I'll start.

Shark vacuum cleaner.
I should have got another Miele. The Shark is just another average sucker upper.

A Dualit toaster.
After years of cheap toasters that starts off great but soon end up toasting one side more than the other, I listened to the years of recommendations on MN and spend £140 on an effing Dualit toaster just for it to do exactly what allllllll the other toasters do. The only difference is, is that it looks a tiny bit better and as though I have stupid money to throw at ridiculous items like toasters. Never again.

Anyone else?

What other things are always recommended by other Mumsnetters that actually turn out to be a bit shit?

Steam mop. I think my house may be beyond actual cleaning, the steam mop was a total waste of money.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 23/10/2020 22:40

Prickly pear oil. Couldn't wait to try it... Expensive and brought me out in spots.

I love my Dualit toaster! 16 years old, looks like new still, and toasts really well. Or maybe I’m just sold on the colour and design still!
Ducksurprise · 23/10/2020 22:44

I'm waiting to see Eufy. I just can't bring myself to believe the MN hype.

NaughtipussMaximus · 23/10/2020 22:46

Oh our Shark is amazing! So much better than previous vacuums.

I do t think I’ve ever bought anything because it was recommended on here, sorry OP! I generally have very firm ideas of what I want.

CovidStoleTheRainbow · 23/10/2020 22:46

What the chuff is Eufy?!

It sounds as though you have never owned a Miele.....?

MN recommended that I LTB

I love mine! I was sceptical too but he’s a keeper.
WomanWithAnX · 23/10/2020 22:47

Babyliss Big Hair - pointless purchase that made no difference to my hair

Trinny London make-up - it was alright, but nothing special

LoungeLizardLhama · 23/10/2020 22:49

I love my shark vacuum! Granted I’ve never had a Miele so can’t compare the suction and I can imagine other vacuums do have better suction but it’s just so convenient! Everything clips out or off, it’s so handy for going under the bed or doing the stairs or random books and crannies. Love it.
I am very disappointed with my wet brush after reading on here about them being so much better than a tangle teaser, is it shite. The tangle teaser is loads better in my opinion. 😤

Those Korean washcloth things. Made for people with child sized hands so very fiddly and uncomfortable to use. People raved about them though!

Thecazelets · 23/10/2020 22:49

Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter, in the great 'It's just like Creme de la Mer!' frenzy about 15 years ago.

Clue: No it isn't.

Oh I bought a Trinny London item that was meant to banish lines. It was bloody useless! Cakey awful weird stuff. I sold it on eBay for 80% of the price so it clearly works for some!

It wasn't recommended on here though, I got swayed by a fb advert.

Off to Google "Eufy" Halloween Grin
antwacky · 23/10/2020 22:52

I love my Eufy, had him over eighteen months now and I bless the day I bought him.

Meepmeeep · 23/10/2020 22:53

A large chicken - thought I’d feed a family of 10 for a week. Didn’t happen. Angry

Wasail · 23/10/2020 22:55

Moon cup. MN goes on and on about these shitty, fiddly, messy things and they don’t work!

Firstaidnovice · 23/10/2020 22:58

I'm such a sucker for the Swears By emails, but in general most things have been either great, or at worst, just OK. Or returnable. I did get some really bad harem pants off ebay once from a recommendation. I also had a brief flirtation with zoflora about five years ago, and still have several nearly full bottles

And more recently I seem to have moved on to becoming more and more tempted by random Facebook ads, I blame lockdown. Very tempted by some weird device for unblocking plugholes.

Fatted · 23/10/2020 22:58

Waitrose = Exactly the same stuff I can buy in Asda cheaper
Lidl/Aldi = exactly the same price and quality as Asda/Tesco own brand products, without any of the conviences Asda/Tesco offer

Doublechins · 23/10/2020 23:00

With you on the Shark OP. I can see that if you had a fully carpeted home then yeah it would be good but it's the worst vacuum I've ever had for hard floors and I've had some crap ones.

Have to disagree with PP though love my mooncup and would never look back.

Not sure if ever bought anything after a MN recommendation though.

acerred · 23/10/2020 23:01

Jam shed wine

1Morewineplease · 23/10/2020 23:09

I'm another one who fell for the Shark verdicts but lasted only a month before we shelled out for a Miele.
Pet hair function was ok-ish ( golden retriever) but couldn't cope with my and my daughter's long hair at all. And it kept toppling over when stored( had to prop it up, despite what the ads.

Miele sucked up so much that it made the Shark look like a straw.
The Shark's emptying system was also a fag , by comparison.

Hype over substance.
But dare I say that the Shark was way better than the Dyson that we'd previously had!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 23/10/2020 23:10

Hair removing cream down the drain does not clear the hair.

Gilmore Girls isnt wonderful. I watched 3 seasons thinking this must be the episode where it gets good. One whiny selfcentered adult who needs to grow the fuck up and learn to speak rather than quip.
