You’ve Got Mail - AIBU

Hi everyone. So, I’ve been messaging a guy via email for a while and we agreed to meet a while ago. (Because it’s the 90s and we don’t know about online safety yet.) He didn’t show up and I was heartbroken.

I’ve just found out who the guy is! He’s the guy who put me out of business (the beautiful bookshop my dear dead mother owned), PLUS he found out who I was and lied to me about it (or just didn’t tell me.).

BUT because it’s New York and it’s beautiful and we have this lovely jazzy soundtracks to our conversations - plus he brought me daisies (even though he barged into my house when I was ill and asked him not to) AIBU to think he’s TOTALLY changed - he’s the Darcy to my Elizabeth and we’ll live happily ever after?

I mean, he wiped my tears with an actual handkerchief! If that isn’t the sign of a changed man I don’t know what is.

YANBU!! Hideous film.

JJsDinerWaffles · 16/10/2020 10:03

Also I should add that I am very beautiful, well read, intelligent and have an incredible apartment (surprising for my job) - but I probably can’t do any better than this F-O-X

He sounds a complete bastard. You should slap a restraining order on him. He put you and 3 people out of work.

ohidoliketobe · 16/10/2020 10:10

Red flags op, red flags

Marisishidinginmyattic · 16/10/2020 10:14

YANBU. I mean, the fact he has bucketloads of money and a chain of successful shops probably softens the blow a bit doesn't it. Yeah, it's not so romantic that he ruined your business in the process of setting up the latest shop but I'm sure he'll let you add your touch to the chain instead.

I don't understand a thing about your post OP Confused

Plus his family is toxic. His father has been married several times, as has his grandfather, and his step-mother has come on to him.

Make for an interesting xmas at least ???

ZarkingBell · 16/10/2020 10:18

You're clearly too young decoraters. Relish that fact and that you dodged dodgy romcoms.

Ohhh it's a tv show Blush

I wish I was too young, I'm in my 40's - just never been a huge watcher of telly!

seayork2020 · 16/10/2020 10:21

I think putting the messages on the screen for everyone to see has to break some massive privacy laws that means we all have to eat chocolate to get over the shock?

SuburbanCrofter · 16/10/2020 10:22

YANBU OP. I think the fact a man you barely knew came into your apartment when you asked him not to, then followed you into you bedroom and tried to talk to you whilst you were in bed is extremely creepy and stalkerish, and you should have called the police at that point.

NeonGenesis · 16/10/2020 10:24

FelicityPike · 16/10/2020 10:24

Shit remake of an amazing classic.
(Although I love both Tom Hanks and James Stewart).

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 16/10/2020 10:25

Sorry that was supposed to be a reply to @decoraters
Igotmylipstickon · 16/10/2020 10:27

If your backdrop was the dodgy side of town where thrash metal music was merged with your conversations, would you stay with him?

PrtScn · 16/10/2020 10:30

OMG, I've just laughed so hard. I was like he so didn't do that! and then realised I was thinking of Sleepless in Seattle.

shitinmyhandsandclap · 16/10/2020 10:31

Not getting the point of this?

Thanks! Didn't have a clue!

AcornAutumn · 16/10/2020 10:36

I didn’t finish watching that film, it just went on and on....

Ballstothis148 · 16/10/2020 10:37

Seriously the worst and most depressing romcom ive seen! He’s awful and a psycho and she’s so lovely!!

Londoner99 · 16/10/2020 10:37

I'm going to say YABU because Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were both brilliant. She got over it in the end Smile.

Florencex · 16/10/2020 10:38

I was never able to finish that film, it must be one of the most boring ever made.

Then you're lucky never to have seen this abomination of a film.
tyrannosaurustrip · 16/10/2020 10:39

Oh I have such a soft spot for You've Got Mail. Even though I know it should fly in the face of all my feminist ideals, but I really want to be Meg Ryan in that film.

What I find interesting is nowadays, her business would have survived, not his. She has the indie bookshop, he has the giant discount bookseller being put out of business by amazon. To be fair though, he doesn't actually put her out of business - she campaigns against his business, arranges boycotts etc. All his business does is sell things cheaper than hers, and they're not even direct competitors as hers only sells children's books. You even see at one point that he is trying to make the bookshop staff in his more expert. He doesn't run any campaigns undercutting her, he just sells things cheaper and her customers prove to be fickle.

In a weird way, I like that there's no patronising attempt to have him save her business. And also, its clear that a lot of the reason she was still running the shop was the connection to her mother, and now she can write amazing children's books.

The main thing I find weird about it is that they are both openly trying to date each other while still in serious live-in relationships with other people, which is just brushed off because its the internet. Mumsnet would totally be accusing both of conducting emotional affairs.
