to think that peeing gallons of blood & having a fever is an emergency?

I've a history of urinary tract infections progressing to kidney infections since I was about 3 years old. 18 years ago I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, but following treatment it has been in remission since then.

After an extremely stressful life experience I had what I thought was yet another urinary tract infection but yesterday it progressed to blood literally pouring out of me whenever I urinate, and I'm having to urinate at least once every 20 minutes. During the night I counted the number of times I had to get up to pee it was 21 times. And each time I peed blood my urine is quite intense red, and it is EXCRUCIATINGLY painful. I am shivering and sweating. I called 111 and they told me a "local service" would call me back. The local service was this awful rude woman who told me to just drink lots of water and to try to get a GP appointment later this year and just kept asking me if I have friends and a support system. She was so rude and eventually hung up on me.

The last time I had these symptoms I ended up with a serious kidney infection and hospitalised for several days. Clearly I need antibiotics.
Am I to just sit here getting progressively more ill?

Get yourself to A&E. I would have zero faith that a woman who has previously hung up on you has sorted anything. Db had this and was hours from needing hospital admission but fortunately could be treated with antibiotics. He had to have my dad come over and hold him up whilst he peed as so much blood was coming out. He was asked to bring a sample to practice in the morning and had a quizzical look from the nurse who asked 'is that a urine sample' because it was so full of blood. Just go and get the help you need. You'll be in the right place. I would be tempted to find a clean pot and bring a urine sample to show the nurse on triage.

If you had bladder cancer 18 years ago and are now peeing blood, you need an urgent scan of your bladder, bot antibiotics- your GP's being a bit of a twit.

Get yourself to A&E and insist on a scan.

squishee · 19/10/2020 12:06

OMG skip the shower. Straight to A&E.

tectonicplates · 19/10/2020 12:08
@Member984815 I've not been to a and e in years. Is it true there's usually a 7 hour wait to see someone?
You'll be triaged, so you see someone for a quick consultation first, then they assess how important it is compared to everyone else there.

It's different in each area, but apparently a lot of A&Es are quiet at the moment as so many people are staying away due to Corona.

Get yourself to A&E now!!!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 19/10/2020 12:17

No wonder you're disorientated if you've lost a fair bit of blood (although a little blood does go a VERY long way and look worse than it might be) AND you've got a fever.

Get the cab, get to A&E and hopefully they'll sort you out. And if the rude twat calls you back again say that you're going to A&E because that's where you need to be, and she can let your GP know that's what you're doing.

I honestly hope she gets hauled over the coals for her first response - dismal.

babygroups · 19/10/2020 12:23

Take an overnight bag to A&E, your phone, charger, money & snacks.

Every time I've been to A&E I've ended up being kept in.

Hope you're ok op Thanks

amusedbush · 19/10/2020 12:24

My mum had blood in her urine and a fever a couple of years ago. She woke in the night hallucinating and taking gibberish to my dad, who phoned an ambulance and she was blue-lighted to hospital with sepsis.

Please get to A&E soon before it gets any worse.

RamblingFar · 19/10/2020 12:24

I went directly to A+E with similar symptoms (but no past history).

I probably should have tried 111, but it was a Friday night.

Both my local A+E were also minor injuries and urgent care, with the same triage for all three . Still don't know why the rest of the country doesn't do it that way.

Hope you're sorted out soon.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 19/10/2020 12:25

I'd ring the gp, they must answer the phone at some point surely. Don't they do Econsults?

Its hard to know what 'gallons of blood' actually means. If you are indeed hemorrhaging of course call an ambulance. If you mean you are passing blood when you pass urine then as I said, GP first. I wouldn't want to go to a&e in a pandemic unless it actually was an emergency.

bengalcat · 19/10/2020 12:26

Go to A and E .

AKissAndASmile · 19/10/2020 12:28

Who the hell is voting YABU Hmm
Some proper weirdos on MN.

cosmo30 · 19/10/2020 12:38

Hope you're on the way to a&e. Sounds like an infection so rather than just taking antibiotics it needs to be checked out to see what's causing it

Hopeisnotastrategy · 19/10/2020 12:41

Go to A & E, you are one of the people they are there for and the sooner you get there the sooner they can start sorting you out. Good luck, I'm sure you go with all our good wishes. ❤️

Wheytaminute · 19/10/2020 12:43

You definitely need to be seen urgently. Especially given your medical history.

Hope all goes well.

PolarBearStrength · 19/10/2020 12:48

Please go to A&E OP. People who
Complain about the wait in A&E are usually the people who aren’t ill enough to be there and don’t get seen urgently. You on the other hand are very unwell.

Heyahun · 19/10/2020 12:48

Omg just go to a&e sounds so serious

houselikeashed · 19/10/2020 12:50

Good luck OP. Please come back on when you're feeling better and let us know how you are. Flowers

NeverAMillionMilesAway · 19/10/2020 12:50

If you are ever seriously ill, forget 111.
Just get to A+E, they will see you as soon as they can (the wait time will depend on the urgency of your own illness, and the numbers and urgency levels of other people waiting, so impossible to tell)

Coughsyrupsucks · 19/10/2020 12:51

A&E now! My DD got sepsis from a UTI that wasn’t even that bad. Please go.

HibiscusNell · 19/10/2020 12:53

Good luck OP

ladymuck111 · 19/10/2020 12:55

Good luck OP. Get to A&E and get checked over properly.

Jakie7700 · 19/10/2020 12:57

I would go to A&E. I had a poor service from 111 last week for my daughter she needed to see someone and they were not intrested at all. Ended up in A&E with her being kept in and needed antibiotics. Please go

ilovemydogandMrObama · 19/10/2020 13:00

Kidney pain is right up there with the worst pain ever. Flowers

Nat6999 · 19/10/2020 13:03

I had similar, got up ok in the morning, by mid afternoon my wee looked like lumpy gravy, I was in agony. I ended up being sent to A & E by my GP with suspected sepsis. I was eventually sent home with antibiotics that would have knocked out a horse, was on them for 14 days, had 5 days after I finished them & it started again. It took 5 different antibiotics until they found something to totally kill the infection, I lost 1.5 stone in a month & was very weak for ages afterwards.

Felifox · 19/10/2020 13:03

I hope you're at A&E now and getting treated.
