To want everyone to know the names of the MPs who voted against feeding hungry children?

Remember Marcus Rashford and his campaign to extend free school meals? Yesterday all but a handful of Tory MPs voted against extending free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021. You can see if your MP is amongst them here: votes.parliament.uk/Votes/Commons/Division/896#noes

Whatever your thoughts on what parents should be doing some children are going to go hungry. Why punish the children because of the sins of the parent? And remember most people on benefits are in work.

Plus there is a bloody pandemic. We’re in unprecedented times. People who were just about managing are now on the bones of their arse.

We have billions to spaff up the wall on a useless test and trace system, or useless Ppe but we can’t feed a few hungry kids. And le’t not forget that the MPs voting against this get subsidised meals and can claim for their food on expenses.

@mellongoose

Not one person on here has mentioned that this was an opposition day motion which would not have become law even if 650 MPs voted for it.

The political discourse in this country has become chilling and scary. I feel sorry for anyone who puts themselves forward for this shit.

FWIW kids will be in exactly the same position this October half term as they were last October half term. Except there will be more people on UC which is also scary and rubbish. But it is enough to feed your kids.

what rubbish and to correct you, it has been mentioned. We are well aware this was a Labour proposal. You've seen how fast, decisions can be made if the government is in favour.
knickybricks · 23/10/2020 07:59

Our MP votes with Boris Johnson - whatever Boris Johnson suggests he supports it - he is devoid of moral thinking skills but we live in a very Tory area - they’ll vote for anyone as long as they are Tory and the one they got this time is heading for the top and he doesn’t care how many kids have to starve for him to get there!

Sooverthemill · 23/10/2020 08:00

@DontBeShelfish

Wow, even Farage thinks it's bad.
I'm hadn't seen that!
mellongoose · 23/10/2020 08:06

What I mean is the votes on these are meaningless.

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2020 08:07

Local businesses are now stepping in

Marcus Rashford tweet
Blown away by news of local businesses stepping up to fill the voucher scheme deficit during the October half term. Selflessness, kindness, togetherness, this is the England I know 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Add #ENDCHILDFOODPOVERTY to your tweets so I can track them. I will share as many as I can ♥️

So when you see a child on fsm having a take away, it's probably part of the scheme.

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2020 08:09

Meaningless, why?

Carolwithane · 23/10/2020 08:09

Shower of corrupt amoral self serving bastards. Nothing but contempt for those at the bottom of the pile. No fucking idea of life in the real world. And despite all of this the poor bastards that are suffering at their hands will vote them in again cos they want to make Britain great again. Saints preserve us.

They might be ineffectual, but meaning is the entire point of such motions. They draw attention to certain issues and show which way the wind is blowing in Parliament. Tories overwhelmingly voted against extending free meals for children just as we face no deal in the pandemic, and just after urging us all to go out to eat as much as possible.

What does that tell us?

QNCQNC · 23/10/2020 08:16

@ConfusedcomMum

Didn't they recently give themselves a 10k pay rise or something? Disgraceful really.
No, no they didn’t.
daisypond · 23/10/2020 08:19

They’ve given themselves a £3000+ payrise. You couldn’t make it up.

Ethelfleda · 23/10/2020 08:28

Parts of my constituency are deprived and it comes as no surprise that our MP voted no. Arsehole.

Ethelfleda · 23/10/2020 08:36

For those criticising the parents of these children, remember that in a capitalist society you have to have a precariat in order to prop up the middle and upper classes.

mrshoho · 23/10/2020 08:38

@ConfusedcomMum

All MPs were given an additional £10000 for expenses due to the covid pandemic. The rules for providing receipts for purchases was also very strangely removed as was the single item limit. Going on past track records I wonder how many took advantage. I'm sure my MP has.

We need to get this message across at election time. Jeremy Corbyn tried to.
Peregrina · 23/10/2020 08:41

Education is the key - how to budget and manage money.

Which I suggest is rubbish. Boris Johnson does not want for an (expensive) education yet has been bleating how he can't manage on his £150,000 PM's salary. This is despite the subsidised meals at his place of work. Let him try to budget when he is on a zero hours contract and doesn't know when he will next have any money coming in.

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2020 08:44

Boris Johnson, the man who doesn't even know how many children he has. But that's ok because he has money.

Kissthepastrychef · 23/10/2020 08:48

Caroline Ansell is the MP where I used to live. She replaced an incredibly dedicated Lib Dem. she also went to my school.
Just in case anyone thinks she is some wonderful kind Conservative, this is the only time she has ever rebelled and while I applaud her stance on this I would like to mention some of her previous voting...

Voted to keep VAT on Sanpro
Consistently votes to decrease benefits
Voted against right to remain in the UK for EU residents
Anti EU
Voted against higher benefits for the disabled
Regularly votes to restrict union activity

And it goes on

Caroline is a Tory through and through and just because she voted against the government on this issue she certainly is no poster girl for caring and sharing

RLGGG · 23/10/2020 08:53

I'm a teacher. I little while ago the boundaries of which children qualified for free school meals changed. As a result, many many young people who need help had their access to free school meals removed. It would be wonderful to be able to provide food for students who have FSM throughout the holidays but if there was money available, I would love the government to reinstate the previous definition of which children qualify for help through the term. Schools are trying desperately to support these young people throughout the term with free breakfasts etc but its heartbreaking that the support doesn't come from above. Their families are no better off that they were before the change, they just no longer receive any support.

All the more reason to applaud her. This may well have been the straw that broke the camel’s back for her. Give the woman credit where it’s due.
Kissthepastrychef · 23/10/2020 09:06

Vinyl, believe me it won't be. She was voted out in 2017 because the electorate realised what they lost when they voted out Stephen Lloyd (who really was a fabulous MP, representing his constituency interests properly not just the party or his own)
I know both of them. Believe me when I say it won't be the beginning of some enlightenment on her behalf.

Not surprised my mp is on there he doesnt give a shit. He'll be getting both barrels off me later if I email him now I'm likely to start ranting.

annabel85 · 23/10/2020 10:39

Controversial opinion: charities are the Tories enablers.

Charities are essential and do a great job but they allow the Tories to get away with it.

Xiaoxiong · 23/10/2020 11:18

annabel this is what my Danish au pair said to me earlier this year when we were doing a virtual LAJOG run to raise money for our local children's hospice. Why on earth does it rely on individuals to do this, why isn't it funded by taxation. She said in Denmark there isn't the same culture of things like food banks, medical research and hospices funded by charity, because the state funds those things. They pay a bit more in tax but it's less per month than many people donate to charity, and it spreads it out more fairly so eg. you don't get millions paid to one kind of cancer research and very little paid to another just because they aren't so good at fundraising.

I donate a lot to charity, but it did make me pause to think...the "big society" is in effect shifting the burden from the state to individual efforts via charity.
