Would you let your daughter play Rugby?

My daughter goes along for training sessions with her brother and enjoys them. There are some girls there but tbh not many. No one has said anything about my daughter doing it but have lost count of the amount of "there's no way I'd let my daughter do this" or "my daughter wouldn't do it , she's a princess" comments. They haven't really bothered me but today for some reason they have. I don't know, almost as if it was being inferred I didn't care about her because I was letting her join in with such a "rough sport"

Yes, if she wanted to and it was a good club.

Camomila · 18/10/2020 20:49

Sure, if she wanted to.
(I only have DSs but I'd let them go to dance/gymnastics)

UsernameTaken76 · 18/10/2020 20:49

Yes I would if she wanted to. It’s a good team sport and there is a lot of respect between players, the officials and the parents usually. Ex female rugby ref here. I would encourage it tbh.

SWLondonTown · 18/10/2020 20:49

Any physical sport/ activity is great for little kids! Male or female!

EnjoyingTheSilence · 18/10/2020 20:50

Dd has played for a few years and loves it. The muddier she can get, the better. Great team and bunch of girls playing

SlayDuggee · 18/10/2020 20:50

Yes if she wanted to.

laudete · 18/10/2020 20:50

If you're happy for your son to play rugby then I see no issue with your daughter playing rugby. Tbh, I'd encourage both of them to play touch rugby instead as my kids are not so sporty and contact sports can be rough on anyone. But, your kids are not mine (and presumably more skilled at sports).

NightIbble · 18/10/2020 20:50

My sister played rugby locally and at uni, still friends with them decades later, the rugby girls are lovely! It can be physical and she did break her wrist but she could of done that doing gymnastics!

corlan · 18/10/2020 20:50

Is it mixed? If so, how old are they? I'm female and I used to play rugby but I would not let my daughter play rugby with boys who have gone through puberty because she could really get hurt.
It is a rough sport - but it's fun to play!

Weekends · 18/10/2020 20:51

Yes, without hesitation. I wouldn't even see an issue.

Sparklesocks · 18/10/2020 20:51

Absolutely, if that’s what she wanted to do. A lot of girls/women play rugby.

DramaAlpaca · 18/10/2020 20:51

Yes, without hesitation.

AlwaysLatte · 18/10/2020 20:51

If I had a daughter then of course, why not?

Mrsjayy · 18/10/2020 20:51

Yes I did . She played in an amateur women's team for a year or so .

AppleKatie · 18/10/2020 20:52

If you are prepared to let your son then you should let your daughter.

MangoBiscuit · 18/10/2020 20:52

Hell yes! If either of my girls wanted to play rugby I would actively encourage it.

Ylvamoon · 18/10/2020 20:52

Yes, my DD plays for an all girls/ woman's club.

formerbabe · 18/10/2020 20:53

No I wouldn't but I also don't want my ds to play it either. He does it at school and I absolutely hate it and wish they didn't.

queenqueenqueen · 18/10/2020 20:53

They are only really young, its all non contact at the moment. Ahh I dunno think its just stupid comments from other parents don't have the balls to tell them they are being ridiculous I suppose.

My dd loves rugby. She's 11 now and has been playing since she was 7. It's no more dangerous or risky for girls thank for boys.

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 18/10/2020 20:54

Yes of course!
Sexism will always be an issue.

Thesearmsofmine · 18/10/2020 20:54

Yes, two of my boys play rugby and there are quite a few girls who play too.

Sexnotgender · 18/10/2020 20:54

I would as long as it was a strictly female only team. I played rugby for years and loved it.

june2007 · 18/10/2020 20:55

My daughter has at school it,s not her thing but if she wanted then why not.

TriSkiRun99 · 18/10/2020 20:56

There’s quite a few girls playing rugby in our towns club and they play tag rugby at school in PE. Or they were pre-covid.
