Circuit break lockdown at half term?

Midlifelights · 13/10/2020 18:45

So I started a thread a couple of weeks ago about this and got accused of all sorts including being ‘one of those people that wants police on the streets who loves the drama & wrecked lives and other similar shite.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4041654-To-think-we-are-heading-for-a-full-2-week-national-half-term-lockdown

Now Kier Starmer is asking for it at the recommendation of SAGE so aibu to think we will get a 2 week national lockdown at half term?

As before, I don’t want another lockdown but it seems much more likely with everything that is going on?

We're half way through our October week here so how would a national one work?

RegularHumanBartender · 13/10/2020 18:51

What would it achieve that the first one didn't? What would be the benefit and what would be the cost to jobs and lives and businesses?

Midlifelights · 13/10/2020 18:52

I guess half term different in different schools - he’s not asking for schools to close- just everything else by the sound of it.

I just don’t know what’s best anymore? It’s what SAGE are recommending apparently- hospital cases & deaths rising

here is the story

Do you just mean a 2 week lockdown sometime in October then?

I'm in the west of Scotland, it's pretty much locked down again here anyway.

Midlifelights · 13/10/2020 18:55

Over 17,000 cases today too.

What is the answer?

Cherrycee · 13/10/2020 18:56

I agree OP, but you can expect another battering for merely asking the question.

babygroups · 13/10/2020 18:56

Ah ok you mean in England rather than a national lockdown?

Smellbellina · 13/10/2020 18:59

I don’t see the point if schools stay open tbh

Midlifelights · 13/10/2020 19:00

The FM in Wales (where my family live in South Wales and are in a local lockdown) is saying he wants a Cobra meeting to explore this in wales too & Is also saying he’ll ‘close the border’ - so it could everywhere if the devolved nations agree too

What word should OP have used instead?

Letseatgrandma · 13/10/2020 19:01

There is absolutely no point in a 2/3 week lockdown if they don’t close schools.

Midlifelights · 13/10/2020 19:13

Prof of public health from imperial college saying 1-100 infected in some areas. Schools arent the issue according to him- it’s hospitality & bars etc that are the problem

Right. That’s not what the weekly surveillance report suggests.

Midlifelights · 13/10/2020 19:19

Well, I’m inclined to listen to a public health expert who sits on part of the SAGE group.

kittensarecute · 13/10/2020 19:22

No no no!! No more lockdowns. We've all sacrificed enough!

PicsInRed · 13/10/2020 19:23

I'd like an open debate between the scientists and Sunak. I want to know what the respective arguments are. At the moment all we know is that that is disagreement, but we don't have the information - specifically about the state of the economy.

babygroups · 13/10/2020 19:24

What word should OP have used instead?

National to me means the whole of the UK. If I was talking about a lockdown in Scotland for instance then I'd say Scottish lockdown rather than national lockdown.

Shizzlestix · 13/10/2020 19:27

I think they do mean that schools would close too. The second colleague in my department of 4 is awaiting a test result. If she tests positive, I’m not sure what to do, we’ve been in the same office for weeks!

Midlifelights · 13/10/2020 19:29

Honestly, I am genuinely baffled as to why we have public health and infectious disease specialists if everyone just says no to what they say. Genuinely interested in what people think should happen If not? They are saying it’s March all over again with rising death rates and very rapidly rising cases. Otherwise we will end up like America with their bonkers covid denier approach

Circuit breaker is just a fancy new term for total lockdown. And once locked down what's the plan for on opening up? Just by calendar, or by results?

Thigh I do think a ban on inter--regional travel during half term is a good idea.

But would they be able to impose it in time?

MiracletoCome · 13/10/2020 19:34

Well, I’m going on holiday tomorrow so they can do what the hell they want when I come back on the 23rd, it’s that when half term starts.

TokyoSushi · 13/10/2020 19:35

I'd say there's about a 70% chance of this happening now.

hamstersarse · 13/10/2020 19:36

The only way a lockdown that will achieve what you think it will would work is literally total and full lockdown. Where no one goes out at all. No deliveries. No supermarkets. No healthcare. No schools. Nothing

PicsInRed · 13/10/2020 19:45

Right, so we lock down at half term, but people go abroad, and loads of COVID comes back in.

That has happened twice now.

If there are hols abroad, I'm not locking down. What's the fucking point.
