thing had me coming out as something like a 38GG. tried one on, they were hanging in there like a couple of peaches in a lacy bag for life. I'm actually a 38dd.

Those korean cloths are shit.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 25/10/2020 06:53

Jml dri buddies are great if you were going to get the heated airer and can't have a tumble dryer.

Sexnotgender · 25/10/2020 06:55

I’d recommend a decent dehumidifier over a heated airer. I’ve had my meaco one for about a year now and it’s fantastic.

Full rack of laundry including jeans dry in less than a day.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 25/10/2020 07:11

Not necessarily.

I used to love my moon cup, it worked really well.
Then I had my second son and it still worked really well.

Then I had my third (massive) baby and I have a manageable prolapse and the moon cup no longer works ☹️
Nothing actually enters the cup.

Given than slight prolapses are presumably quite common (?) I believe people when they say they leak and don't work for them.
