To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?

Remember Marcus Rashford and his campaign to extend free school meals? Yesterday all but a handful of Tory MPs voted against extending free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021. You can see if your MP is amongst them here: votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/896#noes

Whatever your thoughts on what parents should be doing some children are going to go hungry. Why punish the children because of the sins of the parent? And remember most people on benefits are in work.

Plus there is a bloody pandemic. We’re in unprecedented times. People who were just about managing are now on the bones of their arse.

We have billions to spaff up the wall on a useless test and trace system, or useless Ppe but we can’t feed a few hungry kids. And le’t not forget that the MPs voting against this get subsidised meals and can claim for their food on expenses.

Who feeds the children on weekends throughout the year?

ExemptFromMasksSupporter · 24/10/2020 23:21

The MP in my local area and the 3 areas closely surrounding us all voted against, what a resounding shower of shite.

timetobackout · 24/10/2020 23:22

As Andrew Neil says Google is your friend.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 24/10/2020 23:25

@WrongKindOfFace

How is it new money to replace the vouchers when it was introduced in April and everyone on UC gets it, not just those whose children get FSM.
Yes, i agree

I would really really really like to believe that The mps just voted against the METHOD of payment

So links to the extra money being given would be very helpful

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 24/10/2020 23:29

GetOffYourHighHorse - Marcus Rashford is admirable but what he should be campaigning for is the restart of places like Sure Start where those on a low income can get the support and health advice needed to give their kids the correct nutrition.

@GetOffYourHighHorse the Sure Start centres that were closed down when the Tories were following their austerity policy?

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jun/16/sure-start-numbers-plummet-as-cuts-hit-childrens-services

There were childrens centres established locally when i had my first DC, as a first time parent the services they offered were so valuable. It was awful watching them lose their funding and withdraw services.

Link to UC extra money given in April to all, (scroll down)

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 24/10/2020 23:53

Thank you tramp

I can’t see any extra money for fsm in there (i did skim so may have missed it)

It appeared to be a (much needed) raise for everyone, children or no

Or am I missing something

WrongKindOfFace · 24/10/2020 23:57

@Trampslikeu

So it’s not extra money to replace vouchers at all then? It’s the payment everyone got from April. Which is, according to that link, only for one year.

Update on Free School Meals

This week there has been a vote in Parliament on the issue of Free School Meals which I have always campaigned for, voted for and which I strongly support.

I want to reassure you that despite the headlines, the Government did not vote to end free school meals or vote against extending them to school holidays. The vote this week was specifically on the voucher system used by parents which has been plagued with problems since it was introduced earlier this year. We voted to continue providing Free School Meals but change the voucher system during school holidays to instead paying parents the money directly via their universal credit with £1000 extra a year.

The voucher system was introduced earlier in the year by the Government because children who qualified for free school meals were not getting them because their schools were closed due to COVID. So the voucher system was set up by the Government so parents could collect vouchers and use them at supermarkets in exchange for food.

Since then schools have now reopened in recent weeks and children can now access their free school meals as normal. Free Schools meals have never previously been available during school holiday but recognising the difficult times we are in the Government did continue with the voucher scheme during both the Easter and Summer holidays.

However following feedback from many parents, charities and organisations such as the Resolution Foundation we found many have been struggling with the vouchers scheme as not all supermarkets take them, not all parents have access to a major supermarket near them and there is stigma in using them too.

So as a replacement for the voucher scheme the Government introduced a £1000 a year extra UC payment , on a weekly payment basis, to cover the cost of the vouchers and pay parents direct so they could shop where they wanted. These payments started a couple of months ago and are for every week and not just school holiday weeks as was the case for the voucher scheme.

In addition we extended the number of pupils able to receive free school meals by an extra 50,000.

So this week I didn't vote to scrap free school meals , I voted to end the voucher scheme and instead support giving extra money to parents via Universal credit instead .

This is interesting and it ensures the money is in the families hand

@glazeover

You do know this wasn’t a binding vote, so effectively it was meaningless? That it was opposition showboating? That the Conservatives were whipped?
If it was that unimportant, why on earth did the Conservatives feel it necessary to use the whip?
Rosehip10 · 25/10/2020 00:29

Anyone who voted tory should hang their head in shame.

littlebillie · 25/10/2020 07:47

@Rosehip10

Anyone who voted tory should hang their head in shame.
I clearly remember that Labour had poor, ineffective leadership who nobody had confidence in.

So I didn't vote Labour but I have in the past

LizzieSiddal · 25/10/2020 07:54

Did anyone see Sky News, Newspaper review last night. One of thenreviwers said he had been told the Tory’s will announce FSMs for this Xmas holidays.
They obviously just didn’t want Labour winning a vote. Also they don’t give a fuck about the hungry children this Oct half term. Angry

knickybricks · 25/10/2020 08:10

@littlebillie That £1000 increase in UC is getting attributed to a lot. First it was introduced in April 2020 to all claimants (not just those woth kids) for Covid Hardship and we all know that was needed, then months later from Trampslikeu Tory MP, that £1000 conveniently became ear marked as a direct replacement for free meals vouchers over the summer - I simply cannot see any mention of that in April 2020. It seems the Tories are changing the facts after the event to fit with their shameful tactics.

What was it Theresa May said in 2002 "There's a lot we need to do in this party of ours. Our base is too narrow and so, occasionally, are our sympathies. You know what some people call us - the nasty party."

Not much has changed in terms of the party's sympathies but they have managed to broaden their base - shocking really despite years of crushing austerity, people thought Brexit was more important than looking after the vulnerable and voted for these shower of bastards again!

littlebillie · 25/10/2020 08:43

The whole idea regarding UC was to get away from the "nanny state" model are we saying that this isn't working and that benefits need to paid for each item separately rather than giving people the choice on how to spend their money.

I think we need to hear to a universal income where everyone gets a living allowance and pay more tax on earned additional income.

LizzieSiddal · 25/10/2020 09:00

Kinkybricks shocking really despite years of crushing austerity, people thought Brexit was more important than looking after the vulnerable and voted for these shower of bastards again!

I wonder if they will ever learn?

Rosehip10 · 25/10/2020 09:09

@littlebillie Well, I would say the leadership of this government (and unelected "advisors") is the very definition of "poor and ineffective"......

Peregrina · 25/10/2020 09:09

I wonder if those thinking that Brexit was more important were really saying that they were fed up with hearing about Brexit. Johnson promised a deal, so they thought it was good and we would carry on much as before?

knickybricks · 25/10/2020 10:17

I really worry at the thought of people voting in a particular direction because they are bored of the topic - it really makes me concerned about the mental age of voters. But then I see it all the time on here - bored of BLM, bored of Captain Tom Moore, bored of Brexit, bored of Covid etc. As if the news exists for entertainment - it's like some sick dystopian tv show - bored now? vote to delete - who gives a shit about the outcome! We just need a new story to obsess and fixate on for another few days.

TBF politicians very often use something they gave for one thing and pretend it was for something else, but surely in this particular case the "covid hardship" really could be said to include any difficulties around feeding the DCs?

I've no more time for political chicanery than anyone else, but isn't "what Covid's done to family finances" what it's all supposed to be about?

It was given to everyone on UC kids or not. It could be said that those with kids would struggle more and need extra support.
Trampslikeu · 25/10/2020 17:27

Everyone entitled to free school meals will still get a meal or payment for a meal, paid every week including school holidays.

This is true for my council, however is now a postcode lottery
