To think its ok to send my ironing out?

Have discovered this fab ironing lady just down the road from me but DH keeps moaning that i'm sending it out all the time. Its just such a relief to bung it in a bag and have it all come back nicely pressed. Am a SAHM so should i be making time to do it myself?

blimey - is there such a thing as a non contentious subject on MN....?

EmsMum · 23/10/2007 22:49

My DH actually WANTS me to send the ironing out... he has got it into his head DD is going to have some horrible burn accident. She's 8 and at least one of her classmates already irons his own school shirts. (theres a mama with the right idea on man training!)

I have no idea why I'm resisting this notion - when I worked full-time I sent out the ironing and had a cleaner and a nanny.

Anyhow OP ... if your kids are little'uns then find some scary statistics on accidents in the home and tearfully tell DH that he'd never forgive himself if something awful happened

Chipstick · 23/10/2007 22:53

Pay someone to do the ironing? I'm sat here on mumsnet whilst hubby is doing it

I haven't ironed in the 10yrs we've been married

catsmother · 23/10/2007 22:57

I don't mind ironing - horses for courses I guess. I usually do mine very late at night (midnight !) while catching up on recordings of Spooks, Michael Palin or Who Do You Think You Are !

However ..... I must admit to feeling jealous of those who have the spare dosh to spend on easing their lives in any way. Obviously, that's up to them and it doesn't matter what the help you pay for is so long as you claw back some precious time.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 23/10/2007 22:57

Chipstick

You are lucky, or should that be boastful.

ssd · 24/10/2007 08:56

chipstick, my dh does most of the ironing too

leaving me with plenty time to run our social calendar

ssd · 24/10/2007 09:08

Bree - apologies for that last comment!

very chippy (and I'm not being funny...)

lets just agree to disagree on some things!

WideWebWitch · 24/10/2007 09:18

Gosh, there was a fight on an ironing thread? ha ha ha.

Bet it went
I pay to get my ironing done
you lazy slattern
I do it myself and I wash everything by hand, I am uber mum
I don't do it
everyone's entitled to their view
not when it includes that sahms are shit they're not

etc etc
am I right?

I don't iron anything, ever, never have. With very very rare exceptions.

bozza · 24/10/2007 09:30

All these people with young children asking when they can do the ironing. The answer is clear - in the evening when the children have gone to bed. Fine, if you want to pay someone else to do it, but don't pretend it is an impossibility to fit it in. I have worked part time or been on maternity leave with young children for the last 6 years. I have a DH who wears work shirts. Virtually all that ironing has been done in the evenings by me or DH (probably on a 70-30 split although I don't think DH had even picked up an iron before I got pregnant with DS).

bozza · 24/10/2007 09:36

EmsMum has a good point. I am thinking of starting to do more ironing in the day, so my children don't think we have an ironing fairy. I told my 3yo that her job was to put her own clothes in the basket. And she said "yes mummy and it is your job to put your clothes in the basket". Yes DD and sort them and load the machine, and hang out on the line and bring in and iron and put away. Although TBH DD is quite often with me during the washing/drying process. I bargained with DS that I would sew on his Beavers' badges if he put a load of washing on for me. It took him 6 trips to carry it downstairs, then he stuck the machine on at cottons 60 with no liquid in so I had to stop it pronto. Still took me longer to sew the blardy badges on, mind you.

pigletmaker · 24/10/2007 13:13

I'm not asking when I can do the ironing thanks. At 33 wks pregnant I am putting my feet up when the other baby is finally asleep. Then I'm tidying up, making dinner and working on my magnum opus.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 24/10/2007 13:21

SSD - No problem.

Anna8888 · 24/10/2007 13:27

bozza - my daughter has never gone to bed before me. And she doesn't even take a nap any more...

MALO · 24/10/2007 15:20

ssd - social calendar? Whats one of them then? My calendar is taken up with after school clubs, dental appts, hair appts, vets appts, school training dates and the odd scribbles that I can't decipher...how I'd love to put a 'social' entry on my calendar!

bozza · 24/10/2007 15:55

That is fine pigletmaker - that is your choice and if you are happy with it no problem. I am just saying that is what I did - and yes at 33 weeks pregnant I used to do the ironing when my DS was in bed - although I think the 70-30 was shifted round at that stage. It is not impossible, but if you prefer to spend the money to give you more time/rest then that is your choice.

ssd · 24/10/2007 17:22

malo - read the thread!

MALO · 24/10/2007 19:12

And?

elliemac · 24/10/2007 19:18

Have just bagged up my ironing to send out, then i'm going to sit on my arse and watch corrie seen as i haven't actually sat down all day. Although apparently (according to some), those of us who send our ironing out are lazy buggers!!!

OP posts:
MALO · 24/10/2007 19:24

I don't need to send my ironing out to be deemed a 'lazy bugger' ! ....

elliemac · 24/10/2007 19:27

Me either. Maybe i need a rocket up my backside!!!

OP posts:
MALO · 24/10/2007 19:35

What gets me (soap box time!) is there are those that think just because I'm a SAHM (altho I do work a few hours a week) that I shouldn't choose to get a cleaner in/ironing done etc....if I can afford to do so.

SSD's comments really bugged me: 'Mummy's with too much time on their hands' and 'spoilt' and 'Oh my DH does the ironing so I can run our social calender'....

Oh whoopie doo!

elliemac · 24/10/2007 19:44

jealousy is a terrible thing!

OP posts:
pinkspottywellies · 24/10/2007 19:53

I wonder if the people who think it's lazy to send the ironing out can honestly say they never pay to have anything done for them. Order shopping online? Buy ready meals/frozen vegetables/tinned soup? Have a car wash?

It's just a question of choice and priorities within your budget.

elliemac · 24/10/2007 19:56

Well said pink! You'll notice that i'm still here and not watching corrie as i previously said i would be. Could have got some ironing done in that time couldn't i?

Elasticwoman · 24/10/2007 19:59

I think there are many worse ways to spend your money.
