to think that peeing gallons of blood & having a fever is an emergency?

I've a history of urinary tract infections progressing to kidney infections since I was about 3 years old. 18 years ago I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, but following treatment it has been in remission since then.

After an extremely stressful life experience I had what I thought was yet another urinary tract infection but yesterday it progressed to blood literally pouring out of me whenever I urinate, and I'm having to urinate at least once every 20 minutes. During the night I counted the number of times I had to get up to pee it was 21 times. And each time I peed blood my urine is quite intense red, and it is EXCRUCIATINGLY painful. I am shivering and sweating. I called 111 and they told me a "local service" would call me back. The local service was this awful rude woman who told me to just drink lots of water and to try to get a GP appointment later this year and just kept asking me if I have friends and a support system. She was so rude and eventually hung up on me.

The last time I had these symptoms I ended up with a serious kidney infection and hospitalised for several days. Clearly I need antibiotics.
Am I to just sit here getting progressively more ill?

@Tryingtoheal I hope you are being looked after now and have been seen promptly.

notawittyname1954 · 19/10/2020 17:30

please come back here OP at some point and let us know you are ok

Porridgeoat · 19/10/2020 17:31

Any news op?

DrTemperanceBrennan · 19/10/2020 17:38

Go to A&E, but be prepared for a fight. I recently had to take a family member to A&E after they were very badly bitten by a child at their school (specialist SEND unit), and the wound was extremely swollen, red and inflamed, relative was burning up yet shivering. Having had sepsis I know the signs so insisted they go to A&E, only to be told “there’s a pandemic on, we don’t have time for this,” asked about ten times if she had Covid, and left on a chair for four hours while the six nurses and reception staff who were rushed off their feet and at the point of collapse...arranging their breaks and chatting about Strictly Come Dancing. Eventually a consultant came out and asked how long she had been there, and she was rushed up to critical care to be put on a drop to flush out sepsis 🙄🙄🙄🙄. No faith at all in the NHS anymore! Take someone with you if possible and be prepared for a hell of an argument that you actually need medical treatment!

Keeping everything crossed for you OP Flowers

LemonPeonies · 19/10/2020 18:05

What a silly woman, clearly not medically trained Confused as a registered nurse I would be very concerned and consider it an emergency. Obvious symptoms of a UTI as you say, which can very quickly lead to sepsis and potentially death! Please formally complain about her.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 19/10/2020 18:06

Sad hope you are okay OP. That sounds horrendous.

LemonPeonies · 19/10/2020 18:08

@DrTemperanceBrennan oh yes of course we're not allowed to ensure we organise a break for ourselves to have a quick drink, wee and bit to eat. And heaven forbid we discuss anything else aside from work! Not exactly unprofessional to talk about TV 🙄

Justwingingmotherhood · 19/10/2020 18:38

I think you need to call yourself an ambulance!!

BrutusMcDogface · 19/10/2020 18:44

You would do that when a patient with suspected sepsis is in your waiting room? Yeah right.

Newbeginningsnow · 19/10/2020 18:57

This is terrifying I hope you’re ok OP! So scary.

GameSetMatch · 19/10/2020 19:25

Go to A&E!

CallmeAngelina · 19/10/2020 20:08

Stand down! The last post the OP made stated that she was indeed going to A&E.
I suspect that is why she has been unable to update us.

grassisjeweled · 19/10/2020 20:13

How are you doing, Trying2?

Poppyapplebobber · 19/10/2020 20:43

I had a bladder infection whilst heavily pregnant. Couldn't get a drs app as it was a weekend. Waited for 111 to call me back. Kept chasing. 28 hours later they called me at 10pm Sunday night and told me that they had an appointment for me at a local drop in NHS centre. It was at 2am in the morning in the worst possible part of town. The nurse on the phone went ballistic when I told her that I might as well wait until 8am and call my own dr. She accused me of not caring about my unborn baby (despite the fact that I had tried to get help all weekend and that driving to a health centre on the worst council estate in an unfamiliar area and having to park and waddle there at 8mths pregnant at 2 am in the morning alone wasn't particularly good for my welfare either). She was so rude. I did take the appointment in the end, but had to wait up all night and didn't get home until 4am.

Arthersleep · 19/10/2020 21:52

@DrTemperanceBrennan

I had a similar experience. 111 failed to diagnose Sepsis as did the triage nurse when my husband was extremely ill. He collapsed and ended up in a coma on life support for weeks.

An acquaintance of mine has just lost their sil to Sepsis after the drs/hospital kept turning her away due to Covid. She leaves behind a four year old daughter!!

You need to really shout to be heard amongst all those other voices who go to A&E at a drop of a hat and waste resources. Unless you are persistent and insistent, you can easily get overlooked in the system.

Arthersleep · 19/10/2020 21:57

@StopGo

I am so sorry for your loss. How extremely sad for you! Flowers

Sewrainbow · 19/10/2020 22:13

@Trying2Heal sorry if I terrified you but hope you're getting treated and feel better soon.

All healthcare professionals should be alert to potential sepsis due to the many sad cases in this thread where it has been missed and tragedy occurs. I'm a radiographer so not involved in triage and assessment and yet still have had training to spot signs.

As an aside I wouldn't trust 111 with a barge pole. Untrained people relying on a testimony from a poorly person or their relative on a phone trying to ascertain priority patients to be rung back by a professional hours later - no way!

JJsDinerWaffles · 19/10/2020 22:25

OP - looking forward to an update saying that you’ve been seen and are getting the care you need. Once you’ve waded through all the posts telling you to go to a and e after you said you were going to a and e...
