To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?

Remember Marcus Rashford and his campaign to extend free school meals? Yesterday all but a handful of Tory MPs voted against extending free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021. You can see if your MP is amongst them here: votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/896#noes

Whatever your thoughts on what parents should be doing some children are going to go hungry. Why punish the children because of the sins of the parent? And remember most people on benefits are in work.

Plus there is a bloody pandemic. We’re in unprecedented times. People who were just about managing are now on the bones of their arse.

We have billions to spaff up the wall on a useless test and trace system, or useless Ppe but we can’t feed a few hungry kids. And le’t not forget that the MPs voting against this get subsidised meals and can claim for their food on expenses.

@annabel85

Controversial opinion: charities are the Tories enablers.

Charities are essential and do a great job but they allow the Tories to get away with it.

Yes. Take food banks, The Trussell Trust set up in the early 2000's and were a lifeline for many during the 2008 recession and yes this was under a Labour government but it was in 2011 that they really expanded. Why in a country that was booming did so many have to depend on food banks to live? And the fact that so many of the people relying on food banks are in full time employment?
MuthaFunka61 · 23/10/2020 12:09

Can we use the term 'social security' which is a more accurate reflection rather than 'benefits' ,'welfare ect?

PinkBuffalo · 23/10/2020 12:12

@TwentyViginti

This is the most enraging fact to me. MPs have access to subsidised and free meals, but vote against some kids in need having that access.

Completely agree with this. It is disgusting
Ginfordinner · 23/10/2020 12:28

A local chippy is offereng a free lunch to all the kids that require one next week, and people are posting on their FB page that they would like to donate to pay for them.

The community spirit is alive and kicking among the constituents, if not our brown nosing MP.

Ginfordinner · 23/10/2020 12:30

And a local coffe shop is as well now. There are some lovely folk out there.

Enoughnowstop · 23/10/2020 12:33

My town is having a collective whip round for the food bank so it can support the families who need it. Over £3000 raised last I looked, we are statistically very deprived and our local industry has been decimated by covid.

Same here. Local small food businesses are offering to feed local children and families. Shame on the government for failing in their duty
LizzieSiddal · 23/10/2020 12:43

Well have bloody soup kitchens for children next. Angry

It’s ok to give adults vouchers to eat out to help out, but not hungry children.

Kissthepastrychef · 23/10/2020 12:47

www.parliament.uk/globalassets/documents/commons-catering/own-label-wines.pdf

It should be soft drinks only, what other work canteen has it's own wine list?! Angry

The government have sent this to schools about school meal provision. They've got a bloody nerve.

I'm disgusted by this.

Whilst I'm fortunate these days, I grew up pretty poor.

I've just written to my conservative MP stating how disgusted I am that he followed the party line.

I don't suppose I'll get a reply!

they enjoyed all these perks all through the austerity years. Not just Tories either.

If you are on twitter, check out Marcus Rashford's timeline or #endchildfoodpoverty

I do agree that it is disgusting that it is down to charity and not the government, and their excuses for voting against it.

Acerred · 23/10/2020 13:17

School meals aren't a perk, they are a necessity. I'm not sure why you posted that on a copy of a letter from the government to schools about school meal provision?

sorry I meant to quote the post showing the HOC menu! ignore me I need my glasses on and quite agree with you Blush
MrsPnut · 23/10/2020 13:28

@Tootletum

I don't get this. There has never been free school meals in holidays, under any government. There are millions of things that could be free if this is the rationale. If you're too poor to make a sandwich for your kids, are you too poor to buy toilet paper? And in what sense are these free meals? They're paid for by a massively dwindling tax take, which is being plugged by incredible levels of government debt. The UK credit rating was downgraded last week for the second time, so this debt will cost far more to service. It's not free. The debt will still be accruing to our grandchildren. But sure, by all means just make it as simple as "nasty tories".
You do realise that the institution lending the money is The Bank of England, it will never be repaid and so long as QE money is used to fund infrastructure projects then it should generate increased revenue throughout the country. The problem is where the Tories use QE money to fund contracts with their mates for PPE that is substandard, or a track and trace system that doesn't work.

www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/quantitative-easing

Kissthepastrychef · 23/10/2020 13:34

The country is too poor to spend money on the children of the "undeserving" poor (aka minimum wage, zero hour contract quasi-slaves) but definitely not too poor to subsidise people earning £75k to travel to work and to trough down on £9 steaks, washed down with £35 bottles of own label shampoo

I might look into standing at the next parliament. Given the work ethic of our MP Sally Ann Hart all you need to do is bung out a few tweets a week, toe the party line and watch the gravy train roll in

Peregrina · 23/10/2020 14:53

Do stand Kissthepastrychef - or stand at least in Local elections if you have some coming up next May. It can force lazy councillors/MPs to get off their backsides and start going out doing the slog of canvassing.

( Note, I am not saying that all MPs/councillors are lazy, but some most definitely don't put too much effort in. They then whinge about how they couldn't do (whatever) because they have been voted out. In those cases, I think to myself, 'well you had 15 years chum and didn't bother, so why should I think you will start now?')

PhlegmyHead · 23/10/2020 15:00

It's almost as if the issue is more complex than "feeding the poor" and that there are other considerations such as budgets, logistics and the overall economy to take into consideration

Oh no ours isn't lazy - he's busy working for several companies in a consultancy capacity - he has no time for silly nonsense like communicating with his constituents and those constituents don't care what he does as long as he's a Tory.
Kissthepastrychef · 23/10/2020 15:04

@PhlegmyHead if there wasn't rampant nepotism, hypocrisy and a general whiff of "I'm alright Jack" coming off the commons in waves I could accept your point. But there's plenty for those that they want to give it to, as usual.
