Things MN have recommended on threads that you bought but turned out to be crap?

I'll start.

Shark vacuum cleaner.
I should have got another Miele. The Shark is just another average sucker upper.

A Dualit toaster.
After years of cheap toasters that starts off great but soon end up toasting one side more than the other, I listened to the years of recommendations on MN and spend £140 on an effing Dualit toaster just for it to do exactly what allllllll the other toasters do. The only difference is, is that it looks a tiny bit better and as though I have stupid money to throw at ridiculous items like toasters. Never again.

Anyone else?

What other things are always recommended by other Mumsnetters that actually turn out to be a bit shit?

As a Swede I am a little insulted that Electrolux hoovers are not even mentioned. Nothing sucks like Electrolux is the marketing phrase! Surely someone must hate them too? (I have one. It’s a hoover. It’s grand.)

gurteee · 25/10/2020 08:09

Perfume. When will I learn that someone else’s idea of “smells like summer” can mean anything from oranges to cut grass. Or Spanish drains from my last purchase.

@vizlsapup

I feel like period pants could be in this category.

What do you actually do with them every day? How are there not pairs of bloody unhygienic knickers in the washing basket or wet ones lying around the bathroom? Or daily laundry?

I already knew Moon Cups were bloody awful! Really uncomfortable and plastic turns a slightly pink colour. I went back to sanitary towels, perfectly happy.

I got my period pants from Cheeky Wipes and use one of their mucky boxes to soak the used ones in some cold water with a couple of drops of tea tree oil until I'm ready to do a wash. So in the bathroom there's just a closed box. I chuck the period stuff in on a cold rinse cycle first and then add the rest of the load. 30 degree max to avoid setting bloodstains and always a full (not "quick" wash cycle). Brilliant things, so comfortable especially for running and at night time.

Instant pot. So expensive, used once, threw away when moved as it was so huge

theDudesmummy · 25/10/2020 10:04

Moon cup was however the best thing ever, used for 10 years and loved it

ChetChet · 25/10/2020 12:24

I didn't get on with mooncup, either. I leaked no matter how I jiggled it higher, turned it, leaned it down or up.
The bright side is I did get on with Honour Your Flow towels and I have a lovely stash of them in my drawer. Off the back of MN recommendation.

Glad I read the thread, I was going to get some of the Ordinary stuff and have been thinking of a heated airer.

I hate slow cookers and mine hasn’t been out of the cupboard for years. I love my Ninja air fryer though. I do have a steam mop but it has been superseded by a Karcher hard floor cleaner which I like a lot.

YellowBeryl1 · 25/10/2020 15:59

Heated airer rubbish.

I read about getting a meaco dehumidifier on mumsnet and it has been amazing - laundry dried quickly and gently, no damage to clothes and no condensation on windows Grin

RainbowRaine · 25/10/2020 15:59

Another one I rate highly

Water based Lube for curly hair amazing curls and my hair is so soft.

0blio · 25/10/2020 16:48

Oven pride. I was most disappointed to find i still had to scrub very hard to get any dirt off the oven and it still looked like shit. Where I spilled it on the floor came up nice and clean though Confused

Dualit toaster. 80 odd quid and the matt rubbery finish ended up a sticky mess. Dualit's advice? 'Clean it with a damp cloth' Confused My Tesco £10 toaster looks lovely and works every bit as well.

I don't understand the love for the lakeland clothes airer, I use a dehumidifier which removes the damp in the room, the airer must add to it?

Slow cooker. I expected to come home from work to a lovely ready cooked meal, not inedible hard chewy meat in a watery sauce.

Love zoflora for my spray mop, don't like all the fragrances though.

Flaximum · 25/10/2020 16:57

Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely perfume, I saw it recommended here a few times. Thankfully it was cheap as I hated it.

Also don’t rate Shark vacuums at all.

Love my Instant Pot!

VenusClapTrap · 25/10/2020 17:46

Loved my Lakeland Heated Airer! I bought it thanks to recommendations on here and it was brilliant. The only reason I don’t use it now is because I’ve built a drying cupboard next to the boiler.

FairFridaythe13th · 25/10/2020 17:50

You can replace the filaments (is that what they are called?) of the Dualit. I like mechanical devices that you can take apart and replace worn out bits. A bit like a Beatle...

Chickenwing · 25/10/2020 17:50

Regarding the wetbrush, it needs to be the small ones. They are so soft and gentle yet glide through any tugs. Best brush i ever had (I got it in a beauty box)

I bought a new one when mines was done (large sized) and it sucks! Just feels like any other hair brush.

FairFridaythe13th · 25/10/2020 17:50

Beetle - not sure about the Beatles...

Buddytheelf85 · 25/10/2020 18:04

For me it was Zoflora - it’s absolutely vile!

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 25/10/2020 19:23

Love our Lakeland airer although ours is pretty old and getting a bit temperamental so just discussing when to get a new one

FairFridaythe13th · 25/10/2020 20:14

Is that a heated one? Is it good? I’d like one but it would need to have a small footprint.

Lollypop701 · 25/10/2020 20:53

I like zoflora... but then I also like bleach. Smells‘clean’

Murphs1 · 25/10/2020 21:03

Love my Eufy too Smile

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 26/10/2020 21:36

Came on to say Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream is an 'occasional' thing for me. Cleared up a skin rash for DD in no time, pretty good on very dry cuticles, and I believe you can use it to style hair if you'd rather use it up.

Heated Airer, Lakeland. I like mine. Lives in the conservatory, warms it up a bit, the cat likes the chair next to it. Easier to use, IME, if you start at the bottom with the racks not out, fill the bottom rack, then flip out the next rack up to use. I like being able to dry wool jumpers without having 'rack marks' on them.

LaMarschallin · 27/10/2020 09:28

Came on to say Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream is an 'occasional' thing for me.

I can take it or leave it but a friend who can't be doing with anything more cosmetic than soap and toothpaste, and is also a keen gardener and DIYer, swears by it for the deep, dry crevices they get on their hands.

OneFootintheRave · 12/11/2020 15:30

Came back to say that my MuthaScrubber finally arrived and is really good.

stampsurprise · 29/11/2020 07:03

Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely perfume, I saw it recommended here a few times. Thankfully it was cheap as I hated it.

Had to scrub it off. Vile stuff! Discovered I can't bear patchouli.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 29/11/2020 11:13

@FairFridaythe13th

Beetle - not sure about the Beatles...
Well, they replaced Pete Best with Ringo Starr, so who knows?? 😉
